8 4100 Field Methods in Archaeology Session I FLD X01 MTWThF 09:00-03:30 pm ARR Dates: May 26 - June 5. Prerequisite of "Consent of Instructor" has been waived for summer session. The first class session will meet in Clark 106 from 1:00-4:00pm on May 26. All other classes will meet in the field from 9:00am-3:30pm: May 27, 28, 29, & June 1, 2,3,4,& 5. This course will be working with the City of Excelsior Springs, Missouri. We will be excavating a historic mineral spring area once nationally known for its mineral waters. These waters were prescribed to remedy all sorts of ailments and to promote overall good health. The spring area has been sporadically flooded through the years resulting in great damage and eventual destruction of the bottling plant and pavilions. This year, we hope to relocate the lost pavilions and bottling plant and learn more about the visitors to this popular turn of the century tourist attraction by what they left behind. Students will be staying at the nearby group lodge at Lake Mauer. During the field school, students will gain valuable experience in excavating, mapping, surveying, artifact analysis, and many other important skills necessary for any archaeological excavation. Additional Travel Fee- $225 per student. Additional travel fee required and can be paid by calling or by visiting FLD X01 WThF 09:00-03:30 pm ARR Dates: May 26 - June 5. 13 4299 Practicum In Conservation 4501 Flowering Plant Families: Phylogeny And Diversification Session V FLD X01 ARR ARR Same as Biol 4920 and Honors Topic; Great Rivers Ecology. with a field trip on 7/30-8/2 Description: The Mississippi and the Missouri rivers play sustain wild ecosystems and human well-being in North America s heartland. Our great river ecosystems are threatened by human activity. Informed citizens and scientists have a great task ahead of them: to use the best science restoring wild, natural ecosystems functions while wisely using river resources to support an emerging ecological civilization. This course will investigate the ecology, human interactions, and conservation of Missouri s great rivers. Some course topics: watersheds, energy flows and geomorphology, water quality, macro-invertebrate zoology, botany, fish biology, and ecological community analysis. We will use asset-based community development to explore how citizen-scientists participate in collaborative Integrated River Basin Management. The course combines on-line learning with a 4-day, adventure-based float down the Mississippi River and is an essential part of Great River Ecology. Under the guidance of Missouri Department of Conservation biologists, we will integrate knowledge about great rivers with hands-on applied field investigation and conservation strategies. We will float the Mississippi in canoes and camp on mid-river islands. The camps will be primitive, backcountry camps without electricity, running water, or flush toilets. Tuition will cover canoes, personal floatation device, food and lodging. Students will need to bring personal backcountry camping gear and a tent. The lab runs from Thursday evening 7/30/2015 until Sunday early afternoon 8/2/2015. Course requires permission of the Honors College. Session VI FLD 002 ARR ARR ARR Session V RSD X01 ARR ARR ARR Great Rivers Ecology Same as Honors Topic: Great Rivers Ecology. with a field trip on 7/30-8/2 Description: The Mississippi and the Missouri rivers play sustain wild ecosystems and human well-being in North America s heartland.
