They can be used for making cups of tea or coffee and even soups and hot snacks. A special condenser traps steam and returns droplets to the tank, minimising waste and saving energy. The water temperature is set at approximately 95 C (dependent on unit volume) and automatically maintained by the unit. Pulling the front lever forward dispenses hot water. Important Notes This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children and the infirm) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. The heater level detection system uses two protective resistors to earth, this results in an insulation resistance (IR) of 0.5M Ω, and as a consequence the equipment would appear to fail a routine Portable Appliance Test (PAT). This is only relevant if the unit is fitted with a standard 13A plug, however, this product is not to be classed as a portable appliance, and as detailed on page 3, it is instructed that the unit is to be wired to a means for disconnecting the fixed wiring in all poles in accordance with the wiring rules (eg. 13A fused double pole isolating switch). In the unlikely event that the unit is fitted incorrectly, the recommendation is if test is carried out with water in the tank the IR reading will be 0.5M Ω. If this becomes an issue to the PAT engineer, switch off the power and drain the tank through the tap prior to connection test. PAT test is not a case of pass/fail. If PAT records negative then this is not a failure. It highlights the possibility of a failure and then the unit should undergo further investigation. With regards to BS EN Clause 16 earth leakage (not IR) can be 0.7A per kw = 1.8mA. Test at 254V (6% above nominal) / 1.8Ma = 141k Ω so reading of 0.5M Ω is acceptable. 3 Trouble Shooting Service Hints If the unit is not working satisfactorily, make the following checks before calling out the contractor. Any one of these adjustments could restore the performance. Carry out descaling procedure. Installation Instructions Important Notes All installations must be undertaken by a competent installer. If in any doubt, advice and assistance should be sought from a qualified plumber and/or electrician. Installation and wiring must conform to the current BS.7671 (IEE Wiring Regulations) and the Water Fittings Regulations. Local regulations may apply in other countries. The steam vent connection MUST BE MADE, as required in these instructions. A means for disconnection in all poles must be incorporated in the fixed wiring in accordance with the wiring rules. Check that the mains supply matches the electrical rating on the product. The rating plate is located on the bottom edge of the unit. THIS APPLIANCE, AND ALL METAL PIPEWORK CONNECTED TO IT, MUST BE EARTHED. This appliance must be connected to a TN-System electrical power supply. This has a common earth-point. It is not suitable for an IT-System electrical power supply as this has an isolated earth-point. Please note: this is applicable for some European installations. Frost Protection: This appliance should be located where the ambient air temperature is between 5 C and 50 C. If the temperature may fall below 5 C when the appliance is not in use, do not turn off the appliance electrically. This safeguard does NOT offer protection to the connecting pipe work and fittings. The unit should not be operated if freezing is suspected. Allow the unit to thaw completely. This unit must not be cleaned by, or installed in an area cleaned by, a water jet. What the installer will need A means for disconnecting the fixed wiring in all poles in accordance with the wiring rules (eg. 13A fused double pole isolating switch). Suitable length of 1.0mm² 3-Core multi-strand PVC insulated mains cable that complies with BS Suitable lengths of Ø15mm copper pipe. 10 3

4 Where to locate the unit We recommend that the unit is installed on a suitable wall, at shoulder height and over a sink. Adjacent to the means for disconnecting the fixed wiring in all poles in accordance with the wiring rules (ie: 13A fused double pole isolating switch). Available mains cold water supply and drainage facility. DO NOT install the unit within reach of a person using a bath or shower. This unit must not be installed in an area cleaned by a water jet. DO NOT obstruct the ventilation channels on the top of the cover plate. Installing the water supply and steam vent pipes The unit must be connected to cold, mains fed, drinking water only. Pressure range between 0.2 MPa (2.0 bar / 29psi) and 1.0 MPa (10.0 bar / 140 psi). DO NOT connect to a storage tank Isolate the water supply Lay in the Ø15mm water supply pipe to the location of the inlet connection. Lay in the Ø15mm drainage pipe to the location of the steam vent connection. The steam vent connection must be taken directly to the sink below, if there is one, or via a tundish to a suitable drain. If a sink is used it must be able to withstand boiling water and have an overflow connection. Installing the mains supply If a mains supply is not already available. Install a means for disconnecting the fixed wiring in all poles (eg. 13A fused double pole isolating switch) adjacent to where the unit will be fixed. Removing the front cover Ensure unit is disconnected from mains electricity supply. Ensure unit is emptied of water through opening of tap and allow unit to cool. Unscrew the front tap. Remove the screws from the bottom and top edge of the unit. Disconnect the neon light, carefully unclipping it from the front cover. Maintenance / Descaling Process To Drain the unit Turn off the water and electricity power supplies. Turn on the tap on the front of the unit to drain the tank. Unscrew and remove the tap and remove 4 fixing screws on outer cover. Shield the electronic controller from possible water damage. Carefully remove the drain plug from the bottom of the tank and drain. WARNING: Beware of splashing water as it may be near boiling point. Descaling If scale comes out with the hot water then the unit may need to be descaled. As with all water heaters scale will build inside the tank. How quickly this build up occurs will depend on the hardness of the water and the frequency of use. Please follow the procedure below:- A suitably qualified person should carry out the descaling. Ensure the mains electricity supply is isolated. Unscrew and remove tap. Remove 4 fixing screws on outer cover. Remove draining plug on bottom of water tank. After water has drained out replace plug. Mix 2 teaspoons (approximately 10ml) food grade citric acid into a cup of water. Feed citric acid through tap hole (either by funnel or placing tap half way on the thread, turning upside down with the tap lever permanently open). Tighten tap, leaving outside cover off. Turn power on, unit will cycle and fill. Allow unit to boil for 10 minutes then drain. Turn power off. Drain unit and remove tap. Replace outside cover. Replace tap, turn power on. Wait until unit has filled with water drain once again from tap, allow unit to refill. Unit is ready for use. Cleaning: Before cleaning, switch off the electricity at the isolating switch. It is recommended that the unit surfaces are cleaned with a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive or solvent cleaning fluids. 4 9

5 Operating Instructions Initial Operating Instructions Make sure the water is turned on prior to mains electricity supply. Check all connections for water leaks. Turn on the power and wait approximately 20 minutes before using. Priming the unit When the power is turned on for the first time the unit will automatically prime itself, covering the heating element. The heating element will then switch ON and boil that amount of water (this will take minutes) starting the automatic Heat and Refill process until the tank is full. The unit then goes into maintenance mode, keeping the water at the required temperature. The unit should be switched off at the mains if the water is not required for a long period of time (eg: at weekends, holidays etc). Please note The unit can take several minutes to reach the required temperature, depending on usage and tank capacity. When first installed, it is recommended that the initial tank of boiling water is fully drawn off and discarded. Allow the tank to re-fill before using the unit. Safety Features The boiling water unit is fitted with a MANUAL RESET SAFETY DEVICE, which operates in a BOIL DRY situation, and a MANUAL RESET THERMOSTAT, for detecting excessive steam in the event of electronic controller failure or water solenoid valve failure. Unless you are a qualified engineer DO NOT ATTEMPT to repair this unit yourself. In the event of malfunction please contact our Technical Service Helpline on WARNING SCALDING HOT WATER will be dispensed from the unit. Never wash your hands directly from the unit. Some plastic cups can distort if they are filled with boiling water, so causing a danger of scalding. Do not use if heater is suspected of being frozen. Allow to thaw completely before use. 8 5

6 Schematic Diagram Fixing the unit to the wall Suitable screws and washers must be used through the designated keyholes on the backplate of the unit ensuring the unit securely fastened to the wall. Ensure the fixing screws are horizontal and the unit, when installed, is level. Connecting the water supply and vent pipes When the unit is fixed to the wall, make the final water supply and steam vent connections and secure the pipework. Switch the water supply back on. Connecting the mains cable Ensure the mains supply is isolated. Connect the mains cable from the unit to the means for disconnection (eg. 13A fused double pole isolating switch). Ensure the cable clamps are firmly secured and the cable ends are tightened into the terminal block. Note: The supply cable must be a minimum of 1.0mm² 3-Core multi-strand PVC insulated mains cable. The terminal block will not accept cable diameters above 1.5mm². Check that the mains supply matches the electrical rating on the product. The rating plate is located on the bottom edge of the unit. IMPORTANT: Connect the supply cable, complying with BS.6500, to this appliance in accordance with the following code: GREEN AND YELLOW (EARTH) connect to the terminal marked. BLUE (NEUTRAL) connect to terminal marked N. BROWN (LIVE) connect to terminal marked L. WARNING: THIS APPLIANCE, AND ALL METAL PIPEWORK CONNECTED TO IT, MUST BE EARTHED. Replacing the front cover Support the front cover and re-attach the neon light carefully clipping to the unit. Replace the front cover and secure using the top and bottom screws. Apply Teflon tape to tap thread and screw-in. Reconnect the mains water supply. Check for any leaks and make good prior to turning mains electricity supply on. 6 7
