Faculty of Business and Economics DOCTORAL REGULATIONS 1. Preamble Article 1 - Article 2 - Article 3 - Article 4 - Article 5 - Purpose Following a proposal from the Faculty of Business and Economics (HEC), the University of Lausanne awards a doctoral degree as defined in Article 38 of the Faculty of Business and Economics regulations. Goal As per Article 56 of the HEC regulations, the present regulations aim at establishing the basic principles of the University of Lausanne s Faculty of Business and Economics Doctoral Program and the conditions under which the doctoral degree may be obtained. Doctoral Program s Supervision The Faculty of Business and Economics Doctoral Program is administered by a Director chosen amongst the members of the Dean s office. The Director is elected for a one year renewable term. The Faculty Council is informed of the outcome of the election. Doctoral Program s Council The Doctoral Program s Council is made-up of the Doctoral Program s Director and of a professor for each field of study that awards a doctoral degree. The Doctoral Program s Council is presided by the Doctoral Program s Director. The members of the Doctoral Program Council are elected for a one year renewable term. Directives There is a directive for each field of study in which a doctoral degree is awarded by the University of Lausanne following a proposal from the Faculty of Business and Economics. This directive establishes the requirements for the first stage of the doctoral program as well as the eventual requirements for the second stage. The Doctoral Program s Council must approve the directives, which must then be adopted by the Faculty Council and then be passed on to the Rectorate for adoption.
Doctoral regulations - HEC - Page 2/7 2. Application and admission Article 6 - Article 7 - Article 8 - Article 9 - Article 10 - Admissions The Admissions Department of the University of Lausanne decides whether or not the candidate fulfils the formal criteria of admission for the doctorate. The student is regularly registered as a student of the University of Lausanne during the whole of his/her doctoral studies. The student pays the tuition fees as defined by the University. Registration The student is registered at the Faculty of Business and Economics for the whole of his/her doctoral studies. Admission In order to be admitted in the Doctoral Program, students must fulfil the following requirements: - fulfil the general requirements of the University; - hold a Masters of Science (MSc) from the University of Lausanne s Faculty of Business and Economics or a degree deemed equivalent by the University of Lausanne s Admissions Department; - either have a thesis supervisor or have been admitted by an ad hoc committee. Transfer credit Recognition of previous course work are delivered by the Doctoral Program s Council. When necessary, the council seeks the advice from specialists in the relevant domain. Thesis supervisor The thesis supervisor is a current professor of the Faculty of Business and Economics. In the event that the professor does not have tenure (e.g., as in the case of an assistant professor), following a proposal from the concerned department, the Director of the Doctoral Program designates a surety. The surety s role is to insure that in the event that the thesis supervisor leaves, the doctoral student may finish his/her thesis in good time and in compliance with the doctoral regulations.
Doctoral regulations - HEC - Page 3/7 The thesis may be supervised by a second professor external to faculty (co-supervision) with the consent of the Doctoral Program s Director. In this event, the Doctoral Program s Director designates a faculty professor as co-supervisor. The thesis work is done under his/her responsibility. 3. Structure of the studies Article 11 - Article 12 - Duration The regulatory duration of studies is of a minimum of six semesters and of a maximum of ten semesters. In addition to this duration, the student may have to complete a pre-doctoral foundation program (limited to a maximum of two semesters). The student who, during this period, does not fulfil all the requirements for obtaining the doctorate is automatically and definitively expelled from the Doctoral Program. Exemption Subject to the Dean s office s approval, the Doctoral Program s Council may allow exceptions to the aforementioned duration of studies by allowing for two extra semesters to a doctoral student for just cause or, for part time students, following a proposal from the department. 3.1 First stage Article 13 - Article 14 - Article 15 - Coursework The relevant doctoral directive defines the duration and content of a program of study (which may include courses, seminars, readings and projects), which allows the student to enlarge his/her knowledge. A one-semester extension of this duration may be given by the Doctoral Program Council. Examinations The Directive specifies what the requirements for the first stage are and in particular whether the doctoral student is required to pass examinations. Research plan In agreement with his/her supervisor, the doctoral candidate establishes a research plan presenting the topic of research and a tentative timetable of the planned research activities.
