2 Exit Survey Overview Executive Summary The School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) - Office of Accreditation and Assessment administers the Exit Survey to graduating students at the University of San Diego (USD) annually. The Exit Survey affords students the opportunity to reflect on their program experiences and to provide valuable feedback utilized for program review. This report is specific to the results for the Leadership Studies, PhD Program in 2015, with 2014 and 2013 data provided for comparison purposes. Rating Scale Five different five-point rating scales were used in this survey. The goal is to have response ratings in the four to five range for each item. Strongly Agree (5), Agree (4), Neutral (3), Disagree (2), Strongly Disagree (1) Extremely Well (5), Well (4), Moderately (3), Poorly (2), Not At All (1) Very Useful (5), Useful (4), Neutral (3), Useless (2), Very Useless (1) Well Articulated (5), Articulated (4), Fairly Articulated (3), Poorly Articulated (2), Not Articulated (1) Very Satisfied (5), Satisfied (4), Neutral (3), Dissatisfied (2), Very Dissatisfied (1) Response Rate Table 1 shows the percent of USD-Leadership Studies, PhD graduating students who responded to the Exit Survey for the last three years. The three year trend ( ) in response rates are 56%, 73%, and 83% respectively. 3 Summary of Findings Graduating students were asked to rate aspects of the Leadership Studies, PhD Program in twelve areas. The 2015 Cronbach s alpha values were as follows: faculty (.95); advisors (1.0); intellectual climate (.93); program support and communication (.79); university support (.73); enhanced knowledge and skills (.96); preparation of skills (.97); usefulness of required research courses (N/A); enhanced ability to think critically (N/A); advanced research courses (N/A); dissertation (.88); and the overall program (.99), suggesting moderately high to relatively high internal consistency of survey item responses. (Note that a reliability coefficient of.70 or higher is considered acceptable in most social science research situations.) All but two of the 2015 mean ratings were in the desired four to five range (using a 5 point scale). Figure 1 shows the comparison of 2015 means, with 2014 and 2013 means. 4 Professional Experiences PhD Leadership Studies graduates were asked about their professional experiences. Figure 2 shows graduates employment information, professional involvement, and application of knowledge and skills gained. FIGURE2. You anticipate that either faculty will be too busy to really help you or take an interest in you, and that is NOT the case here. I can honestly say that I have valued my experience with every faculty member that I took a class from--and those who I did not have classes with. They are truly incredible and I felt they were completely committed to my success. The way in which they interact models how students interact with each other. Seeing that faculty are collaborative and supportive sets the tone for all other relationships. This program did not feel competitive--it felt cooperative and collaborative. 5 Factors Most Important to Overall Satisfaction with the Leadership Studies PhD Program When 2015 Leadership Studies PhD graduating students were asked which factors were most important to their overall satisfaction with the Leadership Studies PhD Program, they cited faculty, advising, safe learning environment, international research and study, and consulting practice as contributing to their overall satisfaction. Graduating students comments regarding overall satisfaction are shown in Table A13 in the Appendix. Suggestions for Improving the Leadership Studies PhD Program When 2015 Leadership Studies PhD graduating students were asked for suggestions for improving the Leadership Studies PhD Program, they listed: develop an applied quantitative research course, integrate more theories by nonprofit scholars, more opportunities to publish, a job search workshop, less courses, more research-oriented faculty, and credentialing. Graduating students comments are shown in Table A14 in the Appendix. When 2015 Leadership Studies PhD graduating students were asked to share what particular skills, areas or topics not covered - but should be in the Leadership Studies PhD Program, they listed: more research courses, more opportunities to practice quantitative research, more coverage of leadership theories, more advanced research courses, writing for scholarly publication, adult learning courses, and consulting and leadership education practicum. Graduating students comments are shown in Table A15 in the Appendix. Fulfillment of Program Goals Exit survey data from Leadership Studies PhD graduating students serve as evidence of program goal fulfillment. Provide candidates with the opportunity to develop skill sets that empower them to mobilize the forces of inclusion and diversity for the attainment of organizational objectives. Expose candidates to the application of theoretical concepts within organizational systems; and the practice of thinking critically to assess current and/or continuing problems. Encourage candidates to develop new levels of insight and self-awareness regarding their strengths and challenges as a leader.
