7 Big Data Big data is a blanket term for any collection of data sets so large and complex that is becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools or traditional data processing applications. Wikipedia definition
8 Big data is being generated by everything around us at all times. Every digital process and social media exchange produces it. Systems, sensors and mobile devices transmit it. Big Data Large Company Definition Big data is arriving from multiple sources at an alarming velocity, volume and variety. To extract meaningful value from big data, you need optimal processing power, analytics capabilities and skills.

14 Data in Training How do we determine who needs to be trained on what? How do we determine if the training was successful? What do we do with the training results? How do we measure the impact on the business? Big Data can help us answer these questions, not just report on them.
15 Airline Example Training manager looked at the top 10 reasons for flight cancelations. Determined which problems could be solved through training.
16 Airline Example Created a course designed to address the specific deficiencies which contributed to the problem Delivered the content to a control group Monitored the number of flight cancelations over the next 90 days of planes with maintenance provided by the newly trained employees

19 Airline Example Outcome The Training Manager was able to demonstrate that the additional training provided to the mechanics took the number of flight cancelations from the top 10 list and moved them outside of the top 100. The training manager used a solution that helped manage the process and ensure the new training was not only being delivered, but being followed. This resulted in millions of dollars being saved.
20 Traditional Data This example was almost Big Data. However it was all done using traditional reporting and BI data. To be continued
21 What Data is the Right Data? Training data often is either incorrect or irrelevant because it is missing business context. Big Data helps address this
22 Training departments typically use three different types of data. Big Data will change how training departments look at this information.
23 1. Basic Training Data The most basic types of reports are on raw data with no analysis or tie to the outcome. Student X scored 95% on an exam Class Y had 100% attendance for all 3 days Question 3 was answered correctly 15 out 20 times Was this training successful? What was the impact on the business?
24 2. Training Data Analytics The next level of reporting involves some interpretation of the training data which gives some context. Usually these reports are customized to provide meaning. Statistical analysis across all learners Analysis across courses Test item analysis Kirkpatrick Typically these reports are used within a training department and rarely tie training to business performance.
25 Analytics A class was offered for senior management. The class took 3 days to complete It was held at an offsite location 100% participation from management 100% completion Every employee showed a measurable improvement in performance.
26 Analytics (True Story) The class was a three day golf lesson Did it add any value to the company? Big Data in training could connect the dots between those individuals and deals closed on the golf course by them.
27 3. Business Intelligence Business Intelligence has been around for decades. However, the tools and science behind BI has evolved rapidly over the past two decades. BI connects the dots between internal systems and helps you draw conclusions based on the data.

29 4. Big Data Big Data is the next in the evolution of using data. In HR Big Data companies are being called Human Data companies. Big Data is not just about reporting and analytics, but more about applications that derive meaning from the data.
30 Big Data Applications Big Data companies tend to be SaaS The application collect data from both internal and external sources The businesses scale by leveraging their data connections and customizing the rules for each new customer. Traditional systems focused on the what is going on in your company, these can tell you why.

Additional information that could be included and become part of the analysis would be: Flight cancelation data of other airlines at the same locations Analysis of the mechanic's training history who did and did not make the mistakes before the new training was delivered Analysis of employment history Analysis of the aircraft compared to other models Analysis of the aircraft flight data
32 Airline Example Continued.. Using the additional information a company could gain far more insight into their flight cancelation problems. Are the problems also occurring for other airlines who do maintenance at the same location? Does this problem only occur for certain models or years of this aircraft? Are certain employees with specific backgrounds the right people to do this maintenance?

34 Big Data Bias Search engine companies were among the first to leverage Big Data. Many of them look at what you read, buy, view etc to give you better results. This is extremely effective for one person at a time. How accurate are the results when you are doing a search for someone else?
35 Business Use VS Public Big Data in business can draw from known sources and solve a known problem. Big Data in public applications is not always as predictable.
36 Big Data for Management WHAT DOES IT CHANGE?
37 The Obvious. Big Data is a tool, it is not the solution If you don t know what you are looking for, Big Data won t help you find it. If you look for your answer in the wrong place, you will find the wrong answer. These are probably the top 3 most common assumptions management makes.
38 Context The key to effectively using Big Data as part of your strategy is making sure the data is relevant and you are connecting the right sources. One of the most common mistakes made is drawing a connection between groups of data that may exist, but have no meaning.
