9 A GROWING INTERNET ECONOMY: By 2020, EU Internet economy will represent EUR 1900 billion. According to the European Commission, the Internet economy in the EU is projected to grow 7 times faster than overall EU GDP. 33 FAIR COMPETITION IN ONLINE NEWS KEY ISSUES Blurring of lines between the public service and the commercial activities PSM using their privileged position to gain online advertising and draw attention/time from the audience At a time when newspapers are investing heavily in new online business models, the rapidly expanding online offers of public service broadcasters are distorting the digital market. The online activities of public service broadcasters too often go far beyond their public service remit. Ivar Rusdal, President of ENPA (European Newspaper Publishers Association), 2010 It is questionable whether the public service remit should cover on-line activity. In any case, RTÉ s object of establishing a website in connection with its other public service activities should be strictly limited to those activities and it should not be part of its public service remit to provide an on-line written news service.
