1 2014 Course Calendar DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan s (RIM) Education and Research Academy offers a variety of continuing education courses. As a teaching hospital and leader in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, we are dedicated to serving the patients in our community by advancing the education of our staff and other professionals in our industry.

Registration closes ten days prior to the start date of the course. Cancellation Policy Tuition will be refunded less a $30 processing fee if written notification is sent to Julie Kiefer Eaman at jeaman@dmc.org 14 days prior to the course. RIM employees will be refunded less a $5 processing fee if written notification is sent to jeaman@dmc.org 14 days prior to the course. Otherwise, no refund will be given. 3 COURSE RESERVED FOR RIM EMPLOYEES ONLY PNF Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Introductory Course Saturday, February 8, 2014 This introductory course is designed to teach the basic principles, philosophy, and techniques of PNF and their applications to the assessment and treatment of the scapula/pelvis/trunk. This is a hands-on course. 4 Gait, Foot and Ankle Evaluation and Treatment Saturday February 22 and Sunday February 23, 2014 This lab based course will include a review of foot and ankle anatomy and biomechanics, intrinsic compensations of the foot, gait analysis and exercise intervention. Athletic shoe wear selection and trends, taping and orthotic fabrication. A casting lab will be held at the end of day 2. 5 Hip Joint Evaluation and Treatment: A Sports Medicine Approach Saturday March 8 and Sunday March 9, 2014 Evaluation and treatment of the hip with a sports medicine approach. Treatment interventions will include manual therapy, Shirley Sahrmann muscle balancing, corrective exercises and taping techniques for gluteal dysfunction, hip flexor syndrome, femoral acetabular impingement, athletic pubalgia, trochanteric syndrome, and more. This is a lab based course. 6 Introduction to Positioning for Functional Ability and Wheelchair Seating Saturday March 15, 2014 The assessment of posture and positioning can directly affect functional ability. A proper mat evaluation can influence proper body mechanics for wheelchair propulsion and the ability to perform functional tasks and activities of daily living. During this course, the participant will learn mat evaluation, the required elements for documentation, and options for equipment including power wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, cushions, and backs. 7 Introduction to the Examination and Intervention for the Muscles and Soft Tissue of Cervical Thoracic and Lumbar Spine Saturday March 22, 2014 The materials for this introductory course will be provided by the author and master instructor John Krauss PhD, PT, OCS, FAAOMPT. The content will be a sample of the S1-OMPT Examination and Intervention for the Muscles of the Trunk, Neck and Head which is part of the Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy curriculum at Oakland University. OMT concepts will include: symptom localization (muscle and tendon bowstringing, muscle length testing, provocation/alleviation), muscle play, manual muscle stretching, functional massage and self-treatment. This course will be useful for practitioners of all levels. Graduates of the Orthopedic Manual Therapy program will benefit from this course as additional refinements and techniques have been introduced to the curriculum. 8 Exercise as an Adjunct to Manual Therapy by Mark Bookhout, PT Saturday April 5 and Sunday April 6, 2014 This course explores the interrelationship of anatomy, biomechanics and neurophysiology for the neuromusculoskeletal system. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation of neuromotor regulation with identification of faulty movement patterns in both the upper and lower quarters. The use of specific home exercises to complement manual therapy for acute and chronic musculoskeletal dysfunction are emphasized. Joint mobilization, manual stretching, self stretching exercises and neuromotor retraining exercises are demonstrated and practiced by the participants. 9 Aquatic Training Workshop for Physical Neuro Rehabilitation Saturday May 10, 2014 This introductory level course is designed for therapists who conduct aquatic therapy with adult clients who are neurologically impaired due to spinal cord and/or traumatic brain injuries. Course participants learn and practice specific techniques to be used in the pool with clients for tone/spasticity reduction, improving range of motion, improving core stability and adapting swim strokes. Includes hands-on practice in the pool after learning principles on land. Individual examples and case studies are discussed and processed in the group. * Participants need to bring a swim suit. 10 The P.L.A.Y. Project Saturday May 10, 2014 This workshop is ideal for parents and professionals who want to learn the fundamentals of autism and play-based intervention. This presentation includes a summary of the latest autism research, including possible etiologies, prevalence, and treatment options. This workshop highlights The P.L.A.Y. Project Model as well as the DIR (Developmental, Individualized, Relationship-based) framework of Dr. Stanley Greenspan also known as Floortime. Attendees will learn about Dr. Richard Solomon s P.L.A.Y. Project Skill Sequence including PLAY strategies, methods, and techniques for engaging young children with autism. 