Doctoral regulations - HEC - Page 4/7 3.2 Second stage Article 16 - Preparation of the thesis In order to be allowed to begin working on a thesis, the doctoral candidate must have fulfilled all the requirement of the first stage as specified in the related Directive. Each year and in agreement with his/her thesis supervisor, the candidate establishes a list of objectives to be attained. The Director of the Doctoral Program is informed of the latter. Article 17 - Doctoral seminars Each year, each department organises at least one seminar during which doctoral students present their work. The supervisors attend this public seminar. Attendance is mandatory for the other doctoral students. Doctoral students are encouraged to present their work at seminars and conferences outside of the University of Lausanne s Faculty of Business and Economics. 4. Doctoral Thesis Article 18 - Article 19 - Writing The thesis may either consist of a monograph or of articles and of a summary note. The summary note presents the articles, the significance, and the research context along with the conclusions and future perspectives. The summary note must be written by the author alone. The thesis is written in French. With the supervisor s approval, the thesis may be written in one of the other official Swiss languages or in English. The Director of the Doctoral Program is informed of the latter. Committee Following the supervisor s proposal and in consultation with the relevant programme director of each field of study, the Doctoral Program Director designates the doctoral thesis committee, composed of the following members: - a professor from the Faculty of Business and Economics who presides the committee ; - the supervisor;
Doctoral regulations - HEC - Page 5/7 - at one member, who is a professor not affiliated with the Faculty of Business and Economics of the university of Lausanne. If the Doctoral Program s Director and the doctoral student s supervisor do not agree on the composition of the committee and after the supervisor requests so in writing (and as a last resort) the dean settles the dispute. Article 20 - Article 21 - Private defence The professor from the Faculty of Business and Economics and the member(s) address a written report to the Doctoral Program s Director in which they give their opinion on the thesis and whether they deem it as receivable. If they do so, then as soon as the members of the committee are available the thesis colloquium is held with the doctoral candidate. After the thesis colloquium, the committee decides whether it is passed, passed with reservations or failed. If the thesis colloquium is passed with reservations, the candidate has up to six months to make the modifications demanded by the committee. If the modifications are not made within this deadline, the thesis colloquium is considered failed. The thesis colloquium is considered passed when all the member of the committee have given their written approval. The success of the thesis colloquium involves the imprimatur, which officially gives the right to the candidate to print his/her thesis. The thesis colloquium may only be held one more time and within a six month period following the first failure. A second failure is eliminatory. Public defence The candidate presents his/her work during a public defence at the earliest three weeks after and at the latest three month after the success of the thesis colloquium. The candidate submits to the Doctoral Program s secretariat five printed copies of his/her thesis and one copy per member of the committee at least ten days before the defence. The defence is announced eight days ahead of time by public notice and by press release. The thesis committee, which on this occasion may only have one member in addition to the supervision and to the HEC professor, assists to the defence. Normally, a member of the Dean s Office, designated by the dean, presides the defence.
Doctoral regulations - HEC - Page 6/7 Article 22 - At the end of the defence, the committee deliberates and then announces whether the thesis is: - accepted; - accepted and proposed for a prize. If this is the case, the candidate is not informed of this decision. Title of Doctor The candidate is awarded the title of doctor after having fulfilled all administrative requirements which are communicated to the candidate by the administration of the Doctoral Program. In particular, the candidate must hand in an electronic copy of his/her thesis, as well as five hard copies. 5. Final provisions Article 23 - Article 24 - Article 25 - Expulsion Proposals to expel students following elimination are the Doctoral Program s jurisdiction. They are decided by the Dean s Office. Change of thesis supervisor In the event that, for accidental reasons, a doctoral student should be without a supervisor (e.g., because of retirement, death, change of university, accident...) the Doctoral Program Council forms a commission of three professors which must find a supervisor for the candidate. In the case of interpersonal disagreement or if for professional reasons, a doctoral student is without a supervisor, he or she has a year to find another supervisor. Should the student not be able to find a supervisor within this lapse of time, he or she is expelled from the program and may only return on the program if he or she finds another director. Temporary provisions Doctoral students registered in the doctoral program before the application of the new regulations are submitted to these new regulations according to the following provisions: - Students registered in the doctoral program before the end of the calendar year 2005 are exempted from the first step of the doctoral program.
Doctoral regulations - HEC - Page 7/7 Article 26 - Adoption - Students registered in the doctoral program as of the 1 st of January 2006 follow new doctoral program. Exemption may be given for all the students already registered. These exemptions are discussed between the doctoral student and the supervisor and are approved the Doctoral Program s Council. The duration of studies is of five years maximum and is subject to the exceptions considered in Article 12 of the present regulations and in Article 42 of the Faculty of Business and Economics regulations. Other provisions The regulations of the Faculty of Business and Economics apply. Adopted on the 18th of December 2006 during the Directorate s session.
