1 NEWS GERMAN STUDIES DIRECTORY The German Historical Institute in Washington, DC, is currently compiling information for a directory tentatively entitled German Studies in North America: A Directory of Scholars, Research & Publications. This directory will be available as a searchable online guide (http://directory.ghi-dc.org). It includes scholars (post-ph.d.) based in the United States or Canada who are working on German themes in history as well as a variety of humanities and social science disciplines. The purpose of the directory is to facilitate collaboration and networking among scholars. The directory will be fully searchable and can be used to organize conferences and panels, find other scholars working in one s area of interest, and for any number of other academic purposes. Personal invitation s will be sent out in the spring of If you have not been contacted and wish to be included, or if you have any questions or suggestions, please send an to DEUTSCHE FORSCHUNGSGEMEINSCHAFT DELEGATION VISITS THE GHI On September 18, 2002, the director of the GHI, Christof Mauch, welcomed a delegation from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) the German equivalent of the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for Humanities headed by its president, Professor Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker. For two hours, the delegation discussed issues of research funding and academic employment in Germany with GHI fellows and staff as well as German and American visiting scholars in a friendly and constructive atmosphere. While emphasizing that it was the task of the individual German states, not the DFG, to create long-term university positions, Professor Winnacker and his delegation promised that the DFG would accommodate the specific situation of scholars in the humanities by implementing the age and time limits on its fellowship programs with great flexibility in order to help alleviate the job market problems that many well-qualified junior scholars are facing. For the GHI, the visit provided a welcome opportunity to bring its transatlantic perspective to bear on the ongoing debates about the German university system. GHI BULLETIN NO. 32(SPRING 2003) 191

2 LIBRARY REPORT The GHI Library is proud to inform its readers of new acquisitions in several areas that significantly enhance our holdings. First, we expanded our collection of German city histories by approximately forty new titles, including histories of Frankfurt am Main, Nürnberg, and Dresden, but also of smaller towns like Stralsund, Schwerin, and Moers. Second, we have acquired the supplement to the Diazo-Ausgabe der Volltextverfilmung der Deutschen Zeitschriften des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. More than 70 titles will be added and will bring this microfiche collection to almost 600 journals. Every individual journal title is searchable in our online catalogue, and the microfiches are easily accessible through the Microfiche Reader/Printer in the Reading Room. Third, the library significantly expanded its collection of German Americana from the late eighteenth century to the present by purchasing more than five hundred eighteenth and nineteenth-century titles through antiquarian bookstores in Germany. This collection includes travel literature, biographies, letters, and memoirs. New titles will be added every year. Finally, the library acquired the complete parliamentary proceedings of the German Bundestag from 1949 to 1998, which complement the recently acquired Verhandlungen des Reichstags from 1867 to Together, these two series represent a superb resource for research on the political history of Germany from 1867 to the present and are fully accessible in open stacks. We would like to express our gratitude to the following people and institutions for donating books to the GHI library: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik, Deutsches Historisches Institut Rom, Friedrich- Ebert-Stiftung, Georg-Eckert-Institut, Gesellschaft für Exilforschung, Goethe Institut Washington, Jacob Rader Marcus Center, Monika Hein, Stadt Köln, Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Thüringen, Charlotte Lerg, Karl-Egon Lönne, Joe Mait, Patrice Poutros, Shirley J.
