Her husband was contacted overseas with news of her death. According to a Google search, D Auriol was a jewelry designer and exhibited her work every season in London, Paris, New York, Milan, and various other cities. She was trained at London s Asprey, a 219-year-old jeweler to the British Royals. She was British, fourth generation to be born in India, and grew up between Singapore and Ibiza. D Auriol was living in Hong Kong since 1983, and was involved in the grassroots organization Child Welfare Scheme since 1999, which supports 30,000 disadvantaged children and their families a year, where she later became director. According to her website, profits from D Auriol s jewelry business went towards charities for children, women, and the environment. D Auriol stayed at the medical center overnight after she went through a medical procedure on Jan. 21, according to Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Lincoln Hoshino. The woman was unresponsive during the approximately three hours of negotiation before she jumped from the building. Unless the medical clinic has a permit that allows for overnight patient stays, patients are not allowed to stay overnight at a medical center, according to City Attorney Larry Wiener. She was allegedly the patient of Dr. Brian Novak, a well-known plastic surgeon. According to attorney Ronald Richards, who is not affiliated with the case, there is no law that requires a lock to prevent access to the roof. The owners of the building are also not responsible for someone s decision to commit suicide. The Camden Medical Arts building is one of the tallest structures in the area according to building s property management company Douglas Emmett s website. 3 briefs cont. from page 2 Recreation and Parks Commission approves fine art placement at Beverly Gardens Park but disagrees on proposed art Susan Gersh Frances Bilak Recreation and Parks Commission approved of the placement of a fine art sculpture at Beverly Gardens Park with a 3-2 vote. At the Recreation and Parks Commission meeting on Jan. 28, Commissioner S i m o n e Friedman, Susan Gersh, and Chair H o w a r d R o s o f f approved the placement while Vice Chair Robert Anderson and Commissioner Frances Bilak were opposed. The Fine Arts Commission proposed an installation from artist Carol Bove to be placed in Beverly Gardens Park s Northeast quadrant. I have some concerns whether or not it would be something that would attract children to climb in or on or through it and if it would require additional expenses for protection, Recreation and Parks Chair Howard Rosoff said. Fine Arts Commissioner Sandy Pressman said that the art piece has not been created yet but will be made of coated steel, it will be rounded with no hard edges, and it will not get climbed on. Is this art piece worthy to be placed in a permanent installation in our parks? I don t think it is, Anderson said. I m all in for art in our parks, I m just opposed to permanent installations in our park. Anderson suggested leasing art pieces for a year from art collectors and being able to move different pieces of art around the park. Gersh said that the only areas where temporary artwork could be placed would be in front of City Hall. I m not actually prepared to defend the piece but I can tell you that the Fine Art Commission has a whole procedure looking for artwork, Pressman said. The piece would ultimately be approved by City Council. After the vote was taken for the placement approval, Rosoff clarified that the park location to place the art is approved, but not the actual piece of art. It is not the role of the [Recreation and Parks] Commission to approve a piece of art work for selection, Director of Community Services Steve Zoet said. According to the Recreation and Parks Department Memorandum on Jan. 28, with the Recreation and Parks Commission approval of the location placement of the art, the Fine Arts Commission and City Council liaisons will meet to discuss the Carol Bove art piece and recommended location for placement before bringing the proposal to City Council for formal approval. Beverly Hills Bar Association to honor Greene and Nash on Feb. 19 The Beverly Hills Bar Association will honor trial attorney Browne Greene and Superior Court Judge Michael Nash at the fourth annual Litigation Browne Greene Awards dinner on Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at the Montage Beverly Hills. Nash will receive the Ronald M. George Award for Judicial Excellence, and Greene will be presented the Michael Nash Excellence in Advocacy Award, which honors a trial lawyer whose legal skills, trial strategy and courtroom teamwork led to case successes and gives back to the legal profession and the community. Nash received his undergraduate degree from UCLA and his law degree for Loyola Law School. Before being appointed as a Municipal Court Judge in 1985, he served as deputy attorney general in the criminal division of the California Attorney General s Office. In addition, the ordinance includes zone text amendments to address the growing trend of short-term rentals in single- and multi-family residential zones. The ordinance and related entitlements outlined above were previously reviewed by the Planning Commission on November 21, The Planning Commission unanimously voted to recommend approval of the ordinance and development agreement, and voted to approve the Planned Development Permit amendment, contingent on the City Council approving the above ordinance and development agreement. The matter will now be considered by the City Council during the public hearing described in this notice. The ordinance and related entitlements have been assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City. An Environmental Impact Report (EIR) was previously adopted by the City Council on December 3, 2002 for the existing mixed-use building on the subject site. Therefore, an addendum to the original EIR has been prepared to evaluate the project changes outlined above, and will be presented to the City Council for consideration. 