3 CHAIR S MESSAGE The faculty, staff, and students of Trinity University s Department of Health Care Administration are pleased to share this annual report with you. This is the third time we have produced such a report, and the response from our alumni and friends has been quite enthusiastic. This report highlights our program s accomplishments over the past academic year, as well as showcases some of the significant achievements of our alumni. It gives us the opportunity to acknowledge and thank the many alumni and friends who helped with our educational process over the past year. They are the partners who help us achieve our vision of being the best program in the country to integrate academic preparation with hands-on learning. The Campaign for Trinity University Health Administration is one way that we are working to achieve a dynamic and sustainable future for our program. We owe a special thanks to the Campaign s Steering Committee for their continuing guidance. In addition, the Health Care Alumni Association provides support and financial aid for our students, while the program s Advisory Council continues to promote resource and program development. It is a real privilege to be a part of Trinity University s Department of Health Care Administration and to serve as chair of such a dynamic program. I want to take this opportunity to thank our talented and committed faculty and staff, loyal alumni, energetic and enthusiastic students, and the many friends who have helped us make the past year such a success. Sincerely, Mary E. Stefl, Ph.D. Department Chair, Health Care Administration 1

4 THE CAMPAIGN FOR TRINITY UNIVERSITY HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION Launched in May of 2007, the Campaign for Trinity University s Health Care Administration continues to benefit and strengthen our program. To date, we have generated nearly $700,000 in current-use funds and more than $2.4 million in endowed and legacy gifts. A highlight of the past year s efforts was a $250,000 joint gift from Doug ( 69, 72) and Martha Hawthorne and the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas to establish the Hawthorne Commons, a dedicated student area within the Health Care office suite. Our campaign began as part of Dream. Inspire. Achieve. The Campaign for Trinity University. While the University s comprehensive campaign will conclude this fall after exceeding its $200 million goal, Health Care Administration will continue raising funds to ensure its long-term viability and continued vitality. Our fundraising efforts are an outgrowth of our strategic vision to become the premier health care administration program that is nationally recognized for its ability to integrate on-campus education with the field of practice. By blending conceptual and experiential learning, our program s real-world approach equips graduates to be exceptional managers and innovators and to assume leadership roles in the health care field. As we developed this vision, it became clear that more resources were needed. We are targeting funds to provide fellowships and other forms of financial aid for students, to strengthen and broaden the curriculum, to enhance our recruiting and residency placement efforts, and to expand the offerings of the Center for Leadership Development in Health Management. Since the campaign s official launch, we have connected with many of our alumni at receptions in San Antonio, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, Chicago, and Nashville. We have had the opportunity to personally visit with other graduates from across the country. Material announcing the campaign was mailed to all of our alumni this year. These efforts have been tremendously rewarding. The financial benefits are, of course, vital and greatly appreciated. But the warm and enthusiastic reception from so many alumni is the foundation for our program s continuing strength. It is this energy and commitment that will keep the Health Care Administration program at Trinity University vital and relevant, and a premier leader in graduate education for years to come. 8 SPOTLIGHT John E. Hornbeak, LFACHE Over the past academic year, John E. Hornbeak, a lifetime fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and an alumnus of the University of Alabama Birmingham s MHA program, has served as Executive-in-Residence for the Trinity program. Mr. Hornbeak retired in 2008 after a highly successful tenure as President and CEO of the Methodist Health Care System in San Antonio. His efforts led to a unique and visible partnership between the former Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital and HCA in Nashville, an affiliation that created one of the region s largest foundations, the Methodist Healthcare Ministries. Over the past year, Mr. Hornbeak has attended many of our on-campus classes. He shares his insight and experience and helps students translate their academic preparation to the world they will enter during their residency year. Mr. Hornbeak has also spent hours advising individual students on their career paths. Our faculty and students have benefited greatly form his expertise and wisdom. Robert N. Shaw, FACHE, 69, 71 Bob Shaw, our Executive-in-Residence for spring 2008, has moved on to new challenges. He is now President of Norton Cancer Institute, part of Norton Healthcare, in Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Shaw s new position will not disrupt his continuing relationship with Trinity University. He will continue to chair the Steering Committee for our Capital Campaign and serve as an adjunct faculty member. He will spend some time on our campus interacting with our students four times a year. Mr. Shaw will also serve as preceptor to one of our 2010 residents. Amer A. Kaissi, Ph.D. Dr. Amer Kaissi was awarded tenure and promotion to Associate Professor this past spring. Tenure is a significant career step and an acknowledgement of Dr. Kaissi s effective teaching, scholarly stature and capability, and important contributions to the program, the university, and the profession. Faculty and staff celebrated Dr. Kaissi s milestone at Aladdin s Eatery, a local Middle Eastern restaurant. AN EVOLVING CURRICULUM With the advent of new 2008 accreditation standards, all accredited Health Care Administration programs now base their curriculum on a Competency Model. That model should specify the skills and knowledge that graduates acquire during the program and clarify what graduates can do after successful completion of the program. Our Competency Model is based on the work of the Healthcare Leadership Alliance, a consortium of the major professional membership organizations in health care. It contains 30 competency statements, organized around the following five areas or domains : Leadership Professionalism Communication and Relationship Management Knowledge of the Health Care Environment Business Skills and Knowledge We developed this model in collaboration with the faculty, preceptors, and alumni from three of the most well-established health care administration programs in the country: University of Alabama Birmingham, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Medical University of South Carolina. The full model can be viewed on our Web site:www.trinity.edu/departments/healthcare. The Competency movement in health management is part of a greater emphasis on accountability throughout higher education and, of course, in health care administration. For us, it s an opportunity to view our curriculum with a new perspective, and to make sure that it remains relevant so that we continue to provide the educational foundation for management and leadership excellence. 6
