1 2008 Best Practice Best In Class Recipient TD Canada Trust Receives Award for Superior Recognition Program Because of its commitment to two key aspects of excellent employee recognition programs management responsibility and program measurement - TD Canada Trust was selected by Recognition Professionals as a 2008 Best Practice Award recipient. TD Canada Trust (TDCT) is the result of a 2000 merger between Toronto Dominion Bank and Canada Trust. The $8 billion merger, involving 22,000 retail employees and 1,100 branches, was the largest of its kind in the Canadian financial services sector and created the second largest Canadian bank by assets. Among the challenges posed for the institution s recognition professionals, was combining two entities with very distinct cultures. In addition, the new TDCT executive team was committed to making the new bank Canada s customer service leader. To address all of this, TDCT designed and implemented a recognition program in 2004 that would support the corporate objectives directly. The proof that it s working are record levels of employee satisfaction, industry-leading customer service rankings, and top-tier financial performance. One of the ways management supports the recognition team is by encouraging members to elevate their level of expertise through the RPI Certified Recognition Professional program. Recognition programs that are administered consistently and evenly are instrumental in bringing employees together under a variety of circumstances, said Christi Gibson, RPI s executive director. The merger at TD Canada Trust is a prime example. Aside from the traditional benefits of motivating and engaging employees, the program at TDCT served as a rallying point postmerger. In addition, TDCT s decision to seek certification for their recognition team was especially wise since the company has so much at stake in the program s success.
