FOREWORD In 2010, we developed the policy set out in the new 'Roadmap to Excellence' strategic policy plan ( ) further, around two strategic themes: Energy and Healthy Ageing. In addition, the themes of Entrepreneurship and Excellence remain university-wide spearheads. 2 There was a wide-ranging discussion in 2010 about the core values of the university. Our starting points were the previously formulated values: individual development, respect and active tolerance, entrepreneurship and responsibility. The essence of these values is contained in the new slogan Share your talent. Move the world. This slogan makes it clear that students and staff of the university want to use their talent to give something back to society. Education is not just about obtaining a qualification just as in applied research, it is about the impact it has: knowledge sharing, innovation and the implementation of ideas that set the world in motion. This idea of added value in society is increasingly becoming the touchstone of our research and education activities. Applied research and education at Hanze University Groningen are aimed at helping to strengthen the northern economy. In 2010, the university conducted research that was partly financed by grants through schemes like RAAK (over 6 million euros), Kompas and Koers Noord (over 8.5 million euros), and EDGAR Energy Gas Delta Research (over 1 million euros). Most of the research was carried out in the university s six centres of applied research and innovation. With a grant totalling 2.4 million euros, the national Sirus programme enabled us to develop university-wide excellence 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

programmes in education and research. An official moment was the presentation of our Honours College, at the start of the academic year, on 1 September Just like four years ago, in 2010 a celebratory Prince Claus Concert was held, in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix. On this occasion, the university announced the commencement of the Music Master from 1 September 2011, in spite of the fact that the Ministry of Education and Science is not funding this master s degree. Also in 2010, Hanze University Groningen had more students and staff than the previous year. A rise in numbers does not automatically mean an increase in quality in education and research. Our ambition is focused on quality, as expressed in our Roadmap to Excellence multi-year plan. Many people within the university are investing their energy, dedication and talent into this ambition. The Executive Board sincerely thanks everybody for their efforts. Only by working together can we prove that our core value is Share your talent. Move the world. 3 Groningen, June 2011 On behalf of the Executive Board, drs. Henk J. Pijlman, chair Hanze University Groningen is partner in City of Talent 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

STRATEGIC THEMES In 2010, Hanze University Groningen, University of Applied Sciences, named Energy and Healthy Ageing as its most important themes. These tie in with the region s strategic choice. The university is working closely with businesses, government authorities and (knowledge) institutes in the North Netherlands on these subjects. In addition, in its education and applied research, Hanze University Groningen is strongly focused on entrepreneurship. Our aim is to bring knowledge among businesses and employees in the North Netherlands up to a high standard, and to keep it that way. For this reason, the development of talent is being given more and more attention. Energy keeps our society going. The traditional energy sources are slowly but surely running out. Therefore, we have to look for new sustainable solutions. Hanze University Groningen wants to search for some of the answers to these questions and, of course, educate the energy professionals of the future. Energy Valley is the umbrella term for all the different parties in the north working on energy-related innovation and development. Within this extremely broad theme, Hanze University Groningen has chosen to focus on the consumer, under the motto People in Power. Healthy Ageing is the challenge for the near future. How can we stay healthier for longer? How can we organise society so that everyone gets the care that he or she needs? It is extremely important to answer these questions in our ageing society. More and more people need care and fewer 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

and fewer people are available to provide that care. The university has chosen Healthy Lifestyle as its special area for attention. Hanze University Groningen is a partner in the North Netherlands Healthy Ageing Network (HANNN). We are providing programme leaders for the Healthy Lifestyle and Food & Nutrition themes. Talent is something you have to develop. In 2009, Hanze University Groningen became the first Dutch university of applied sciences to take part in the national Sirius programme, which focuses on excellence. The objective of this programme is for 5 to 10 percent of students to be taking part in selected programmes for excellent students in Hanze University Groningen has chosen to focus on talent because it promotes an ambitious overall study culture at the same time. Ultimately every student will benefit from this. 5 Entrepreneurship brings in new knowledge to create added economic and social value in society. For Hanze University Groningen, developing and supporting both an entrepreneurial attitude among students and the route to independent entrepreneurship are important tasks. Lifelong Learning (LLL) has a specific objective: that employees (and therefore also their employers) continuously have the competences they need to be able to operate effectively. The basis for Lifelong Learning is to make education more flexible, so that adult learners can take separate modules. Partnership and co-makership are important starting points. 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

Music can bring people out of themselves In England it is happening already: classically trained musicians are playing for elderly people with dementia. Sometimes, than suddenly the sun breaks through again. People react, want to join in, and start conducting. Or they silently but noticeably enjoy the music and also that is special and valuable. Music speaks to people with such immediacy that it can draw people with dementia out of themselves. Carers are sometimes amazed by this. 8 The Lifelong Learning in Music & the Arts professorship is conducting research into this wonderful English example. The aim is to do this in the Netherlands as well, but a great many things need to be worked out first. This is the only way for us to learn enough about the conditions that can make this successful in practice. What competences do the musicians and carers need to have? For what kind of people with dementia is this suitable? How do you organise it? How do you get the funding for it? At the same time, in the North Netherlands, two modest projects are currently already underway: music workshops for the elderly and music lessons for the elderly. The workshops are centred around making music together, creating something together and implementing it. This is often done with children and young people, but rarely with elderly people. All of which are reasons to try and see how it can be developed with the new target group and what it 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

delivers. The project is being conducted in various homes for the elderly, day centres and community centres. In addition, it was also expected that the growing group of healthy pensioners are making music more often. And for them to learn how to play an instrument, or improve their playing. Ultimately, to master the piano sonatas. The same applies here: much is known about teaching music to children, but almost nothing is known about teaching it to elderly people. What repertoire is suitable? How do you deal with the limitations that come with age, for example worse hand-eye coordination? And on the other side: how do you make good use of the special motivation and experience of this category of pupils? This is currently being researched, so that afterwards music teachers will be able to rely on the knowledge obtained. 9 University lecturer Evert Bisschop Boele says: A musician is the conduit for what music can do for people. Ageing is a development with major consequences for society and musicians have something to offer in relation to that issue. They can play a social role within the framework of Healthy Ageing. This has added value for society and added value for the musicians themselves. 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

How sustainable is green gas? Green gas is popular. Many agricultural companies would like to install a biomass digester, because it will enable them to produce gas from cheap raw materials or waste. From manure, KGW or maize. Free energy and a sustainable image into the bargain! But it s not as simple as that, because generating green gas also requires energy and money. 10 How sustainable is green gas, in actual fact? How much energy does it save, and how much less CO2 is emitted? We still know relatively little about this. Businesses are crying out for this knowledge, because they are keen to find out how they can get the maximum return on their digester. The government is also interested, because with that information it can make a better assessment as to whether and how it wants to subsidise green gas. In the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation - Energy, lecturer Jan Bekkering is working on the answers to these questions. He is a mechanical engineer, doing PhD research into green gas. Bekkering is working on putting the whole production chain into a model: the biomass, the transport, the fermentation, the reprocessing and incorporation into the natural gas network. If you track all of this systematically, you get an insight into how to approach the production of green gas, to ensure that it is both sustainable and profitable. 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

Bekkering gives an example. Transport is an element that is often not factored in by businesses. But it actually matters a great deal. Supposing part of the biomass has to be supplied in lorries. That doesn t just cost money, it also burns fossil fuel therefore compromising sustainability plus you may face protests from the surrounding community. Further questions that Bekkering is seeking answers to include how to deal with seasonal influences (in summer the demand for gas is much lower), and the question of taking a regional approach. There could be a reprocessing plant where the green gas from all the digesters in the local environment is upgraded to natural gas quality. That would not be a bad idea in the North Netherlands, which, after all, profiles itself as Energy Valley. 11 Lecturer Jan Bekkering is finding that his PhD research work is not just providing relevant knowledge, but is also benefiting his teaching. Through this research and my contact with businesses, I can offer more than book learning in my lectures. With my students, I contemplate what sustainability actually is. Within this, the chain approach is extremely important: at every stage you make assessments. Sustainability is not an absolute concept. 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

