1 IAG/AIG International Workshop on Objective Geomorphological Representation Models: Breaking through a New Geomorphological Mapping Frontier Department of Civil Engineering - University of Salerno (Italy) European Cilento & Vallo di Diano Geopark (Italy) October 15-19, 2012 This event is included among the activities planned Week of Planet Earth promoted by the Italian Federation of Earth Sciences Background Geomorphological Mapping has seen a resurgence in the last years due to the impressive power of morphometric analysis, remote sensing, and other computational concepts and tools. This is also reflected in the worldwide renaissance of textbooks on geomorphological mapping and geomorphometry like for instance the books Geomorphometry: Concepts, Software, Applications, by Hengl & Reuter (2008), or Mapping Geomorphological Environments, by Pavlopoulos et al. (2009) or Geomorphological Mapping: methods and applications, by Smith et al. (2011) and a number of new papers appeared on object-oriented oriented segmentation of digital terrain models, derived from different sources at different scales and with different aims for Earth and other Planets. Object-oriented segmentation of digital terrain models is stepping out as one of the most advanced and meaningful methodologies to this regards. Still it is in a very experimental phase and needs strong advancement to be applied with confidence in a variety of environments. In Engineering g Geology it has been proposed and already widely adopted the concept of the geological model (Fookes, 1997). We feel that also in geomorphology there is a need for driving the expert towards a similar approach and in this field an objective and meaningful mapping techniques (integrating computer models and field verification) is needed and developed in an experimental way. We are keen to build up a network of users/developers/donors interested in applying objective and meaningful landform segmentation for base or applied studies in geomorphology. You are invited to attend a Workshop where ideally both developers and users of object-oriented oriented landform segmentation methodologies will meet in the usual rigorous but informal atmosphere that is so typical of the geomorphological community. The Workshop will include a number of keynote lectures by leading researchers ers in the field, followed by extensive discussion sessions during which we hope a wider consensus and a common way forward could be established. A one-day field/on-boat trip in the Cilento & Vallo Diano Geopark will follow. We hope that this effort could also develop into a new joint Working Group of IAG (International Association of Geomorphologists) and IAEG (International Association of Engineering ing Geologists) in the coming years. This workshop would like to embrace the spirit of sharing knowledge among peers in an innovative way. To achieve this we will share with all registered participants digital materials (like detailed DEM, aerial photo, topo maps, geological maps, etc), through an ftp account, that you can use to map out the geomorphology of the field trip areas -using your own methods and experience. We ask you to bring your own mapping outputs at the workshop: ideally in this way we would like to stimulate the debate and exchange of knowledge among participants on the best integration of mapping methods to achieve the most suitable mapping results of this area. We look forward to your active participation and enjoying the debate. After your registration you will receive a username and password to access the ftp site ftp:// /pub/ from where you can download copy of pertinent scientific papers, maps and digital data. After your registration you will receive a username and password to access the ftp site ftp:// /pub/ from where you can download the digital data.
