4 Whether it s preparing to enter the work force immediately after secondary school, or pursuing a higher level of education, our enhanced programs are designed to assist students in developing an approach to their career pathways and life goals. We ve developed these programs in order to meet the needs of students who have specific interests outside the standard high school programs and elective areas in our secondary schools. Through flexible pathways that include project-based activities, work experience, and distributed (online) learning we offer personalized, authentic learning experiences for every student.

5 Advanced Placement (AP) Program at Argyle Secondary and Handsworth Secondary Students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses get a feel for the rigors of college/university level studies within the support of a high school environment. Students taking AP courses demonstrate to post secondary admissions officers that they have sought out an educational experience that will prepare them for success at college/ university and beyond. Each AP course concludes with a college/university level exam developed and scored by post secondary faculty and experienced AP teachers. The exception to these exams is within the Studio Art stream, which requires the submission of a portfolio of their work. The AP organization charges a fee of $105.00, to be paid by the student, for each exam. Students who are successful in AP courses can potentially earn an extra 4 credits towards their transcript and may be able to enrol directly into the second year course at the post secondary institution they attend, subject to the policies of that institution. The goal of our French Immersion Program is to produce well-educated, functionally bilingual students who wish to develop a high level of proficiency in both official languages. In order to support this goal, in grades 8-10, French language instruction represents 50% of instruction and then gradually decreases to 25% for grades 11 and 12. Students are completely immersed in French language in their French Immersion classes, and French is used for all meaningful communication and instruction. Cultural awareness and understanding of the French language are increased by various socio-cultural opportunities provided by the school district in collaboration with Canadian Parents for French. These language opportunities include: Festival du film, Concours d art oratoire, Français pour l avenir, and Idélire (French author visits). In April, Grade 11 and 12 students have the option to participate in the Diplôme d études en langue française (DELF), an internationally recognized external accreditation exam to validate their skills in French. 23 Semester System at Sutherland Secondary Sutherland Secondary is the only Secondary school in the District and on the North Shore that uses the semester system in order to deliver an educational program to students. In comparison to a linear schedule, where students take their entire course load over ten months, a semester schedule breaks the year into two equal terms, allowing students to focus on a reduced number of courses that are taken daily. The semester system may be a preferred choice for students based on their learning style and educational goals. It is beneficial for students who prefer to focus on a limited number of courses. Many students find that it easier to stay organized with a fewer number of courses at one time. For students in the senior grades, the semester system provides flexibility; participation in apprenticeship programs, career exploration, or early graduation in order to pursue post secondary options are all possibilities.
