1 UW Colleges: Patterns of Enrollment and Cultural Diversity Jim McCluskey Department of Geography and Geology University of Wisconsin Colleges March 2010

2 Project Overview The purpose of this study is to present geographic information about the patterns of enrollment and cultural diversity of the UW Colleges in a geographic context. Maps are compiled for the UW Colleges collectively as well as for the individual campuses and UW Online. The geographic information system, GIS, software used for the project is Maptitude (Version 5.0) from Caliper. The Fall 2009 enrollment data is made available by the UW Colleges, Office of Academic Affairs. Projected population data for 2010 is acquired from Caliper. Fivedigit zip code areas for 2008 are used as the mapping unit for the project. The enrollment and demographic maps for individual campuses use the Fisher-Jenks Algorithm for irregular class classification to generate optimal breaks. This method is sometimes referred to as natural breaks method of classification. This project is funded by a summer grant for $250 from UW Marathon County. Special thanks is extended to Gregg Nettesheim, UW Colleges, Office of Academic Affairs, for pre-processing the Fall 2009 enrollment data.
