1 16 Commonground: Sharing Experiences on Social Good Communication Conference TACSO Turkey Support for CSO Participation February 2015,Istanbul Background With the initiative of Myra Communication Design Agency and participation of DNS (Do Not Smile) Network that brings together European Agencies, both working on the field of social benefit communication, Commonground Conference was held on February 2015 in Istanbul. The Conference aimed to share experiences in Europe and Turkey for a better civil society communication, to enable networking and international information transmission on civil society and social communication and to reveal the differences between social good and commercial communication designs. One of the objectives of TACSO project is to improve the visibility of civil society organisations (CSOs). In line with this objective, TACSO carries out activities to increase the information and skill level of CSOs in the field of communication and to improve the visibility of CSOs in public opinion. Within this context, TACSO Turkey supported the participation of one representative from 9 CSOs engaged in different fields of rights out of İstanbul to the Conference by covering their travel and accommodation expenses. Participants of the Event More than 160 people representing CSOs, private sector, advertising agencies specializing in civil society communication as well as academics participated in the conference held in 26 February There were 34 participants to two paralel activities conducted a day before the conference, on the 25th of February. TACSO supported the participation of 9 CSO representatives out of İstanbul both to the conference and communication workshops held the day before. The participants whose participation was supported by TACSO consisted of representatives of CSOs working in various areas such as children rights, disability rights, gender equality, local development and environment. 1

2 26 Overview of the Event An Effective Tool in the Civil Society Communication: Storytelling" workshop, that was held on 25th February, was designed on the basis of the idea that a civil society communication should not only consist of writing press releases and distributing declarations, but an effective communication requires a storytelling skill to touch people s hearts. The workshop provided practical information on how to use storytelling as a tool of communication. The participants also had the opportunity to see some inspiring examples. The Forum: Influencing Convictions and Decisions which took place parallel to the workshop, the participants discussed the ways to communicate the issues and demands of CSOs to citizens and to be effective in the decision- making processes, through the findings of the research Approaches and Perceptions towards CSOs in Turkey conducted by YADA Foundation in These parallel sessions were actively attended by the participants and was a step into the world of communication, especially for the people representing CSOs, before the conference. On the afternoon of the first day ( 25 February), participants discussed ways to build sustainable and effective communication with CSO s primary stakeholders; that are donors and volunteers, in the Panel conducted by Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TÜSEV). CSO representative panelists talked about different models of fundraising they ve used and the role of communication in donor relations within this framework. On 26th February, the Commonground Conference which took place in Pera Auditorium Museum, commenced with the session «From Theory to Practice: NGO Communication for Good Works». With several presentations on perception of civil society in Turkey and communication of CSOs, this session revealed the overall position and needs of civil society communication. In the «Challenges and Struggles Social Benefit Communication» session presentations on the challenges and issues that CSOs face in communication as well as the possible solutions were delivered. Following the lunch break «Creating Tools to Communicate Social Good» session identified new generation of communication tools in civil society with inspiring examples from the field. Representatives of DNS ( Do Not Smile) Network of Communication Agencies from Germany, Belgium, France, Denmark, England and Italy also shared their experiences and campaigns carried out in their own countries. The event concluded with the Q&A section and contributions of the participants. More detailed information on Commongroun Conference is available at the web site. 2
