He will also present trends that affect and are affected by these innovations. 6 Synchronization of Global Supply Chains Day 2: 17 November :50 12:45 hr 10:50 10:55 Welcome Mr Harvey Donaldson (CHAIR) Director, TLI, Georgia Institute of Technology 10:55 11:35 Synchronization of Global Supply Chains Professor Donald Ratliff Executive Director, TLI, Georgia Institute of Technology The growth of global commerce together with the requirements for high customer service and low inventories throughout the supply chain has created a critical requirement for synchronization. In a perfectly synchronized supply chain, products would always be available to customers when and where they were required with no inventory in the supply chain except that which is in transit and no delays by products waiting on supply chain assets or supply chain assets waiting on products. Unfortunately the physics of supply chains make such perfect synchronization impossible. Therefore the focus of supply chain synchronization is on establishing processes to assure that at every synchronization point in the supply chain all requirements are provided for supply chain execution at an acceptable level of cost and service. When any of these requirements are not provided the supply chain is disrupted. As supply chains become more complex they invariably become more difficult to synchronize. Since all trends indicate that supply chains are rapidly becoming more complex, supply chain synchronization will increasingly be brought to the forefront of supply chain engineering. In this session we will illustrate and discuss some common problems associated with synchronizing supply chains, some root causes of supply chain complexity and some current and future approaches to addressing these problems. The contexts for framing this discussion will be supply chains that include ocean shipping, new car delivery supply chains and supply chains for global wine production and distribution. 11:35 12:15 Challenges of the Wine Supply Chain Professor John Bartholdi Director Research, TLI, Georgia Institute of Technology Supply chain synchronization is a special challenge for wine because wine is an agricultural product, and so it is dependent on weather, and therefore subject to variability in production. This variability is felt all down the supply chain. It faces other challenges as well. Higher end wines are almost like art, with each batch distinguished by the year of harvest, the region, the type of grape, the winery, and the winemaker. This means that the customer at each stage of the supply chain must manage inventory as if it were a one-time purchase. Furthermore, the customer along each step of the supply chain wants to taste the product before purchase, and so it is difficult to move transactions to the web. At the same time, and along many of the same supply chains, flow spirits with more consistent production and taste, such as spirits, beer, and low-end wines, all of which can be managed as commodities. Finally, the end of the supply chain is frequently complicated by archaic and confusing laws governing the distribution of alcohol.

Different algorithms are proposed to route yard cranes and prime movers and a yard control system is designed for giving instructions to different pieces of equipment. A simulation model is also constructed to verify the policies proposed by TLI-AP. The results indicate that it is beneficial to carefully plan operations at a container terminal. The industry landscape itself as a whole is changing with an increasing number of buyers outsourcing their logistics to 3PL for various reasons. The increasing competition is pushing the LSPs to innovate themselves to fulfill the buyers need. With all these changes, where is the industry going to be.
