Proposal Anna Huber LI813XO Individual Library Collection Assignment The hospital is considering adding an ophthalmology service. Since the hospital library currently has very few works on ocular science, I propose we add a distinct ophthalmology section to the hospital library. Ophthalmology has an active publishing base and many of the most valuable reference works are in recent publication and include updated technology features valuable to the medical community (such as CD-ROM s and PDA software), making it an economically valuable specialty in which to expand our collection. We should begin with both general reference works, the bibles of the field, and diagnostic references that will be in constant use. The library can expand the collection, as time and the budget allows, to include more detailed works on various ophthalmologic specialties such as pediatrics, low vision, or surgery. In this vein, the books I have recommended are reference works that both practicing ophthalmologists and residents will find helpful to diagnosis, treat or refer as needed. We do not need to add general textbooks or collegiate level material since our ophthalmologists and ophthalmology residents are looking for concise, detailed reference works rather then general texts. In addition I recommend some additions to our periodicals, such as Archives of Ophthalmology, which will give users access to current studies. The new ophthalmology service will appreciate the expanded services we offer and our patients will appreciate the higher standard of care their doctors will provide.
References Albert, D., Jakobiec, F., Azar, T., Gragoudas, E., Power, S., Robinson, N. (1999). Principles and practice of ophthalmology (Six Volume Set), 2nd Edition. W.B Saunders Co. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania p. The New England Journal of Medicine writes about Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology: "In his preface to this series, one of the editors writes that many students probably are attracted to ophthalmology because of the erroneous notion that one should be able to master all available knowledge about an organ as small and anatomically well defined as the eye. This book demonstrates the folly of such a fantasy." These encyclopedic like volumes are exhaustively comprehensive and encompass 21 separate subjects including genetics, pharmacology, lasers, lenses, and psychological aspects of ophthalmology. Extensive visual aids include 6000 illustrations, diagrams, graphs, and tables. Some sources recommend supplementing Principles with an atlas. The 2nd edition is updated from the original 1994 edition to include pertinent medical advances in vision science. The six volume set is broken down into a single, mammoth text devoted to vision science basics and 5 additional volumes detailing ophthalmology practice. This work is also available in CD-ROM format which might ease the use of this relatively large reference set. Principles is an excellent, authoritative reference work which nicely supplements other recommended reference works that may be more suited for everyday use. List Price $ for books alone List price $ for books and CD ROM Kaiser, P., Friedman, N., Pineda, R. (2003) The Massachusetts eye and ear infirmary illustrated manual of ophthalmology (2 nd ed.). Philadelphia: W.B Saunders Co.
The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Illustrated Manual of Ophthalmology provides an illustrated reference for use in diagnostic treatment. As few differential diagnostic guides are illustrated the 450 pictures (300+) in color make this manual make it an excellent, multi-dimensional addition to any vision science library. Comparatively inexpensive, this paperback edition has been expanded to include drug treatment and advances in vision science. Meant to be a usable reference source, this work will be particularly useful in a small library since it will provide residents with fingertip reference, suitable for use in the exam lane, and single source overview for more experience practitioners. The text is generally organized anatomically while the pathology information is organized by disease process while within this larger organizational scheme, each entry is organized consistently with definitions, symptoms, etiology, differentials, treatment, and prognosis. Dr Robert DiMartino reviewed The Massachusetts Manual for the American Academy of Optometry and wrote, This text delivers an incredible amount of well-written and concise ocular pathology information in a small book venue. This manual is available as a stand-alone paperback version or with PDA formatting from Elsiver. Excellent diagnostic companion to Wills Eye Manual. List Price $105 for book and PDA software List Price $69 for book or software stand-alone Hofstetter, H., Griffin, J., Berman, M., Everson, R. (2000). Dictionary of visual science and related clinical terms (5 th ed.). Boston: Butterworth-Heinemann. The 5 th edition of the Dictionary of Visual Science and Related Clinical Terms remains true to the creators original, 1960 s era, goal of creating authoritative definitions of visual science terms. This edition includes expanded definitions of related clinical terms including technical, pharmacological, and cross-discipline terminology. Reviewer for the Association of schools and colleges of Optometry Dr Ellen R. Ettinger writes: The editors expanded this edition to reflect a greater emphasis in clinical eye and vision care. A special emphasis in including terms
