The sampling and analysis was requested by Ms. Shanon Arnold, Space and Capital Planning Manager at LU. The purpose of the sampling and analysis was to determine whether surface dust in selected offices of the CB contained asbestos fibres. Summary Statement Chrysotile asbestos fibres were identified in surface dust samples collected from CB was not identified in samples of surface dust collected from two other locations in the CB (C84064 and CBX4020) and one reference location in Avila Centre (AC156). was identified in a piece of sprayed fireproofing (SFP) observed on the top surface of a display case in C8X4020. Background TGCL understands that SFP above the suspended ceilings on the fourth floor of the CB is a friable asbestos-containing material (ACM). TGCLfurther understands that fallen SFP was observed on a work surface in room C84009, a private office, in December of TGCL confirmed that the SFP on the desk was asbestos-containing and, subsequent to that analysis, TGCL completed air sampling in four separate locations on the fourth floor of the CB (Please refer to TGCL's report entitle d, A, Results of Air Sampling for on the Fourth Floor of the Centennial Building, dated December 4,2074). Although the results of air sampling showed that the airborne concentration of fibres measured for all four locations on the fourth floor of the CB were within a typical range for indoor air ( fibres/cubic centimeter of air) further analysis of settled dust was requested to address occupant concerns regarding the potential for occupant exposure to asbestos Innovfiiior Drive. 2 zut LTD Ms. Shanon Arnold Project No A March 27, 2015 Methodology and Results Ms. Jacquie Elvish, BSc, CRSP, TGCL's Senior Health and Safety Specialist, completed a site visit to LU to collect samples on March 4, Representative samples of settled dust were collected from horizontal surfaces in three rooms in the CB as well as in a room in the Avila Centre building (AC), for comparison purposes. A bulk sample of material was also collected from one of the rooms in the CB upon observation of a larger portion of fibrous material that was not considered to be consistent with settled dust. Settled dust samples were collected into a 0.8 micron mixed cellulose ester membrane filter cassette using a high flow air sampling pump. Sample locations of up to 0.5 square metres were selected with consideration for the following factors: Observed presence of visible, settled dust; and An area where the observed settled dust could reasonably be expected to originate from the ceiling space. The bulk sample was collected with forceps and placed into a clean, unused, sealable plastic bag. Each sample was labelled with a unique identifier and submitted to the TGCL Hazardous Materials Laboratory for analysis by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)following the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Test Method EPA/600/R-93 /176: Method for the Determinotion of in Bulk Buitding Moteriqls, June The laboratory certificate of analysis is attached.
