2 Biographies of Workshop Lecturers and Facilitators IPA Researchers Christopher Udry Yale University, Innovations for Poverty Action Research Affiliate Christopher Udry is the Henry J. Heinz, II Professor of Economics at Yale University. He is a development economist whose research focuses on rural economic activity in sub-saharan Africa. He has conducted extensive field research in West Africa on technological change in agriculture, the use of financial markets, asset accumulation and gift exchange to cope with risk, gender relations and the structure of household economies, property rights and a variety of other aspects of rural economic organization. He spent two years as a secondary school teacher in northern Ghana, and has been a visiting scholar at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria and at the University of Ghana at Legon. At Yale, Udry has directed the Economic Growth Center and served as the Chair of the Department of Economics. He teaches graduate courses on development economics, and undergraduate courses on economic development in Africa. Simone Schaner Dartmouth University, Innovations for Poverty Action Research Network Professor Schaner studies the health and savings decisions of households in low-income countries. Recent projects include a study of barriers to the use of formal savings accounts in Kenya and a study of how households health seeking behavior responds to subsidized antimalarials and malaria diagnostic tests in the Kenyan private sector. IPA Staff Emily Cupito, Project Coordinator VSLA Uganda Study, IPA Emily Cupito joined IPA in She currently coordinates the evaluation of Village Savings and Loan Associations in Ghana, Malawi and Uganda. She resides in Kampala, Uganda. After the analysis concludes, Emily will become the Africa Project Coordinator for the Microsavings and Payment Innovation Initiative. In this role, she will help develop new savings projects and assist in outreach to local researchers. She holds a Master's in Public Policy from Duke University and a Bachelor in Economics and Public Policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hana Freymiller, Survey Coordinator, IPA Hana provides technical support on questionnaire design and field management to IPA projects around the world. She joined the research support time in 2011 after two years in Ghana managing three randomized controlled trials. Prior to joining IPA, she was the Knafel traveling fellow, researching household decision making around sustainable farming decisions in eight

3 different countries. She has a bachelors in economics from Wellesley College in the United States. Niall Keleher, Research and Training Director, IPA Niall Keleher joined IPA in January As Director of Research Methods and Training, he provides technical and administrative support to IPA staff in Malawi. He has worked to design and carry out more than a dozen projects in Malawi in the fields of rural finance, agriculture, transportation and business training. He has extensive experience conducting research in rural and urban Malawi. Prior to joining IPA, he worked extensively on designing surveys and implementing development research projects while working for the World Bank. He holds a Bachelors degree in economics and international studies from the Johns Hopkins University and a Masters in Public Administration in International Development from the Harvard Kennedy School. Alexandra Kobishyn, Partner Outreach Coordinator, IPA Alex works on project development at IPA, with a focus on new projects under the Microsavings and Payments Innovation Initiative. She joined IPA in May Alex graduated with a Master's degree in Development and International Business Diplomacy from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. At Georgetown, she concentrated on economic development and worked at FINCA International in their Greater Middle East Unit. She also has an undergraduate degree in political science and teacher preparation from Princeton University. Karen Levy, Senior Director, IPA Dr. Karen Levy is a Senior Director at Innovations for Poverty Action. Her current work focuses on the development and implementation of school-based health policies and programs, particularly related to deworming. From 2006 through 2010, she served as Kenya Country Director for IPA. Since January of 2009, Karen has also served as Regional Director for Africa of Deworm the World. In this role, she works with senior government health and education officials, providing technical and logistical support for the design, implementation, and monitoring of national school-based deworming programs. The first program she worked on in Kenya successfully reached over 3.6 million children. Karen received a BA with Honors from Brown University in 1994, an MSc with Distinction in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics in 2000, and a PhD in Development Planning from the University of London in

4 Beniamino Savonitto, Project Director, IPA Beniamino oversees the development of new savings projects and the outreach to local researchers under the Microsavings and Payments Innovation Initiative. He joined IPA in 2008 for a brief experience in Mali and then moved to the Washington DC office to manage two Village Savings and Loans Associations evaluations in East Africa as well as a series of ICT-related projects in Latin America on topics ranging from sexual education, financial literacy to environmental campaigns. He holds a Master's degree in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor in political science from LUISS University in Rome. Marc Shotland, Director of Training at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab Marc Shotland holds a Masters in Public Administration in International Development (MPA/ID) degree from Harvard University s Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor s degree in Economics from Williams College. He first joined Professors Duflo and Banerjee in the summer of 2002 to run randomized evaluations of education interventions as a field research associate in India. In 2004 he joined the Poverty Action Lab s Cambridge office as a research manager. He left in 2006 to earn his Masters at Harvard before rejoining J-PAL in 2008 in his current position. Gean Spektor, Training and Project Development Associate, IPA Gean Spektor joined IPA in June of 2011 as a Training and Project Development Associate. Previously she worked at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab as a Research Associate, where she focused on data analysis of projects in Sierra Leone. She holds an undergraduate degree in Economics from Williams College. Asman Suleiman, Project Coordinator, IPA Asman joined IPAK in September 2007 as an Evaluation Coordinator working on the Multiple Use water Use systems project in Nyahururu Central Kenya. Now a PC working on 3 projects (The Multiple Use Water Systems, The Role of Mobile Money in Business Development and The Tea Initiative). Formerly worked with Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Institute of the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (TSBF-CIAT), International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy Analysis and Development (Egerton University) Nairobi. Matthew White, Data Coordinator, IPA Matthew joined IPA in 2010 to coordinate a micro-health-insurance evaluation in Nairobi. In 2011, he moved to the New Haven, Connecticut office to join the research support team, where he provides individual project support, and works with others to develop research resources and standards for IPA. Matthew holds a B.A. in philosophy from Yale University. 4

6 Biographies of Workshop Participants Mrs. Ifeyniwa Anthonia Achike, Ph.D, Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Economics, University of Nigeria, Nsukka Dr. (Mrs.) A. I. Achike is a Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She teaches in the same Department at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. David Agu, Ph.D Student in Economics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka David Onyinyechi Agu is a Researcher and a PhD candidate at the Department of Economics, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His Research Interests cover Open Economy Macroeconomics Financial Markets, International Capital Flows, Trade and Regional Integration, Public Finance, and Monetary Policy, etc. Mamadou Alhadji Ly, Ph.D Student Fellow in Economics at Cheik Anta Diop s University, Senegal Mamadou Alhadji Ly is currently a PhD fellow at Management and Economics faculty of Cheikh Anta Diop's University and Researcher at CRES. Mamadou was selected in Regional program in economics in Francophone Africa countries (PTCI) which is program that trains future economists and Researchers in french speaking countries. Mamadou s research field is "the impact of ICT and innovation on economic growth and poverty in Subsaharan Africa countries". His Phd Topic is to study the determinant of ICT access and usage in Africa: Digital poverty analysis with micro data. Njoku Ola Ama, Ph.D, Professor of Statistics at University of Botswana Mark Iheadigwu, Senior Manager, Central Bank of Nigeria Mark has worked in the Central Bank of Nigeria since 1990 from where he went to the United Kingdom to carry out his PhD research in Development Studies at London South Bank University. He is currently a Senior Manager in the Bank and his research focused on the effects of microfinance policies of the Central Bank on poverty reduction in Nigeria. His research interests/experiences are currently on financial inclusion, microfinance and poverty reduction. His research is currently focused on Nigeria with applicable experiences in other developing countries contexts. He uses mixed methods which include certain aspects of randomized control trials. 6

7 Mercyline Kamande, Ph.D, Lecturer at School of Finance and Banking, Rwanda Dr. Kamande holds a Ph.D (Economics) from the University of Dares Salaam, Tanzania. She has background knowledge in several research methodologies including enonometrics, CGE modeling and randomized trials from various workshops. She is currently a lecturer at the School of Finance and Banking, Rwanda teaching economics and international business. Her research and consultancy areas are on environment and climate change issues. These include energy efficiency, proactive environmental policy issues and clean production. She has written various conference papers on clean production and firms performance which have been presented in several international conferences. She has participated in several collaborative projects in the areas of biofuels, food security, carbon trading and climate change. Benjamin Fomba Kamga, Ph.D., Lecturer Department of Quantitative Methods, School of Economics and Management, University of Yaoundé II, Cameroon Joséphat Mboya Kiweu, Senior Lecturer in Commerce, Strathmore University, Kenya Dr. Joséphat Mboya has an MBA (finance) from the University of Nairobi (1992) in Kenya and a PhD in Finance from the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) in South Africa. Joséphat has an extensive experience in a career spanning over 20 years having previous work experience: as a Financial Management Professional and or a Consultant, formerly as corporate (strategic) financial planning manager at General motors, having done Microfinance development-consulting and research over the same period. He also holds a bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting (BCom-Accounting) from the University of Nairobi (1989) and is member of the Kenya Institute of Management since Josephat has developed a Microfinance degree program and undertaken numerous assignments both in training and advisory as a microfinance expert in financial services, management and analysis including credit rating. He is an active researcher in Microfinance and financial sector development. Ezera Madzivanyika, Graduate Student in Economics at the University of Zimbabwe, Senior Researcher and Development Officer at Customs and Taxation Administration (ZIMRA), Zimbabwe Ezera is currently studying for a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics at the University of Zimbabwe. Ezera s research interest is mainly in Development Economics and Public Finance. He is responsible for providing policy advice to National Treasury in Zimbabwe. To add impetus to my research skills, he recently undertook research courses on Advanced Development Economics and Research Methodology with the International Research School in Ghana. He is also a holder of the following qualifications:- Master Of Science Degree in Economics, Bsc (Hons) 7

8 Economics Degree, Higher Diploma in Banking and Finance, Diploma in Public Relations and Diploma in Human Resources. Beatrice Kalinda Mkenda, Ph.D, Senior Lecturer in Economist at University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Beatrice has a PhD in Economics from Göteborg University, Sweden. She is a Senior Lecturer in the Economics Department at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). She teaches International Economics and Intermediate Macroeconomics at undergraduate level, and Advanced Macroeconomics at postgraduate level. She is also one of the tutors on the Diploma course in Poverty Analysis that is jointly offered by the ISS (Erasmus University, Rotterdam), REPOA, and the ESRF. Her research interests lie in International Economics, Macroeconomics, and Development Economics, with a focus on poverty analysis, globalization issues, and microfinance. Her recent research work has been with the International Growth Centre, where she has jointly authored a paper with Bjorn Van Campenhout (Estimating Transaction Costs in Tanzanian Supply Chains). She is currently working on another paper on Transportation Costs, Food Markets, and Structural Transformation in Tanzania with Christopher Adam, David Bevan and Douglas Gollin. Suleiman Namara, Senior Social Protection Specialist, World Bank, Ph.D Student at University of Makerere, Uganda Lydia Ndiragu, Ph.D, Researcher at Kenya School of Monetary Studies Dr. Ndiragu holds a PhD in social sciences (development economics), MSc. Degree in agricultural economics and BSc. Degree in agriculture. She is currently working as a researcher at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies, Central Bank of Kenya. Her current research focus is on financial inclusion and vulnerability of financial markets. Ali Ndiwalana, Research Lead at the Mobile Financial Services Incubator at Grameen Foundation s AppLab, Uganda, Graduate Student in Information Systems, Mid Sweden University Ali is currently the Research Lead at Grameen Foundation s AppLab in Uganda, in this role he is responsible for managing different stages of the research process for the Incubator from initial design to data collection and dissemination. Previously he had worked as part of a team that helped set up the Directorate for ICT Support (DICTS) at Makerere University to oversee the integration of information and communication technologies into the learning and administrative processes of the University. His research interests are in ICT and its usages in various African countries with a special focus on mobiles and small businesses. He has a 8

9 masters in Computer Science from Virginia Tech and is pursuing his PhD in Information Systems from Mid Sweden University. Lilian Ollows, Lecturer at Strathmore University, Ph.D Student at University of Pretoria, South Africa Lilian Ollows is a lecturer at Strathmore University where she has taught Finance courses for the last 10 years. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Business Administration, both specialising in finance, from the University of Nairobi. She is enrolled in the Doctor of Business Administration programme at the Gordon Institute of Business Science of the University of Pretoria, South Africa and is currently in the thesis stage. Her research interests include Personal Financial Management with a special interest in helping people understand how they can save and achieve their financial goals, Relationship Lending and Small and Medium Enterprise Financing. Tonny Kerage Omwansa, Lecturer and Ph.D Student, University of Nairobi, Kenya Tonny is a lecturer at the University of Nairobi and enrolled as a PhD candidate in ICT4D. Prior to this appointment, he was an assistant lecturer at Strathmore University. He also worked at Wichita State University in Kansas, USA as a research assistant during his graduate studies. He specializes in Information Systems and Information Technology for Development (ICT4D). His research interests are in design and implementation of low-cost technologies for developing countries, with particular emphasis on mobile applications and their socioeconomic impacts. He is wrapping up a book on M-PESA, funded by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. Francis Nathan Okurut, Ph.D, Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Botswana Dr. Okurut is a development economist and currently a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics, University of Botswana. His research interests include: poverty, microfinance, microsavings, micro-health insurance, labour markets, and economics of education. Dr Okurut has the requisite econometric skills for analysis of time series data (using E-Views software) and cross-sectional survey data (using STATA software). Tolulope Olayemi Oyekale, Ph.D, Fellow at Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research, Nigeria Tolulope obtained B Agric from University of Agriculture Abeokuta (UNAAB), Nigeria and a M.Sc and PhD from University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria. Tolulope is currently a research fellow in 9

10 the Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research with research interests that include welfare economics (food security, credit and poverty) Martin Phangaphanga, Graduate Student in Economics at the University of Cape Town, South Africa Martin is a graduate student at the University of Cape Town. He received his MA from University of Malawi and later taught Economics at the same University. He is interested in the analysis of poverty and income distribution and development policy. His current research focuses on impacts of migrants' remittances on household welfare in rural South Africa. Henry Telli, Ph.D, In-Country Economist for the Ghana Country Programme, International Growth Centre Henry holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Nottingham, UK. His thesis focused on aspects of labour economics, public policy and political economy. Currently he is more interested in and working on developmental issues broadly, but focusing more on access to banking and financial products in Ghana as well as prices and market efficiency in Ghana. Dr. Telli has done some work on development dynamics and international migration to the UK; immigration and the European welfare state; and the determinants of European attitudes towards immigration. He is based in Ghana and before joining the IGC, he worked briefly as a Lecturer at the Nottingham Trent International College, UK. Bruno Yawe, Ph.D, Senior Lecturer in School of Economics in College of Business, Makerere University, Uganda Bruno L. Yawe is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Economics in the College of Business and Management Sciences, Makerere University. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Economics) Degree of Makerere University, Master of Arts (Economics) and Doctor of Philosophy (Economics) Degrees of the University of Dar es Salaam. His research interests include amongst others mobile money technologies; climate change economics and performance measurement (efficiency, equity, quality, effectiveness) in health care and education. 10