related to ocular disease and therapeutic pharmacological agents was planned. In my opinion, the editors met their goal of expanding very successfully! Like previous editions this dictionary is a work of concise definition rather then explanation; this is not the source for comprehensive, encyclopedic examinations of terms. A true dictionary, the Dictionary of Visual Science and Related Clinical Terms includes a pronunciation guide, cross-references, photographs, and illustrations of approximately 25,000 terms while an expanded appendix includes almost 40 pages of detailed tables covering a host of subjects including abbreviations and classifications. This edition also includes a CD-ROM, allowing users to search the dictionary with Adobe software, a great convenience factor. List Price $89.95 Miller, N., Newman, N., Biousse, V., Kerrison, J., Walsh, F., Hoyt, W. (Eds.). (2004). Walsh & Hoyt's clinical neuro-ophthalmology: In three volumes. (6th ed.). Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Walsh & Hoyt's may be the most comprehensive reference on neuroophthalmology ever compiled. The 6th edition sees this encyclopedic series moving from 5 volumes to a more succinct 3 with a renewed focus on patient management. Updated subjects include genetics, new diagnostics and new treatment protocol. Volume 1 handles the sensory system, the nervous system, the motor system, the eyelid, pain, headache, and non-organic disease. Volume 2 covers tumors, the phacomatoses, and vascular disease. Volume 3 is left to report on disease; covering degenerative, metabolic, infectious, inflammatory, and demyelinating diseases. Walsh & Hoyt's is well organized with 73 authors contributing to 62 chapters which are extensively (dare to say exhaustively?) referenced. The 6th edition includes some illustrations and a comprehensive series index in each volume. In his review of Walsh & Hoyt's for the Journal of Neuro- Ophthalmology, Jonathan Trobe says "Every university library will have to own it. It probably should be on the shelf of libraries of basic and clinical neuroscience
departments and schools of optometry...[a] classic in the field. There is simply no other source for comprehensive information in neuro-ophthalmology." List Price $ Spalton, D., Hitchings, R., Hunter, P. (2004). Atlas of clinical ophthalmology (3 rd ed.). Moby, Ophthalmology is unique in that most ocular conditions result in distinct, physical symptoms that are visible to the examining physician. An atlas allows residents and pathologists alike to review (or learn) the physical manifestations of ocular diseases and conditions and is essential to any vision science reference collection. The Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology provides an illuminated look at ocular pathology in over 3, 400 illustrations including both photographs and line drawings. The line drawings are diagramed and labeled to identify the pathology shown in the photographs, an unusual feature which is particularly useful to residents. Doody calls The Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology a gorgeous pedagogic tool that is unmatched in photographic quality and clarity of illustrations... It is a "must-have" for any reference shelf. As with many other reference works, this atlas has a companion CD-ROM that allows both electronic viewing access and use of the illustrations for electronic presentations. List price $ Wills Eye Hospital, Kunimoto, D., Kanitkar, K., Makar, M., Friedberg, M. (2004). The Wills Eye Manual: Office and Emergency Room Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Disease. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Wills Eye Manual is the standard of diagnostic eye disease and a virtual requirement for vision science holdings of any size. Organized in a succinct outline form, disorders are covered in a consistent manner describing symptoms, etiology, differentials, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Wills has long shown a desire to aggressively revise their manual to reflect the very latest in vision
science. The fourth edition is no exception with many new studies, tests, diagnostics, surgical techniques, treatment protocols, and recently introduced medications. Wills has no illustrations, definitions, or encyclopedic subject knowledge as manual is not meant to explain the subject of ophthalmology but rather assist physicians in practicing it. PDA software is available and may arguably provide the best access to this resource. List Price $69.95
