1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job title: Purpose of the post: Website and graphic designer (full time or job share, with possible split of activities web/graphic) The UBU Marketing & Communications department is responsible for the effective and high quality communications of the Union s activities and campaigns to Bristol students, and other stakeholders. The department is also responsible for gathering information, insight and understanding of the diverse student body at Bristol to better inform UBU s plans and activities. Main duties and responsibilities The post holder will develop UBU s web presence to increase levels of engagement and interaction. The post holder will design visual marketing material appropriate for a range of different audiences and be responsible for UBU s visual identity. Key to this role is being able to identify new opportunities whilst managing the day-to-day smooth running of the organisation s online and design output. 1.0 Website management and development Manage and update the Students Union website and Content Management Systems (currently Membership Solutions Limited) Develop the website with additional sections and resources as necessary to deliver a greater range of student services online and to enhance its market reach Identify and implement new opportunities for development, increased engagement / traffic Support the Marketing and Communications Manger to develop the UBU web and virtual strategy Work closely with the University website team to ensure a high Union presence as well as maintaining and developing integrated systems Be responsible for tracking and reporting analytics across all websites and social network channels Troubleshoot problems with online channels as they arise Support and train UBU staff and students to update content and manage sections of the website independently Develop systems, templates, information and training to enable UBU clubs and societies to manage their own sections of the website Ensuring that UBUs web presence is at the forefront of technological and market advances 2.0 Social networking, online community and external websites Develop the Students Union use of social networking and to horizon-scan for future opportunities Develop the Students Union own website as a dynamic online community To increase the presence of the Students Union on external websites

2 3.0 Graphic design To design a varied range of material for print and online including publications, posters, fliers, adverts, web banners and other design required for Students Union departments, campaigns and events Work with departments of UBU to develop design briefs for marketing activity Contribute to ideas for marketing campaigns Work closely with MarComms team and Union departments to understand graphic design needs and timetables Coordinate the design and development production schedule to ensure organisational needs and priorities are met Monitor and promote house style and brand guidelines across the organisation Manage the performance and output of any outsourced design activity Develop and enhance UBUs visual identity 4.0 Work with the MarComms team to continually enhance the department s strategy and template design Monitor and report analytics Deliver campaigns alongside the MarComms team 5.0 Intranet and internal comms Develop and improve UBU s internal communications system 6.0 Digital display screens Develop and manage the use of UBUs digital display screens across campus 7.0 Other Attend weekly organisation team briefings, departmental team meetings, monthly organisational development sessions and other such meetings to promote inter department communications, development of new ideas and success sharing. Undertake such other tasks as may be necessary in order to achieve the vision, mission and values of UBU, as directed. Promote the vision, mission and values of UBU through your interactions with internal and external stakeholders throughout your daily working routine. Contribute to relevant focus groups and Union and University committees as required. Attend conferences and seminars that are of benefit to the Union as required. Be proactive in establishing good working relationships both within the University community and local community promoting the work of UBU and developing effective partnerships to deliver future work.

3 Training and Professional Development UBU has achieved the Investors in People standard and considers professional development as key to the success of the individual within the organisation and future career development. All staff are offered regular professional development through team briefings, organisation development sessions and in-house training. Each staff member takes part in the annual performance assessment review and develops a personal leadership plan. It is expected that the post-holder will be offered the opportunity to participate in additional opportunities and training that is relevant to his/her duties and that the post-holder will be expected to undertake such opportunities as may be reasonably practicable. Notes The nature of the post will, at times, require additional commitment over and above normal office hours. Payment for these hours is incorporated in the salary offered. This job description does not form part of a contract of employment.

4 Person Specification Job title: Web & Graphic Designer Qualifications (at least 1 of the following) Degree level qualification (or equivalent relevant experience) Essential Desirable Tested at interview Tested at application Design/IT specific qualification Experience 2 years website build and graphic design experience across a range of marketing activity, including online, , print and PR Experience working within in a marketing department or agency Good understanding of marketing planning and campaign delivery Experience working for a similar demographic audience Experience of Content Management Systems Knowledge Web Design with HTML & CSS and integrated feeds Working with mailing list systems (e.g. Mailchimp) High degree of web literacy and good working knowledge of current web technologies and social networking. Required to analyse stats, upload content onto website, send s and other online activity as required. Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Photoshop, InDesign, PowerPoint, Skills and Abilities A forward thinking and dynamic approach to web development continuously knowledgeable of new technologies, techniques and platforms A fantastic visual designer with an eye for quality and an ability to design for a range of audiences/stakeholders A good communicator via the written and spoken word Ability to be imaginative and think laterally about

Elected officers, managers and staff of UBU including the Trustee Board, the University of Bristol marketing and communications department 35 hours per week, plus additional hours as necessary. Flexibility is required there will be an expectation of longer hours during term time (especially October). Individual applications indicating potential job shares are actively encouraged, with a possible split of activities between web & graphic.
