The Committee decided to recommend to the Council to discontinue consideration implementation project PD 80/90 (I) "Second Consultation on the Wood and Wood Products Industry", as the consultation was convened in January The Committee reiterated the view that the process and operations related to evaluation and monitoring projects under implementation must be improved and strengthened. 9. Report on Completed re-projects, The Committee took note the executive summary the pre-project study on "Appropriate Supply Wood Raw Materials in Producing Countries with Dwindling Forest Resources: The Case the Philippines" (Philippines). The the Philippines informed that it has prepared and submitted to ITTO a project proposal based on the Pre-project Study findings. The proposal will be considered by the Committee at its next session. 10. eport on re-proiect Work in rogress, The Committee took note and reviewed the progress work on the following pre-project studies: (i) Industrial Processing Rubber Wood Timber in Africa (Cameroon, Ote d'ivoire, Ghana, Liberia) (ii) Tropical Timber in Construction and Harmonization Stress Grading Rules (iii) Development ork to Phase Out Trade on Unsustainably Produced Timber: I - Assessment Future Mahogany Supply and Alternative Industrial Operations for Sustainable Production; (iv) Institutional Strengthening IBAMA's Forest Products Laboratory; (v) Manpower Development the Sarawak Forest Sector. 11. onsideration Protect Proposals Taking into account the Report the Panel Experts for Technical Appraisal Project Proposals, the Committee appraised and evaluated nineteen proposals:

However, the Committee recognized that the Panel mechanism set by the Council has contributed significantly to improve most the project proposals and that it seems to be an effective tool to assist the Committee with the technical appraisal projects. The Committee also considered two project ideas: UMBERTITLESUBMITTED BY PCI(VIII)/7Utilization, Market Research, International Trade andbolivia Promotion Non-Conventional Tropical Timber Species for Different Industrial Uses
5 Rev page.1 7 PCI(VIII)/8 Providing Consultancy Services to the Timber Industry on Production Technology and Industrial Organization Bolivia The detailed results the Committee's evaluation and appraisal project proposals, pre-projects and ideas are presented in I. 12. Decision on Pre-Proiect Work The Committee decided to implement a pre-project study on "Technical and Economic Feasibility Large-Scale Construction Wooden House in Brazil", submitted by the Brazilian. The proposal describing the approved pre-project is reproduced in document PCI(VIII)/6. The Committee further decided to implement two pre-projects to assist the ian and the country's National Association the Small Scale imber Industrialists to review and redraft their respective project proposals numbered PD 145/91 Rev.1 and PD 146/91 ev.l. The respective approved pre-projects are entitled "The Industrial Utilization and Marketing Eucalyptus Plantations the Province Loja, " and "Feasibility a Promotion Center for Furniture Manufacturing in ". The terms reference for these two pre-projects are reproduced in II and III, respectively. The detailed results the Committee's evaluation and decision on this pre-project proposal is presented in I. 13. ecision on ellowship pplications Under roiect PD 60/89 M.F.Il The Committee authorized the establishment a Selection Panel to evaluate fellowship application submitted in time for the Eighth Session and select the successful candidates. The selection panel was composed by: Mr. David Boulter, Chairman (Canada), Mr. Eric ammerts van Bueren (The Netherlands), Dr. Gary R. Lindell (U.S.A.), Dato' Baharuddin Haji Ghazali (), Dr. Amantino Ramos de Freitas (Brazil), and Pr. Nils-Erik Nilsson (Sweden). The applications approved are listed in IV. 14. Dates and Venue the Tenth Session The Committee decided that the date and venue will be agreed upon by ITTC in its Tenth Session. its Tenth Session 15. Any Other Business The Committee recommended that documents for printed and copied in recycled paper using as far paper sheets. its future sessions be as possible both sides 16. Assess the potential options and feasibility industrial use small logs from Eucalyptus plantations in Loja. The assessment shall take into account: (i) existing experiences and knowledge in Eucalyptus processing and utilization; (ii) determination production capability Loja; (iii) sites for pilot or demonstration processing units; (iv) plantation management systems and logging methods; (v) markets and marketing possibilities; and (vi) community organization and training requirements. 2. Prepare a proposal to assist local indigenous Loja communities to mange and utilize their Eucalyptus plantations.
