5 Grand Forks County Impact Grand Forks Co. combined add another 38,257 jobs in 2010 between 2,081 firms, which paid out $1.36 billion in payroll. Self Employment here accounted for another 3,648 self employed and $119 million in sales. Agriculture data for Grand Forks Co showed 973 farms with 825,552 acres. Agriculture activity accounted for $255 million in gross sales, plus another $11.6 million in government payments in 2007.

6 MN and GF s Agriculture Picture Agriculture data for the 12-county MN region shows 8,919 farms with 5 million acres. Agriculture activity accounted for $1.1 billion in gross sales, plus another $81 million in government payments in Average government payments per farm range from $3,740 in Clearwater Co. to $15,947 in Kittson in Minnesota, for a regional average of $9,192. This compared to $13,773 for Grand Forks Co, ND. Market value of products sold in ND is also a bit higher per farm ($262,687 in Grand Forks Co).

11 2011 Manufacturing Skills Gap Survey Survey of manufacturing employers show: Northwest Minnesota Region Ranked highest for: Percentage of positions left unfilled due to lack of qualified candidates (25%+ jobs unfilled = 8% of responses) Rating the current and anticipated shortage of qualified workers as serious or moderate (54% of responses current, 66% of responses for anticipated in next 3 years) Skilled production, scientists and engineers greatest regional shortages Skills shortages most impacting current the employers production demands, customer service satisfaction, and productivity targets

12 2011 Manufacturing Skills Gap Survey Increased wages and healthcare and retirement benefits packages most successful in closing skills gap. Both hiring and retention Low expectations for government in solving issues Only 18% believe public services would be very useful, lower than other regions in the state Community and technical colleges also less resourceful (6% believed them as very useful, lower than other regions in MN) More reliance on Internet services, placement agencies, newsprs 73% of responses said high performance workforce was most important in future business success Twice as high as low cost producer status, new product innovation, increased customer service, global sourcing, etc.
