Make-Up Policy: Make ups are taken on D2L and have a two hour time limit. They are essay questions geared to a two hour test. You have five days from the test to take them. If you have special circumstances, please discuss them with me BEFORE the test day. The FINAL CANNOT BE MADE UP. 2. Late Policy: You may submit your Midterm and/or Interview late. If they are late, submit them to the DropBox here on D2L. I will assess a -10 points a day penalty. B. Extra Credit: This course offers some extra credit opportunities. If you are not there on the day they are handed out, I will not allow an extension. I do not allow make ups, since this is just extra credit. Submit them to me by the due date before class or you will receive no extra credit.
1. Desire 2 Learn: This course uses Desire 2 Learn (D2L). You are responsible for the syllabus and everything on D2L. 2. To make sure you know how to use D2L and turnitin.com, I have an extra credit assignment. Extra Credit #1: You will find this on D2L under the Content tab. Due January 18. You must follow the directions exactly or you will not get extra credit. C. The "paper": You are a reporter for The Daily Planet. With the help of billionaire inventor Tony Stark, you get a chance to go back in time and interview one historic figure. Sadly, the only people you can visit are on the list below. You can make it graphic novel/manga style with drawings and bubbles, although the biography needs to be written out like an essay. Or you can follow my example. Original Drawings, pasted pictures, or scrapbook tidbits like ribbon, a key, or whatever are acceptable. JUST BE SURE IT IS IN GOOD TASTE AND NOT ILLEGAL ON CAMPUS. So, no wine bottles, although you can soak off a wine label and fix it to a page. In your interview, you need to show you know about your subject, so begin with a one paragraph biography. You will tell him/her all about themselves to gain trust and show respect. Then, ask them about their life, accomplishments, era, and relationships. The answers must be based on fact. For example, if you choose Henry VIII, you might wish to ask him how his reign helped bring about a time of turmoil for England or why he had so many wives. Of course, there are more questions you need to ask him. Your "paper"/comic/manga will be a minimum of 600 words. You must use two books besides your text (they can be ebooks) and one internet site. The internet site must have in its address.gov or.edu. No other address is acceptable. Your paper will have a formal bibliography. 1. Choose a person from this list: Joan of Arc Michelangelo Agnes Sorel of France Louis IX Pericles Mary Queen of Scots Alexander the Great Vasco de Gama Emperor Constantine Julius Caesar Machiavelli Hernando Cortes Queen Hatshepsut Aristotle Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt Philip IV of Spain King Tutankhamen Savonarola Elizabeth I of England King Darius II of Persia William the Conqueror
Henry VIII of England ArtemisiaGentileschi MartinLuther Nero Antipater of Greece Hildegard of Bignan 2. Format: Here is how the interview looks. I am using someone NOT on the list Jean-Baptiste Colbert Interview By: A.V. Petrovich Jean-Baptiste Colbert ( ) became France s most powerful minister in the Age of Louis XIV. At one time, he was the Minister of Finance, Forests, Overseas Affairs, Land and Agriculture, and Minister of Fishing. Despite the power he wielded, Colbert was born a peasant. His parents were in the cloth industry and his mother sewed drapes. However, he did have an uncle who was a banker. Through his uncle, Colbert managed to get a position in the household of Cardinal Jules Mazarin. The young Louis XIV met him and liked what he saw. Despite protests, he named this peasant Minister of Finance. Colbert would fulfill all of his obligations with honesty, diligence, and vigor. He typified the best of official in Baroque France because he was honest yet a major social climber and shameless flatterer. Me: Hello, Monsieur Colbert! How do you like your write up? I am going to lead my article with it. Colbert: Well, it is not very flattering. You forgot to mention that I managed to buy the title of Marquis for one of my 10 sons and my 8 daughter married nobles. Also, did you forget my wife was a member of the Academie Francaise? She was an astronomer. Me: Oh, sorry. I forgot all of that. Can you tell our readers an interesting tidbit about yourself? Colbert: Humm most people call me The Northwind or Mr. Boring. Interesting, well, I sleep 3 hours a night. Me: And yet you and Mrs. Colbert have 18 children? Colbert: (long pause) Yup. And so on.
2. submit to Turnitin.com March 29. If you do a graphic novel, submit the biography. 3. Writing Hints: Avoid offensive language Never plagiarize! When in doubt, use a citation. These would look like this: (Austen, 21). Contact me if you need further help. D. Class Discussion and Participation: you will participate in class by asking pertinent questions, asking questions about course material, and joining into group discussions or exercises. IX. Student Responsibilities: Students are expected to participate fully in this course. The following criteria are intended to assist you to be successful in this course: A. Understand the syllabus requirements B. Use appropriate time management skills C. communicate with your professor D. complete coursework on time, and E. utilize online components (such as Turnitin.com) as required. X. Projects, Assignments, Assessments, etc. A. Group Projects: This course uses group discussions, projects and interactive class games to help get a feel for life and death in history. The average of your grade for each of these exercises is 1/5th the total course grade 1. Group Discussions: Before the date of the Discussion, go to Content. Under Content, look down the left side bar for Discussion Questions. They are numbered 1-3. For the appropriate discussion, print up the questions. Put your name on them. Answer the questions. Bring the sheet to class. At the end of the discussion, hand them in to me. No discussion questions mean -20 points. Discussions cannot be made up.
2. Interactive Activities: There are 3 interactive activities for the course. Each is unique and designed to bring history to life. a. Akhenaton versus Egypt Debate. In this great debate, the class divides into two group. One group, headed by Pharaoh Akhenaton, tries to prove why Egyptians need just one God. The other group, led by High Priest Immon, argue why the multiple gods religion is worth keeping. Go wild with costumes, posters, FAKE weapons (VERY FAKE). a. Romans versus Barbarians: Knowledge Game. In this activity, the class divides into Romans and Barbarians. Each side tries to answer the questions. They are based on the reading and lecture. The first side to score 15 points wins! See Content: Romans versus Barbarians Game for more details b. Renaissance Banquet. In this activity, we are going to be a Renaissance party. Here we will sample Renaissance music and food, too. We will role play to get a better idea of social stratification. See Content, Renaissance Life for more information B. Grade Distribution Midterm: worth 1/5th the course grade Final: worth 1/5th the course grade Interview: worth 1/5th the course grade Personal Responsibility: worth 1/5th the grade. This means attending class or contacting me ahead of time when you are going to miss class, class conduct, timeliness, getting work in on time, and being prepared for class. Each student starts with 100. The grade goes down from there if students skip, act up, forget to bring or submit work, are not ready for class, or do not interact in a polite and mature fashion. I judge how many points to deduct, between 1-5 depending on the circumstances. Interactive Events: averaged, worth 1/5th the course grade XI. Calendar of Readings and Assignments. Check these off as you accomplish them! Week 1: Early Ancient Cultures- The Weird and the Wonderful Chapter One: The Ancient Near East: The First Civilizations
