11 A Hybrid Online Learning Approach in an Urban School District

12 : Purpose The purpose of APS Online is to provide for a choice for Aurora Public Schools students who wish to pursue an online alternative to the traditional high school program. According to the Sloan Consortium, the overall number of K 12 students nationwide engaged in online courses in is estimated at 1,030,000. This represents a 47% increase since In Colorado alone the estimated enrollment for is about 12,000, up from 9,200 the previous year. Many families across the nation and here in Colorado are increasing choosing online courses over traditional high school courses for a variety of reasons.

13 About Aurora Public Schools Aurora Public Schools is the sixth largest school district in Colorado and one of the most diverse. Our more than 35,000 students come from over 100 different countries and speak more than 90 languages. 38% of our students are second language students. These students speak 95 different languages with 89% of this group being Spanish speakers. 63.4% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. There are 55 schools in the district: 2 early childhood education, 28 elementary schools, 3 K 8 schools, 7 middle schools, 4 comprehensive high schools, 3 Pilot schools, 1 vocational/technical college, 1 gifted and talented K 8 school and 6 charter schools and one online high school. 18 Netbooks Learning Anywhere, Anytime Students without computers at home or internet access are given a netbook to access their courses.

19 Classroom Tools The Personal Touch Students are required to attend class two sessions per week. Students receive individual and small group instruction using interactive whiteboard and a visualizer.

35 Learning on the Go FCC Endowment FCC News release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NEWS MEDIA CONTACT: September 23, 2010 Learning On the Go: The FCC is launching a pilot program that supports off campus wireless Internet connectivity for mobile learning devices. Education doesn t stop at the schoolyard gate or the library door. Digital textbooks and other innovative wireless devices allow students to learn in a real world context, inside the classroom and beyond. Because of their low cost and accessibility, these mobile devices can also help advance digital equality, particularly for children from economically disadvantaged communities.

36 Learning on the Go FCC Program The "Learning On the Go" program will be piloted in 14 states and will fund wireless broadband for ten laptop programs, two virtual schools, three handheld device programs, and five technology programs.

37 Learning on the Go FCC Endowment ADAM GOLDSTEIN, The Aurora Sentinel Aurora Sentinel 0 comments AURORA An Aurora Public Schools program that offers online learning tools for at risk high school students will receive extra funding from the Federal Communications Commission next year. The Aurora Public Schools Online High School is one of 20 schools and libraries nationwide that will get about $9 million in funding for the school year through the FCC s Learning On The Go initiative. The initiative rewards programs that use innovative tools and models to connect students with online learning. We set aside a pool of money and asked schools to come up with the best proposals, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said in a statement, adding that the commission received almost 100 applications. We have selected the top 20 projects. (They) will all deliver internet connectivity and digital learning over mobile wireless devices.
