TEGGS: Reliable Eggs A study on authenticity markers of egg laying regimes Project set-up
2 Reliable food safety, freshness & authenticity Teggs project: Subsidized project by Min. Economic Affairs pieken in de delta Co-financing by provinces Noord- Brabant, Limburg and Gelderland Applicant: Philips Electronics B.V. Approved at September 12, 2009 Officially started Oktober 19, 2009
3 Goals of the TEGGS project Improvement of the overall reliability of eggs: improvement egg classification and (further) reduction of fraud possibilities by implementing existing and developing new technology in the production chain By: Identifying chemical and biological marker(s) for the different categories of eggs Identifying (physical) egg properties that are unique to each egg Implementation of measurements of the selected physical and chemical properties in the production chain Storing the newly acquired information in databases Scope of the project: Dutch eggs, restricted to table eggs
4 Background EU 2002/4/EG: all A class eggs produced in the EU need to be printed with a code. This should happen as soon as possible, preferably at the farmer or at the first sorting station.

6 TEGGS Work Overview Ernst Hermens
7 Go/no-go for phase2 Evaluation of the developed technology Economic criteria / business case Conclusion: the integration of the developed technologies into a sorting machine is not feasible Result: (minor) redistribution of tasks and budgets for wp5 and wp6

9 WP1. Sales structure of the egg sector and sales outlets in 2009
10 WP2. Natural chemical markers for different housing systems Project leader: DSM (Peter Tummers) Executing parties: DSM, TNO Advising parties: Philips, Moba Identification and verification of chemical and biological markers that are highly correlated with the egg laying regimen. The ideal detection technique is one that is fast, shows high selectivity and measures the marker in a non-destructive way and can be integrated in an egg sorting machine.
12 WP 4. Design database Project leader: UT (Pieter Hartel) Executing parties: UT, TNO ICT, BCS Advising parties: Philips, Moba, Nuovo Adapting or expanding existing databases (IKB, KAT, SKAL, PVE). Size of the data flow is a bottle neck; solution is to use coupled databases and data transport by PDA
13 WP 5. Integration and sensor development Project leader: TNO KvL (Sjaak van Veen) Executing parties: TNO KvL, Nuovo, BCS Advising parties: Moba, DSM, Philips, Omega Food, Van Beek Chemical and biological markers: at-line instead of in-line, integration in the chain. Development paths: GC-MS ICPAD IC-LOC swabs qpcr-loc Integration fingerprinting technology & code printing using commercially available cameras 2 patent applications: Molecular (chemical and biological) markers Fingerprinting techniques for tracking&tracing
14 WP 6. Field trials Project leader: TNO KvL (Sjaak van Veen) Executing parties: DSM, Nuovo, BCS, Omega Food, Van Beek Advising parties: Philips, Moba Chemical & biological markers at packing station: Fingerprinting at laying farm:
