2 Your Life Is Changing, But Your Coverage Doesn t Have To If you change jobs or terminate your employment, the last thing you should have to worry about is your group life insurance coverage. You need to know that you can take your coverage with you, assuring your family will be protected regardless of your employment status. Now, thanks to Group Life Portability coverage from The Hartford 1, you can get that protection. How It Works The Portability option allows terminating employees to continue their life insurance coverage under a separate group policy. This means you can take your coverage with you at a reasonable group rate when you leave your job. You may elect Portability coverage equal to 100%, 75%, or 50% of your life insurance amount being terminated, subject to a maximum of $250,000. The amount you choose will be reduced by 75% (to 25% of the original amount) at age 65, but will never be less than $5,000. You must elect Portability coverage within 31 days of the termination of your group life coverage. You ll then receive a new group life insurance certificate explaining your benefit provisions, which will be similar, although not necessarily identical, to your active life coverage. Quarterly bills for Portability coverage will be sent to your home address.
3 Note: As an alternative to choosing the Portability option, you may also be able to convert your group life coverage to an individual policy through The Hartford s Group Life Conversion Privilege. If your group life plan includes spouse coverage, your spouse may also convert coverage. The amount you and your spouse can convert depends on the reason your coverage is terminating. Eligibility When group life plans offer the Portability option, Portability coverage is available to employees when their employment terminates as long as they are not entering active military service, the policy remains in force and they have not reached retirement age, as defined in the most recent amendments to the U.S. Social Security Act (age 65 or later, based on a graded scale). Check with your employer regarding which specific group life coverage that includes the Portability option. If your life plan contains a Portability provision for spouse and dependent(s), you may also be able to elect Portability coverage for them, as long as they re insured under your current group life coverage and not entering active military service. Spouse coverage and dependent child coverage are subject to maximums of $50,000 and $10,000, respectively.
4 You don t have to elect to continue coverage under the provision in order for your spouse to do so. However, you or your spouse must elect Portability coverage to continue coverage for your dependent child(ren). Term of Coverage You and your spouse can continue Portability coverage until age 75, provided your premiums are paid. At age 75, you and your spouse can convert this coverage to individual life insurance policies. Dependent child coverage can be continued under the Portability provision until age 19 (age 25 if the child is a full-time student). Note: Portability coverage will terminate if you or your dependents enter active, full-time military duty, except for training for a period of two months or less.
