1 Office of the Provost Academic Change to an Existing Degree Program Form Proposed Academic Change to an Existing Degree: Academic Components Title of Degree: Master of Arts in Latin American Studies 1. Please provide the name, title, address, and phone number of the primary contact person for this academic program: Adela Pineda, Director, Center for Latin American Studies; Associate Professor, Department of Romance Studies Please describe and provide a rationale for the proposed change to the existing degree: We propose revising the requirements of the M.A. in Latin American Studies so that the degree can be completed in one academic year and no longer requires study abroad in Latin America. We propose: Reducing the required credits from 48 to 32 in line with most Boston University M.A. programs. Adding a new required 4-credit core interdisciplinary course (GRS IR 713) (replacing a 2-credit introductory course, IR 766) so that all students in the program share a common foundation. Broadening the requirement for a research methods course to allow students to take a methods course in their discipline of particular interest. Removing the one-semester (12-credit) Study Aboard requirement. Leaving the language requirement and masters paper requirement unchanged. These changes will: Bring the program in line with most other M.A. programs at Boston University. Bring the program in line with comparable programs at some peer institutions with which we compete, thus enhancing its ability to attract students. 1
2 3. Please describe how the proposed change(s) advances the Strategic Plans of the department, of the school/college, and of the University: The MA in Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary program that approaches the study of Latin America within a global perspective. Students in the program are encouraged to cross disciplinary boundaries in order to identify and tackle the major challenges of our times through the specific study of this region. In this sense, it closely responds to the mission of the Pardee School of Global Studies. Furthermore, as the only graduate degree currently offered by the Pardee School Division of Regional and Thematic Studies, it plays an important role in the future development of other graduate programs. Lastly, the program reinforces the Pardee School Division of International Relations. These proposed changes are also fully consistent with goals 4, and 5 of the Strategic Plan of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences: 4 We will offer leading doctoral, postdoctoral, and masters programs within and across traditional disciplinary boundaries. 5 We will promote pioneering research and scholarship within and across traditional disciplinary boundaries. 4. Please list the program requirements for the current and revised programs: (expand the table as needed and denote new courses in bold print) Current program (Total 48 credits) GRS IR 766 Contemporary Issues in Latin America (2 credits) GRS IR 702: Research Methods for International Relations Practitioners (4 credits) Four 4-credit courses in one of 5 issue areas. Issue areas are: Globalization & Development; Politics and Civil Society; US Policy & Inter- American Relations; History and Archaeology; Literature, Art & Culture. Revised program (Total 32 credits) GRS IR 713 Latin America: Past and Present (4 credits) A 4-credit graduate research methods course approved by the student s advisor Six additional 4-credit courses related to Latin America approved by the program director, including at least one course in literature, culture or art history and at least one course in history and the social sciences. Two 4-credit courses in a second issue area One 4-credit course in a third issue area A 2-credit directed study leading to the production of a Master s Paper Demonstrate a high level of competence in either Spanish or Portuguese. A Master s Paper Same 2
3 5. Is this change a result of program learning outcomes assessment and/or academic program review? If yes, please describe: This proposal is not the result of a formal academic program review. The MA in Latin American Studies program is relatively new; it admitted its first students in fall This proposal is a result of our experience with the program during this time. 6. Please list learning outcomes for the revised program: Students graduating with an MA in Latin American Studies are expected to: 1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of Latin American nations and their peoples: their history, politics, economics, culture, and social involvements; and do so within an inter- American and global perspective. 2. Demonstrate advanced level proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and oral comprehension of Spanish and/or Portuguese. 3. Demonstrate understanding of the shared traditions that unite Latin America, as well as the remarkable diversity that distinguishes significant differences. 7. How does the change place your program in the context of programs at peer institutions? As currently structured the MA in Latin American Studies requires two years to complete. Similar degrees at those institutions with which we complete for students, particularly NYU and Stanford, can be completed in 1 year. Not surprisingly we lose students as a result. The table compares requirements for this degree at 10 institutions. The table shows that our proposed new requirements are consistent with the requirements of many other regional studies programs as well as with most other MA programs at Boston University. 3

5 8. How does the change affect other academic units and existing programs at the University? Historically enrollment in this program has been small, and we anticipate enrollments remaining modest in the future. Thus these changes will have only minor effects on enrollments in each of graduate courses on Latin American topics currently offered within the humanities and social science departments. 9. How will you notify current students of the proposed changes and implement the requirements? How will you assure that students are able to complete their programs under the requirements that were in place at the time of their matriculation? Since there are no courses that are taken only by students in this program, all the courses required to complete this degree under the current requirements will be offered, allowing students currently in the program to complete. 10. Please document any implications that the change has on professional accreditation or licensure at the program or school/college level: Not applicable 11. If the change includes a new course or courses, please indicate who will teach the course and how the rest of that faculty member s courseload will be affected (redistributed, absorbed, etc.): The proposed new course GRS IR 713 will initially be taught by Professor Scott Palmer in place of the 2-credit course GRS IR 766 he is currently teaching. Since Professor Palmer is emeritus, this will require a small increase in his remuneration. 12. Please list the resources needed including IT, new faculty, new staff, reassignment of faculty from existing courses to new ones (especially if the existing course(s) is not being removed from the bulletin), technology enhanced classrooms, office space, and other facilities: No additional resources are needed 13. Please describe the budgetary impact that the proposed change will have: The only budgetary impact is a small increase in Professor Palmer s remuneration for teaching GRS IR 713 in place of GRS IR 766. This will be absorbed into the Pardee School budget. 13. Please provide the bulletin copy related to the proposed academic change, listing ALL program requirements as you wish them to appear in the Bulletin: 5
