Mary Madden, Ph.D. College of Education and Human Development University of Maine Maine Girls Collaborative Project Earn 57% of all the undergraduate degrees awarded Much less likely than men to major in computer science, physical sciences, and engineering Concentrated in fields that historically have been dominated by women education, health science, and social work, and which earn less money Source: National Center for Education Statistics, Trends in Educational Equity of Girls & Women, 2004)

In 2008, women received 18% of bachelor's degrees in Computing and Information Sciences down from a high of 37% in Computer science is the only field in which women s participation has actually decreased over time. Source: National Center for Women & Information Technology, 2008 UMaine Computer Science Enrollment 10-Year Trend Males Female UMaine Engineering Enrollment 10-Year Trend Males Female

Female Engineering Students: More parent support than peers in other disciplines. Parents hold higher expectations for values, grades and work ethics Mothers are more highly educated Girls from egalitarian families are more likely to maintain their science and math achievement than are girls whose families adhere to traditional gender roles. Source: AWE Project 2005 Achievement + Self Concept Interest

Casual Attribution whether student attributes success or failure to their own action, external factors, or chance Reflected appraisal how student believes others perceive them External and internal frames of reference compared to peers, compared to other abilities Judgments regarding one s own ability to organize and execute actions necessary to attain a specific goal Related to a specific task in a given domain Predicts academic achievement beyond ability or previous achievement Men have higher STEM self-efficacy than women Gap exists despite comparable prior accomplishments such as grades Lack of STEM self-efficacy for girls and women leads to avoidance of STEM-related courses and careers

Exists when a person internalizes stereotypes about their gender or race/ethnicity (e.g., girls are not good at math) Threat of being evaluated, judged by, treated in terms of negative stereotype can cause a person s performance on tasks associated with the stereotype is diminished. Has been shown to impact girls and women s performance on math and science related tasks) Teachers call on and allow male students to respond to questions more frequently, and interrupt male students less frequently than female students (Bailey, 1993; Hall & Sandler,1982). Teachers interact with, reprimand, and critique male students more than female students. Teachers may be protecting female students by not challenging their ideas or critiquing their work, leaving female students less-prepared for course exams or demanding assignments (Jones & Dindia, 2004). Teachers are generally more accepting of male dominance than female dominance in the classroom (Jones & Dindia, 2004).

National Center for Education Research: Institute of Education Science 2007 Teach students that abilities are expandable and improvable Students who view intelligence as fixed: tend to be more concerned with showing their intelligence & prefer to do tasks that show they are smart Become anxious when a task is challenging and downgrade their ability Give up if a task is too challenging Students who view intelligence as expandable are more likely to: be concerned with learning new material seek to master difficult materials

Identify gains in strategy use Praise efforts Identify gaps or errors in problemsolving Shown to: Enhances belief about ability, which is related to math and science choices related to math and science choices Improves persistence Improves performance Expose girls to female role models that have succeeded in mathematics and science.

Web sites that are girl friendly Web-based discussions with women in STEM careers (Zoey s Room) High schools girls that have succeeded Presentations ti by or opportunities to work with women in college STEM studies Create a classroom environment that sparks initial curiosity and fosters longterm interest in math and science When students are interested in mathematics and science, they tend to: get better grades in mathematics and science, take more advanced mathematics and science courses, and pursue mathematics- and science-related college majors.

Ensure content is interesting to both girls and boys. Build on situational curiosity. Embed science and math in real life contexts. Connect math and science to careers. Illustrate how careers in STEM fields can help people. Utilize web-based resources that target girls. Use project based learning and group work. Many benefits to small group work However, small group work can reinforce stereotypes Girls are the secretaries Girls do the work boys get the credit Girls put forth ideas, boys ignore until a male peer states the idea Girls are there for gender balance not contributions Boys handle the materials and girls watch Needs to be carefully planned and assessed Do textbooks show females as scientists, mathematicians, engineers, doctors, etc.? Watch your own language and references (e.g., use of pronoun he ) Do you call on girls as often as boys? Do you ask girls probing questions? Name and discuss stereotypes!

3 types of spatial skills Spatial perception ability to infer the orientation of an object with respect to one s own orientation Mental rotation ability to imagine the rotation of a visual stimulus Spatial visualization multi-step manipulations of spatially presented materials. May involve spatial perception and mental rotation Spatial skills are associated with performance in math and science Males outperform girls at solving problems that require spatial skills. Evidence that this difference shows up as early as 1 st grade. Spatial skills can be improved through training. Encourage girls to play with building toys (legos) (egos) Teach girls to mentally image and draw mathematics or other assignments. Require answers in both words and spatial displays
