5 PREFACE Federal Contaminated Site Risk Assessment in : Part II: Toxiologial Referene Values (TRVs) was prepared in support of the Federal Contaminated Sites Aelerated Ation Plan (FCSAAP), a program designed to ensure improved and ontinuing federal environmental stewardship as it relates to ontaminated sites loated on federally owned or operated properties. This doument is a ompanion to Federal Contaminated Site Risk Assessment in : Part I: Guidane on Human Preliminary Quantitative Risk Assessment (PQRA) and was prepared by the Environmental Assessment Servies Division, Safe Environments Programme,. As the pratie of risk assessment advanes, and as the FCSAAP proeeds, new and updated information on toxiologial referene values and other aspets of risk assessment will be published. As a result, it is antiipated that revisions to this doument will be neessary from time to time to reflet this new information. should be onsulted at the address below to onfirm that the version of the doument in your possession is the most reent edition and that the most reent TRVs are being used. Questions, omments, ritiisms, suggested additions or revisions to this doument should be direted to: Contaminated Sites Program Environmental Assessment Servies Safe Environments Programme 2720 Riverside Drive Sir Charles Tupper Building, 4 th Floor, PL 6604M Ottawa, ON K1A 0K9 Fax: (613) See also: i

11 NOTES a From Canadian Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality, Supporting Doumentation (, 2002), unless otherwise indiated. b For non-arinogens, TDI and TC values taken diretly from (1996); for arinogens, oral slope fator derived as: SF oral = 0.05/TD 05 ; TD 05 from (1996). unit risk derived as: UR Inh = 0.05/TC 05 ; inhalation slope fator derived as: SF Inh = 0.05/(TC 05 x 16 m 3 /day/70.7 kg); TC 05 from (1996); inhalation rate from Allan and Rihardson (1998) and Rihardson (1997); adult body weight from Rihardson (1997). d From CCME Soil Quality Guidelines and supporting doumentation on health-based guidelines prepared by. e WHO/FAO Joint Meeting on Pestiide Residues (JMPR) (the Food Diretorate,, generally endorses and applies the TDIs for pestiide residues derived by the JMPR). f Grant, D.L. (1983) (this TDI is still applied by for the assessment of PCB exposure from foods and other soures). g Offiially, the TDI for PCDD/PCDF is 10 pg/kg-d (, 1996); however, the WHO/FAO Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants (JECFA) reently proposed a revised TDI of 2 pg/kg-d. The Food Diretorate,, generally endorses and applies the TDIs for food ontaminants derived by the JECFA, and it is antiipated that this revised TDI will be implemented. Therefore, it is reommended that preliminary quantitative risk assessments (PQRAs) for PCDDs/PCDFs in employ this more onservative TDI. h Although the TRV from the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines Supporting Doumentation is presented, it is reommended that the omparable TRV from the more reent assessment (, 1996) be employed for risk haraterization.
