NURSE EDUCATION COMPUTERIZED ASSESSMENT APPLICATION Jane E. June John Lefave
OBJECTIVES Identify general steps in the assessment process Discuss assessment of nurse education programs as it relates to external accrediting agencies Identify the goals of the Nurse Education Computerized Assessment Application (NECCA) Provide an overview of NECCA Demonstrate NECCA Identify challenges of NECCA
OVERVIEW OF ASSESSMENT Assessment practice is based on a number of assumptions. Assess what is most important. Anything that can be taught or learned can be assessed. Assessment should be applied at course, program, and dinstitutional i i levels.
OVERVIEW OF ASSESSMENT Courses and programs should be organized around clearly articulated learning goals and objectives, explicit assessment methods, and measurable program outcomes. The assessment process should be manageable to insure that it is regular and ongoing.
OVERVIEW OF ASSESSMENT Assessment, evaluation and analyzing data for decision making are critical elements needed for external accrediting agencies.
STEPS OF THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS Step One: Define intended program outcomes. Example: What do we want our graduates to know and/or actually be able to do? Step Two: Design an evaluation tool (survey) to measure the outcomes.
STEPS OF THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS Step Three: Have students, graduates and employers complete the survey. Step Four: Measure the results of the survey including whether outcomes have been met. Step Five: Make decisions based on the results of the data collected.
TIPS ON THE CREATION OF AN ASSESSMENT TOOL When you are creating the Assessment Tool, remember and understand. Don t ask the questions unless you want an answer. When you ask the question, know you should do something with the answer. Collect the data from the questions asked. Analyze the data. Make decisions based on the data received from the questions asked.

IN THE BEGINNING.
NOW AN EASIER AND MORE STREAMLINED PROCESS
GOALS OF NECCA To provide a systematic ti structure to document and analyze the nurse education program s courses, labs and clinical rotations
GOALS OF NECCA To provide easy access to students, faculty, the department administrator and coordinators. To assure that it is secure to each group.
GOALS OF NECCA To provide the capability to store and track each program student s s demographic information, course grades, and a wide range of factors that may be correlated to predict a student s s success or failure in the program. To provide anonymity of the students, while p y y, recording completion and submission of each student component of NECCA.
GOALS OF NECCA To assure that human involvement in administering the application is minimal. To provide for analysis and reporting of data that is as simple as the selection of criteria and the click of a button. To assure that the processed information is displayed in both a graphic and numerical fashion allowing rapid visual evaluation.
GOALS OF NECCA To provide for comparisons of aggregated g year-to-year, semester-to-semester data. To display and track trends in each evaluation question as well as each complete evaluation. Establish a research committee to evaluate the results at the end of each semester. This allows informed decisions and resulting action to make program improvements.
OVERVIEW OF NECCA NECAA is a collection of online survey, analysis and reporting utilities. The information is gathered via a battery of evaluations completed by students and faculty alike. The resulting data is stored and analyzed in real-time producing a variety of reports, rich in graphical and numerical information. The application is a key component to the nursing program s systematic approach to maintaining a consistent high quality learning environment, professional in all of its aspects.
OVERVIEW OF NECCA Customized versions are in place to meet the specific needs of both the Associate degree Nurse Education and Certificate for Practical Nursing Programs. Evaluations focus on courses of study, textbooks, classroom environment, laboratory and clinical experiences. The reported results meet the evaluation standards set forth by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
OVERVIEW OF NECCA As a web based application, access to NECAA s several areas (evaluation, reporting and administration) are controlled by varied levels of security. Curriculum evaluation is conducted at the end of each semester, while clinical and laboratory evaluation schedules are set as required according to their unique schedules.
