1 OBJECTIVE Most of the college campuses have got a Wireless Network and Internet Connection 1. Any KdG student can go online on campus with his own laptop. This manual is primarily meant for new students, but can be utilised by any student that needs to reconnect to the network. This manual describes what you have got to do if Windows XP is the current Operating System on your laptop. If this is not the case, you will have to consult a different manual. (http://www.kdg.be/praktisch/ict/draadloos-internet): Windows Vista Windows 7 MAC OS X Linux This manual has been written in order to install your Wireless Network through Windows and not through Configuration Tools that might have been delivered with the Wireless Network Card on your laptop. 2 WORKING WIRELESS AT KDG 2.1 The Wireless Networks for students There are two Wireless Networks available for students. KDG_Open is the network for: Guests. Students that want to use the Wireless Network for the first time and therefore need to use KDG_Open as an intermediate stage. Students that are having trouble connection to KDG_Student and therefore temporarily have to rely on KDG_Open. In normal circumstances you won t connect to KDG_Open since there is no direct access to your Home Drive, the Shares or the college printers. Mind you! The data that you send through KDG_Open are NOT automatically coded and are possibly legible to others. So never send pass words, credit card data or other sensitive information through this network. KDG_Student is the common student network. It is a secured network. Your network traffic will be coded through this specific network. You do however need a once only configuration.(more further on) 2.2 Preceding checks/actions Mostly, everything is fine but it is always best to check. 1 ICT jargon is put in bold, you will have to read the rest of the text with the same subject related meaning. 4 1. On most laptops there is a switch (touch button, slide button, ) to turn the connection on or off. Turn 2 it on. 2. Check if your Wireless Network Connection is turned on in Window. Use Default Settings. If the Wireless Network Connection in Windows is not turned on, proceed as follows: Go to Control Panel 3 > Network Connections within Windows menu start. If the Wireless Network Connection is turned off, the icon of the two monitors will be grey. To turn on: o Click right on Wireless Network Connection. o Choose Enable. 2.3 Precautions and security Regularly install the newest software-updates and make sure to provide a recent driver for the Wireless Network Card on your laptop. Work with a recently updated Virus Scanner. Turn on your Windows Firewall. (Some Virus Scanners (Norton, McAfee) install a Firewall that prevents you from immediately accessing the internet. Consult the documentation of that Virus Scanner to set it up correctly. Choose a safe KdG Password and don t forget to change it regularly. (See the manual Student Account Installation The easiest way to get a wireless connection is through the Automatic Configuration Script. You can download it from If it is on your laptop and you open it, the installation will happen automatically. If this on the other hand doesn t work you will have to do the installation manually. The standard operating procedure consists of three steps that will be elaborated in the next chapters. Log in on KDG_Open in order to download the KdG-certificate. This is also possible through the Wired Network or outside KdG. Install the KdG-certificate. Log in on KDG_Student. 2 The succeeding actions have been underlined for visual emphasise. 3 Terminology in italics have been copied directly out of an application and have to appear identically on your screen. 5 3 WORKING WIRELESS WITH KDG_OPEN 3.1 Connect to the Wireless Network KDG_Open Click the Network Pictogram bottom right on the Taskbar ( ). Choose the network KDG_Open and press connect. (You will possibly get the warning KDG_Open is an unsecured network and data sent through this network might be visible by other people. Confirm this warning by pressing Connect Anyway.) You are now connected to KDG_Open. You can close this frame by clicking on the X top right. 3.2 Log in to KDG_Open Start your browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox ) Surf to a random website on the internet. (You ll possibly get a security warning about a problem concerning the certificate. You may ignore this warning. With Internet Explorer 8 you can click on Continue to this website.) You will automatically go to the portal of the KdG Wireless Network. (If this is not the case surf to https:// /login.html) KDG_ICT_HAND_StudentenWifiXP_v out of 11
Type your User Name (= your address) and the matching Password on the Login Screen. Click Submit. A pop-up frame will open. (Make sure your browser allows pop-ups from the portal.) Leave this small frame opened during the rest of your session. (To do this you will possibly have to ignore the security warning again.) 3.3 Safely end your Internet Session Click Logout in the pop-up that is still opened. (You can retrieve this frame if necessary through https:// /logout.html) Now close all Browser Frames. KDG_ICT_HAND_StudentenWifiXP_v out of 11
4 INSTALLATION OF THE KDG ROOT CERTIFICATE 4.1 Downloading the Installation File Download the KdG Root Certificate Installation File (.msi) at the KdG website at 4.2 Installation Open the Installation File. Ignore the safety warnings by clicking Run. (If you open this file directly, you will have to press Run once more.) The download and the installation will start. Click Next twice (You will possibly get a warning from your Virus Scanner that a script is being run. Ignore this warning by allowing the script.) The installation of the KdG Root Certificate has been completed. Click Close to end Wizard. KDG_ICT_HAND_StudentenWifiXP_v out of 11
5 WORKING WIRELESS WITH KDG_STUDENT You have to run the Configuration Steps to work wireless with KDG_Student only once. You can only do this when your are within the reach of the campus antennae. If the network is within reach, you will automatically be connected next time. Click the Network Pictogram bottom right on the taskbar ( ). If you firstly receive the frame in which you can select a Wireless Network, choose Change settings of this connection. If not, you will immediately get to the Wireless Network Connection Status (figure on the right). Press Properties and proceed to the tab Wireless Networks. KDG_ICT_HAND_StudentenWifiXP_v out of 11
You now get a list with Preferred networks which have a saved configuration on your computer. (If you see KDG_Student in this list you will have to click it and then click Remove.) Press Add to install a new Network Profile. Insert the following properties: Network Name (SSID): KDG_Student (Attention! It is capital sensitive) Network Authentication: WPA2 (Not the PSK version) Data encryption: AES (If you can t find the Network Authentication WPA2, then choose WPA with the Data encryption TKIP.) KDG_ICT_HAND_StudentenWifiXP_v out of 11
Go to the tab Authentication. Choose Protected EAP as EAP Type. Untick Authenticate as computer when computer information is available! Click Properties. Here you tick Karel de Grote ROOT SA at Trusted Root Certification Authorities. KDG_ICT_HAND_StudentenWifiXP_v out of 11
Select Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) at Authentication Method. Click Configure and untick Automatically use my Windows logon name and password. Click OK three times to return to the tab Wireless Network Connection Properties. (If KDG_Open is in the list, erase it by clicking it and choose Remove) Press OK to confirm the chosen settings. Bottom right of your screen, a balloon will appear asking you to select a certificate for your Network Connection. Click it. As credentials fill in your User name ( address) and matching Password. Press OK. Your computer is now trying to connect to KDG_Student. You can notice this by looking at the Network Pictogram. If you succeed, you will receive a balloon saying you are now connected to KDG_Student. All of the Configuration Steps have now been completed and your settings have been saved.