5 Robertson Blvd. Charleville Blvd. Horace Mann School s construction schematic as of Feb DSA approvals and temporary staff brings Horace Mann s new planned facilities closer to construction The Division of the State Architect approved design plans on Jan. 10 for Horace Mann s two story classroom facilities and underground parking that will begin construction in April. We re getting closer to having all the [DSA] approvals we need to do the groundbreaking in April, BHUSD Superintendent Gary Woods said. The construction project will be done in phases that will allow the least disruptive environment during school session, according to Woods. The single-level subterranean parking will be constructed first, and then the two story facilities will build on top of that. Projected construction time will take approximately two years starting April, although it may change depending on the construction process. After the new facilities are completed, the students will have class sessions in the new building while refurbishments to the old structure will take place. The last Horace Mann reconstruction phase will be the demolition of the rotunda around the building in the middle of the campus. The Citizens Oversight Committee raised concerns at their recent meeting on Jan. 23 about the resignation of the chief facilities officer on Jan. 31 and the effect it will have on the Horace Mann project. This construction project is big enough to begin with, and now there s an even more daunting task when we lose one of our key people, Citizens Oversight Committee member Bradley Gibbons said. It s great that we have someone in a bind, [but] we really need someone from the start to finish. According to Woods, a construction superintendent who will interface with the project contractors will be in charge of the Horace Mann project. A project manager will also be on site to oversee the construction, and has been working on the project for almost a year. Hiring is not a quick process [and] it could take two to three months before we find, certify, and approve a director of faculties, said Woods. 7 people & profiles Mayor John Mirisch Mirisch attended the 82nd U.S. Conference of Mayors from Jan. 22 to Jan. 24 Tell us about visiting Washington D.C. [Washington D.C.] was very interesting. The most interesting was being able to talk to mayors from other cities and hear what their issues and problems are and what their challenges are. is not facing but I do think that in terms of looking at our unfunded pension liabilities and the fiscal sustainability of our City Hall that should be a major focal point for us and that s a challenge that s facing a lot of other cities as well. Who were some of the mayors you met? I met mayors from across the country. I think they had mayors from 46 of the 50 states or something like that. What were some of the topics that were discussed at the conference? Transportation, infrastructure upgrades and investments. There were sessions that discussed culture and how that can benefit a city, and of course that very much applies to us as well. What are some ideas that you brought back with you to Beverly Hills? It was about an exchange of ideas as well. There are some issues that our city What are similar challenges that Beverly Hills has in common with other U.S. cities? I think that there are a number of challenges that are just sort of the basic ones about running cities. I think one of the good points [was] that we have the ability to get things done in a way that something like Congress can t do because of the gridlock. We should take advantage of those opportunities and be as inclusive as possible when it comes to having residents participate in local government. You have been passionate about the need for pension reform. Was this subject discussed at the conference? Mayor John Mirisch in front of the President s podium in Washington D.C. That wasn t one of the subjects in the breakout sessions but in my own discussions [I] did talk about that, and did find that that was a challenge facing a lot of other cities as well and a major source of concern. Why do you think it s important that Beverly Hills participate in this conference? I think the exchange of ideas is good and I think it s also important to have our voice heard in various issues. I think that kind of dialogue and outreach is of great value for us to see where we are in relations to some other cities and what we re doing. Anything else about the conference you would like to share with us? It was cold, I missed the day[time] because I had meetings, but I certainly thought it was very stimulating and informative and interesting. 9 coverstory Centennial Sing-Along Celebration held Tuesday By Nancy Yeang Beverly Hills celebrated its centennial on Jan. 28 with a Centennial Concert Sing-Along to a packed audience at the Saban Theater. Tonight s celebration is not just a concert, but it s a sing-along, Mayor John Mirisch said. You don t need to be a singer, I m proof of that. You just need to have a song in your heart, and I think all of us have that. The variety of songs performed throughout the night were from Beverly Hills composers and songwriters. The lyrics were lit up on the screen for the audience to follow along as volunteers went up and down the aisle with a microphone to catch a singer. First to perform was the LA Lawyers Philharmonic, with founder and conductor Gary Greene. The 75 member orchestra includes lawyers, judges, law students and legal staff and they replaced their legal papers with music sheets. Mirisch took the front stage and joined the orchestra with a ukulele as he performed in Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head. One of the perks of being 92 years old, Betty White said as two Beverly High football players guided her on stage. Every old broad has to have a hottie. White s excitement and Norman pride came out while she sang the Beverly High fight song and asked the audience to join her. As an alumni of Beverly Hills High School, I m still filled with Norman spirit, White said. Richard M. Sherman took over the LA Lawyers Philharmonic and conducted a sampling of music from a Spoonful of Sherman, which featured songs written and composed by Sherman and his late brother Robert B. Sherman. The audience sang along with familiar Disney songs from Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, and the most played song in the world, It s A Small World, as magenta stage lights criss-crossed through the audience. A video tribute to the late Beverly High choral director Joel Pressman was presented and was followed by performances by the Beverly High Madrigal Singers. They energized the stage as they slapped their hands on their knees and clapped their hands to their rendition of Weezer s Beverly Hills. The City was treated with a performance from 14-year-old opera singer Golda Berkman. She entered the stage with a v-neck gold dress with a sequined neckline and gold taffeta draping around her legs. She opened her arms out towards the audience as she sang, Summertime.