11 HOSTING COURSE FROM EDUCATION RESOURCES Treating the Cardiac Patient: Reaching Full Potential Safely Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18, 2014 Patients in every setting are sicker than ever before. This requires therapists in all settings to be aware of acute comorbidities, precautions and contraindications. They need to make decisions to preserve the patient s safety and help them reach their full potential. This course delivers clinically relevant and immediately applicable knowledge to inform such decisions for practitioners from acute care, rehab, outpatient or home care. Through lecture, case discussion and small group labs, participants will review cardiovascular anatomy and physiology with a clinical background. Focus will be on medical and surgical issues that impact examination, evaluation and interventions, as well as the prognosis and outcomes. Through case analysis and clinical problem-solving, participants will learn to decide which impairments are significant and how to alter interventions to take the dysfunction into consideration. Clinical monitoring and parameters for safe exercise given a cardiac impairment will be explored. 13 Understanding Lymphedema and the Comprehensive Lymphedema Therapy Approach Saturday September 6, 2014 Rehabilitation of patients who have primary or secondary lymphedema, both children and adults, can present many challenges. 17 Functional Core Saturday October 11 and Sunday October 12, 2014 This lab based course offers a systematic approach to assessing and treating the core mobility and stability. Evaluation and treatment techniques based on Shirley Sahrmann, Gray Cook, Gary Gray, and Stuart McGill will be presented. Progressive strategies to core dysfunction, including transverse abdominis activation, basic stabilization exercises, global core work, and functional training from the ground up will be demonstrated and practiced. 18 Adapted Sports Friday October 17, 2014 This course will introduce clinicians to a variety of adaptive sports including hand cycling, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis. Coaches and instructors will describe the sports and methods to encourage participation by both beginner and elite athletes. 20 Orthopedic Kinesiotaping Saturday November 1, 2014 Learn the fundamental concepts of kinesiotaping and the unique properties of Kinesio Tex Tape. Lab sessions will provide time to practice applying tape to relax overuse syndromes, stimulate weak muscles and decrease pain and swelling. The Six Corrective Techniques (Mechanical, Functional Space, Fascia, Ligament/Tendon and Lymphatic) and their application to a variety of UE, LE and Spine conditions will be presented. 22 Massage and Rehabilitation Saturday December 6, 2014 Soft tissue techniques can aide in the reduction of pain, edema, muscle hypertension, fascial restrictions, and increase ROM, circulation, mobility, and flexibility. Basic soft tissue assessment will be discussed through the class. Direct skin contact as well as non skin contact techniques will be demonstrated. This class will be 90% hands on and will address techniques for various areas of the body including gluteals and legs, cervical and shoulders, paraspinals and pects, feet and scalp. Participants with be practicing on each other. Please wear light weight clothes and bring a pair of shorts. Be prepared to undress from the waist up to practice certain techniques. 23 Gross Human Anatomy of the Upper and Lower Quandrants Saturday January 31 and Sunday February 1, 2015 Registration for this course closes October 1, 2014 The goal of this course it to provide rehabilitation clinicians with a solid anatomical understanding of the upper and lower quadrant musculoskeletal features with a emphasis on learning from cadavers via prosections and participant dissection. Traditional lecture presentations with course packets will be provided for all attendees. Interactive lecture and lab activities will engage students to deepen their understanding of the function and form of anatomy. A Certificate of Completion and a DVD of anatomical videos and other related resources will be provided at the end of the program. On Saturday January 31 the focus will be Anatomy of the Pectoral Region, Back, Shoulder, Neck and Arm. The focus on Sunday February 1 will be the Gluteal, Lateral rotators; Hip, Thigh and Lower Limb. This is an active participation, interactive gross anatomy cadaver lab. All equipment, cadavers, prosections, and lab supplies will be provided. Registrants can attend one or two days.
