1 HOMELESS ASSISTANCE INITIATIVE Isolation is believed to be the foundation of Homelessness. When we encounter most homeless individuals, they will be in dire need because of the hesitance to seek immediate assistance due to discouragement and/or embarrassment with their situation, in addition, the lack of knowledge of the resources available to assist. Our 1 st priority is to provide a meal if needed, encouragement with Agape Love, and inform the person the steps available for getting back on their feet which include the following: STEP #1- RECONNECT Although a shelter can be a secure option to street living, it should not be the 1 st option in assisting the homeless. We must aim to re-connect the individual with local family or friends who can provide a loving environment for recovery. If support is not in the local area, then inquire about out of area affiliations and assist the individual in making the connection and means of transport. STEP #2 EMERGENCY SHELTER Access the Situation for Available Resources HEAR THEIR STORY..It is imperative that we understand the situation fully to provide the correct guidance for assistance and follow through. Who: Individual (Male/Female) or Couple/Single parent families What: Domestic Violence, Pregnancy, Sub Abuse/Addictions, Disability, Runaway..etc. Where: Location based upon individual s need/request ****SEE STEP 3 FOR LIST OF SHELTERS AVAILABLE; ADDITIONAL RESOURCE ASSISTANCE LIST IS ALSO ATTACHED AT END OF DOCUMENT LATE NIGHT EMERGENCY If faced with a late hour request for assistance with no family/friend support, understand that most emergency shelters will be maxed out due to 1 st come 1 st served priority. The following two immediate options should be available: Implement Emergency Host Home Option. This will allow an individual a one night stay in the home of a pre-arranged safe house. Only recommended if homeowner is equipped for safety. Having an emergency fund established for one night motel stay would be idea to prevent anxiety in assisting. Ideally, this should be coordinated with the churches benevolence coordinator for funding reimbursement. Follow through the next day with assessing the situation for referral to available resources and assist in making the connection. HOMELESS ASSISTANCE PAGE 1

2 STEP #3- AVAILABLE SHELTERS Select appropriate resource based on assessment Assist individual with contacting the selected resources. It is imperative that the individual speak with the provider. Some questions are private/confidential in nature and only the individual should provide the information, additionally, we must encourage the individual to take ownership of their recovery.
