6 On-site Programs Discovery Labs Discovery Labs with an * are appropriate for homeschool or multi-aged (6-14 years old) groups GRADES Required chaperone ratio: one chaperone per five students (1:5) - 20 students minimum/40 students maximum - 60-minute lesson Fish Diversity* Forked tails, rounded tails, pointed tails, and more! Through hands-on investigations, students will learn about the diversity of fish teeth, fins, and coloration, and how different adaptations help them survive in the sea. Creatures of the Kelp* Discover the largest and fastest growing algae in the sea-giant kelp-as well as its importance to marine organisms and humans. Students will explore animal adaptations, follow the links in a food web, and investigate the different kinds of algae found in the foods we eat. Can You Dig It? Students become marine paleontologists as they test the properties of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, compare fossil samples to present-day marine animals, and uncover the excitement involved in finding their own fossil to take home. Shark Survivor* How do sharks survive challenges of nature and those presented by humans? Students will explore shark adaptations for swimming, sensing prey, and escaping predators, and will touch a live shark to explore possible answers to these questions. Inside Fish (Grades 4-5) Discover fish inside and out! Students will explore the important role dissection plays in scientific investigation. Through external examination and internal dissection of Pacific mackerel, students will determine how fish have adapted to their marine environment. GRADES Required chaperone ratio: one chaperone per five students (1:5) - 20 students minimum/40 students maximum - 60-minute lesson Earth Rocks! And it rolls! Through a combination of hands-on activities and cutting-edge technology, students will explore the nature of earthquakes, how scientists pinpoint an earthquake s epicenter, and how engineers design earthquake-proof structures. Fish Exploration Explore what it takes to be a fish from the inside out. Through external and internal dissections, students will discover how a Pacific mackerel swims, eats, and protects itself in the vast open ocean. Squid Exploration Investigate the wild world of cephalopods, those head-foot animals in the phylum Mollusca. Students will dissect a common market squid exploring both external and internal anatomy while learning about squid adaptations and relationships to other cephalopods. Hanging by a Thread Observe the rich diversity of animals that make their home in the mussel clumps of the rocky shore. By dissecting a mussel clump, students will learn about the major invertebrate phyla in the ocean, how these animals are classified based on their unique characteristics, and how they depend on one another for survival. Inside Molluscs (Grades 4-5) Through scientific observations and squid dissection, students discover the special characteristics of the phylum Mollusca, as well as the adaptations that squid use to eat, move, and protect themselves from predators. 4 I Register online: aquarium.ucsd.edu

GRADES Required chaperone ratio: one chaperone per five students (1:5) - 20 students minimum/40 students maximum - 60-minute lesson Fish Dissection From the outside in, students will examine how fish are adapted to their marine environments. Dissection of a Pacific mackerel will provide in-depth investigation into the unique anatomy of fish. Squid Dissection Squids are not the only cephalopods lurking in the sea. Through scientific classification, students will become introduced to the relatives of squid. They will then perform an external and internal dissection of a market squid to learn the similarities and differences among the classes of cephalopods. Science of the Sea Take a virtual trip with the crew of the SEAPLEX research cruise as you learn about the physics of the sea, sampling techniques, and data generated from this exploration of the Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch.