Healthy Ageing in practice The population is ageing. The number of elderly people is increasing and they often have one or more chronic conditions. How can a physiotherapist or a kinesitherapist help this growing category of patients to age healthily? This is the linking thread in the part-time master s degree in Physiotherapy/Kinesitherapy for People with Chronic Conditions. Healthy Ageing in practice! 12 Traditionally, physiotherapists focus on knees, ankles, hips and so on. This does not help people with chronic conditions. In addition, the older a person becomes, the greater the chances that he or she will have several conditions at the same time. This means that a physiotherapist or kinesitherapist has to acquire more knowledge, and different knowledge. This is the focus of this new master s degree, which has been created in partnership with the University of Applied Sciences Leiden. In terms of content there are contributions from, among others, the two professors who, within Hanze University Groningen s Transparent Care professorship, are engaged in research into Healthy Ageing, movement and health. We can t do much about the condition itself, says programme manager Hans van de Leur. So the question becomes: how do you deal with it? Movement and a healthy lifestyle are crucial for ageing as healthily and enjoyably as possible. However, for many 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

people this is not easy, especially if they have a chronic condition that limits them physically. The master s degree is aimed at helping patients change their lifestyle in a way that suits them and their complex problems. Where do the opportunities lie to get this person moving and above all, to keep them moving? This is the question that students of this innovative master s degree are learning how to answer. Physiotherapist Marieke van der Wolde is enthusiastic about the master s degree. She sees many patients with complex problems in her job. When people have several conditions, it becomes difficult to work in accordance with the guidelines. For example, recently I had a lady with arthrosis of the hip and heart failure. I would really like her to mobilise, but that s restricted by her heart failure. I also regularly see patients with COPD. There are clear guidelines for this, but almost every patient with COPD has another condition as well. So the question arises: how do you handle such difficult (and for me, extremely interesting) patients? I m getting a great deal out of the casuistics that we are addressing in the master s. You learn how to choose a particular approach, grounded in science, in a practical situation. From day one, this master s has improved the quality of my work and has made me enjoy my work more A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

Energy-conscious restoration A damp, draughty church. An old factory with sky-high rooms. A centuries-old house with marble floors. All very beautiful but not easy to heat! Historic buildings are often real energy guzzlers. How do you do something about it without damaging their monumental value? This is a headache for project developers, architects, contractors and installers. Students and lecturers at Hanze University Groningen are working together with businesses on clever solutions. 14 The flywheel of knowledge about looking after monuments in an energy-efficient way is being cranked up in the Energy and Restoration RAAK project. Students and lecturers are working together with dozens of SMEs on increasing and exchanging knowledge on this subject. The project is a joint initiative by the National Heritage Board, a firm of architects specialising in restoration, the Syntens SME innovation network, the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht s Monuments in Practice professorship, and Hanze University Groningen s Centre of Applied Research and Innovation for Area Development NoorderRuimte. Monuments are, by definition, unique. Fitting radiators, taking up floors, renovating doors and window frames, isolating walls these are all interventions that damage the cultural, historical and architectural value of the monument. Often forbidden, always regrettable. So how do you ensure that your monument, even in 2011, is a comfortable, energyefficient building for the purpose you want to give it? These 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

are the problems often faced by owners, businesses involved in restoration, and by the government too, as upholder of our cultural and historic heritage. In the Energy and Restoration project, the researchers first step is to examine the useful knowledge that is already available: successful examples of energy-efficient restoration and interesting solutions. They are also listing characteristics of monuments which help to determine what you should and absolutely shouldn t do in a specific case. The researchers are also looking into the financial side of things. Can an energy-efficient plan make the approach to a monument more appealing to a project developer? And a number of innovative restoration concepts for monuments are being developed, such as the box-in-box concept. Imagine this: in an immense factory building you put in a glass inner space which can be heated in an energy efficient way, and where you can accommodate offices, a museum or a restaurant. Hanze University Groningen students have already developed such a plan for a factory in Winschoten. Attractive and achievable. 15 Project leader Bate Boschma says: Practical issues faced by businesses are central in our project. Energy-efficient restoration is about finding a balance between conflicting objectives and in the meantime you work on innovations. It s tough: you have to take one small step at a time. 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

