1 DL Course Development Process (New Course) Preliminary Stage Design Work with Deans to Determine Course Development Needs Work with Deans to select SME and establish a Contact the Design regarding development assignment Create paper file Meet with ID team regarding development assignment Update databases on SharePoint Send initial to SME, with attached Course Development Guidelines, reference to ESW, etc. Contact SME via telephone to establish timeline for course development Work with ID to establish timeline for course development Sign development contract and return it to DL center Log in to course Contract Admin. draft new contact and mails it to SME Contract Admin. scan signed contract; upload electronic copy to database on SharePoint; place paper copy in file Inform Contract Admin. regarding new contract Inform IDS regarding Contacts D2L Admin. to have a course shell created in development area Inform Faculty Trainer that SME is developing a new course Attend training workshop D2L Admin. create course shell in dev. area (including course template) D2L Admin. send login information to SME via ; CCs ID provide assistance as Facilitate meeting between SME and Dev. Advisory via teleconference or videoconference Meet with ID and Faculty Trainer assess what training is required and make the appropriate arrangements 1

2 Planning Stage Design Work with SME to create Course Matrix Work with ID to create Course Matrix (Note: This is a working copy and can be modified later as ) Helpdesk Personnel provide support for SME as ID use Course Matrix to set up file structure. This is also used to determine what learning tools may be. Following PIRS, the overall structure of the course is laid out prior to development. Keep record of progress Update Development Log and report progress to IDS via 2

3 Production Stage Design Address any problems with production Meet with IDs for regular updates on development progress Review content to ensure it follows PIRS, the objective is addressed, etc. Prepare course content in MS-Word format (Proofread for spelling and grammar) Helpdesk Personnel provide support for SME as Report any problems with production to Chair Convert course content to online format Work with SME to provide images, graphs, audio, video, etc., as deemed appropriate for course. Contact media specialist as Send content to ID via (i.e., one unit at a time, as it is completed). Work with ID to provide images, graphs, audio, video, etc., as deemed appropriate for course. Meets with ID a minimum of one session per week via telephone as per development agreement Log development progress and provide report at monthly ID meeting Report any problems with production to IDS 3

4 Post-Production Stage Design Process payment for SME Report course development completion to Dean Do QA/QC review and provide feedback to ID Sign off course and inform ID that it has been signed off Inform IDS that production on course is completed and ready for QA/QC review Address any outstanding issues, if necessary If possible, teach course first time it is offered and suggest any necessary revisions in consultation with ID Send thank-you letter to members Inform D2L Admin. course has been signed off and requests it be moved from the development area to the Master Course List. Inform Chair that course development is completed Inform Bookstore of textbook requirements Create course backup on Shared Network Drive and CD (place CD in paper file) Create acknowledgements page in D2L (SME and Advisory ) Work with SME to fine tune course D2L Admin. move course from development area to Master Course list. Bookstore contact SME/instructor to confirm textbook requirements and place order Update databases on SharePoint Showcase course in quarterly ID meeting Identify show case items for upcoming quarterly ID meeting 4

5 Premier Offering Stage Design Provide ongoing support and make any necessary revisions to course Teach course first time it is offered and suggest any necessary revisions in consultation with ID D2L Admin. move course to current semester list and Enroll instructor 5