A budding entrepreneur Suppose you re looking for a reliable garage. What you do? You ask around among colleagues, neighbours, friends and family. Or you put the feelers out on the internet of course! Martine Blok, a final year student at Hanze University Groningen, and founder of the company Social Media Hulp (Social Media Help), helps SMEs to organise word-of-mouth advertising via the new media. 16 LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and other social media hold no secrets for Martine. She sees the opportunities in them, although she has not yet heard anything about them in her marketing lectures. She happens to be one of the generation that has grown up with the new media. Working on your reputation online is simply a marketing tool. You notice that it s difficult for SMEs to do. I really enjoy organising an internet presence for a company. The Small Business and Retail Management student at the School of Marketing Management is an entrepreneur through and through. The business plan for her company is her graduation project, but currently she already has more clients than she can cope with on her own. Which is why, with a few fellow students, she is working in Cube050, the incubator of Hanze University Groningen and the University of Groningen, on a more ambitious idea: a bigger company with more staff. 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

Social media are important for all companies, be they restaurants, installers or microbiology companies. Via the internet, you build up your business network. People hear about you, and when they need something at the right moment, they think of you. Martine s offer consists of four stages: first, an analysis of the company, the target groups and the strategy. Then she creates the necessary profiles for the company. Next, she sets the wheels in motion: connecting with contacts, making friends, contributing to discussion forums, and so on. The final phase is ensuring continuity. For each phase, the client can decide whether to hire Martine or do it themselves. Since her first year at the university, Martine Blok has been involved in entrepreneurial ventures. For example, she was the initiator of BusinessMatch Groningen, an association by and for students; one of the things it does is organise a student entrepreneur competition A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

Labour issues in rural areas Farming companies are under pressure. Agricultural businesses have to adapt in order to survive, by scaling up, or opening a care farm, a campsite or a manege. Does your father-in-law lend a hand? Do you take staff on and thus become an employer? Do you get help from volunteers? At this point it can become difficult. Hanze University Groningen supports farmers by exchanging knowledge about these sorts of labour issues. 18 Farmers are well organised. The biggest sectors have comprehensive websites where their members around the world can share expert knowledge. Varkensnet.nl, pootaardappelacademie.nl and melkveeacademie.nl cover topics like tackling eelworms, sustainable piggeries, animal management, grazing and many other subjects but there is not that much about being an employer and everything that goes with it. LTO Noord, the network organisation for agriculture and horticulture, asked the Centre for Applied Labour Market Research and Innovation to work with them on developing this topic. Project leader Anneloes Scholing says: Farming businesses are overwhelmingly family businesses. Everything happens around the kitchen table. That s fine of course, but when the business grows, or you diversify, it becomes problematic. That s when you come up against questions that are not so easy to solve. Here s one example. You open a farm shop and get help from volunteers. How 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3

many hours can a volunteer work for you before the tax authorities come and inform you about how this fits in with rules on employment status? And another example: your father officially retires from the business but still helps out almost every day. How do you calculate the labour costs for this help? The Centre for Applied Labour Market Research and Innovation is currently pooling relevant knowledge, information and experience with representatives from the farming industry. All the information is disclosed via a digital route planner. A farmer with a specific question is directed step-by-step by this navigation device to the information he needs. Or you can search by theme in the bookcase. And of course, new experience and up-to-date information is continuously added. In this way, this project is strengthening the knowledge network of agricultural entrepreneurs and contributing to the economic vitality of the countryside. 19 The productive collaboration between Hanze University Groningen Centre for Applied Labour Market Research and Innovation and LTO Noord has been going on for years. The project Capaciteitsmanagement in het agrarisch MKB-bedrijf ( Capacity Management in the agricultural SME ) was preceded by an earlier project and, just like the current project, was financed with a SIA-RAAK grant. The previous project was centred around employing foreign employees. For this purpose, in partnership with LTO Noord, the Centre for Applied Labour Market Research and Innovation created the website www. arbeidsmigratie.eu and keeps it up to date. 39 A6 jaarverslag UK[DRUK].indd :06:3
