PURPOSE This policy describes and regulates the credentials earned by completion of a Regular Studies program at Langara College. 2. DEFINITIONS Credential: A named qualification that is awarded by Langara College upon completion of a prescribed program of study. Cumulative Grade-Point Average (CGPA): A weighted average of grades earned in courses designated as eligible for inclusion. The criteria for calculation of the CGPA are set by the Registrar. Graduation Adjudication Committee: A subcommittee of Education Council with the authority to grant exceptions to the program requirements or to the requirements of this policy. Lower-Level: Courses numbered Parchment: The physical document awarded to the recipient of a credential. Program of study: A sequence or package of courses leading to a credential. Regular studies: Courses and programs approved by Education Council and offered under the direction of a Dean of Instruction. Upper-Level: Courses numbered 3000 and above. 3. POLICY Awarded 5.1 Langara College awards the following classes of credentials following the completion of a program of study approved by Education Council and the College Board of Governors: Baccalaureate Degree (in accordance with Provincial regulations) Associate Degree Diploma Post-Graduate Certificate Certificate Citation 5.2 All Baccalaureate Degrees will have an official title that is descriptive of the discipline or general area of study, and have the style: Bachelor of [Example: Bachelor of Science in Nursing] Concentrations will appear only on the student s academic record/transcript. 5.3 Associate Degrees completed without a concentration will have the style: Associate of Arts Associate of Science 5.4 If an area of concentration 1 is completed, Associate Degrees will have a descriptive subsidiary title and have the style: 1 - Criteria for Associate Degrees are determined by the provincial government.

3 Page 3 Associate of Arts in or Associate of Science in [Examples: Associate of Arts in Canadian Studies Associate of Science in General Biology] 5.5 Diplomas, Post-Graduate Certificates, Certificates, and Citations will have the style: Diploma in or Post-Graduate Certificate in [Examples: Diploma in Applied Urban and Rural Planning Certificate in Social Service Worker Citation in Early Childhood Education] 5.6 If an area of concentration is completed, Diplomas, Post-Graduate Certificates, Certificates and Citations will have a subsidiary title that is descriptive of the discipline or general area of study and have the style: Diploma in Arts and Science (Canadian Studies) Diploma in Applied Urban and Rural Planning (Environmental Planning) 5.7 Co-operative education designations will appear only on the academic record/ transcript. Records 5.8 The official names of credentials are those set out above. The Registrar will keep a record of the official names of each credential and amend Appendix 1 as needed. Such emendation will not require approval of the College Board of Governors or Education Council. Official Credential Abbreviations 5.9 The Registrar will establish official abbreviations for each credential according to generally accepted conventions. The Registrar will ensure that Appendix 1 is amended as needed. Such emendation will not require approval of the College Board of Governors or Education Council.

Standards below these minima are not permitted.

5 Page Multiple Time Limits With the exception of Post-Graduate Certificates, a student who has qualified for a credential in one program and wishes to receive a second credential of the same type in a different program may apply credits and courses from the first credential towards the requirements of the second credential where appropriate. All required courses for the second program area must be completed. A minimum of 50% of the course work applied toward the second credential must be from courses that were not used to satisfy the requirements for the first credential. The final 40% of the course work of the second credential must be completed at Langara. Cumulative grade point average calculations will be continuous across multiple credentials but separate by level of study, undergraduate and post-graduate There are no college-wide time limits for the completion of credentials. However, Education Council may approve time limits for the completion of specific programs. Parchments 5.16 Date The date on the parchment will be the final date of the semester in which the credential is completed (30 th April, 31 st August or 31 st December). The foregoing notwithstanding, when the final requirements for the credential are completed more than 3 (three) years after the completion of 80% of the requirements, the Registrar may include a notation on the parchment to indicate that the credential is based on a curriculum from an earlier date. [Example: If all or almost all the Computer Science courses for the Diploma in Computer Studies were completed by 1995 but the last requirements for that diploma were not completed until April 2005, the parchment will show: 5.17 Signatures Diploma in Computer Studies (1995), although the parchment will be dated April 30, ] Each parchment will bear the signature of the following college officials: Chair of the Board of Governors President Registrar

6 Page Seal All parchments will bear the embossed seal of Langara College Official Name of Credential All parchments will bear the official name of the credential Replacements Parchments are issued only in their original form. Copies are not available. Replacements for lost or damaged parchments will be issued by the Registrar upon receipt of a signed and dated letter with an explanation of what happened to the original parchment. If the replacement is for a damaged parchment, the original will be returned. The Registrar will determine an appropriate fee for this service. Date of Conferral of 5.21 The credential is deemed to be earned on the final date of the semester in which all requirements for the credential are completed - as confirmed by the Registrar. Once confirmed, the credential appears on the official transcript as completed. 6. GUIDELINES/STANDARDS Not applicable. 7. EXCEPTIONS Case-by-Case Exceptions 7.1 Exceptions are granted only in extraordinary circumstances and on a case-by-case basis. Requests for exceptions to the Graduation Adjudication Committee will be made in writing and submitted to the Registrar. Exceptions for Specific Programs or 7.2 Education Council may approve exceptions to this policy for specific programs or credentials where deemed to be of merit. Upon approval, such exceptions will be published in Appendix 2 of this Policy.

7 Page 7 8. PROCEDURES Approval of New 8.1 The Act gives authority for awarding credentials and determining the criteria for those credentials to the College Board of Governors. The Act also requires Education Council to advise the Board of Governors on the criteria, and the Board of Governors must seek that advice. Graduation 8.2 Application are not awarded automatically. Students are required to make application to graduate and receive a credential. The Registrar will determine the appropriate form of application and ensure that students are adequately informed of the process. 8.3 Exceptions to Established Programs of Study Students who seek a variation in the approved program of study are required to make a written request to the Graduation Adjudication Committee. The Registrar will establish the process for such a request. 9. RESPONSIBILITY For further information regarding this policy, contact the Deans of Instruction. 10. 12 Page 12 Appendix 3 Criteria for Graduation with Distinction Students who achieve an overall grade point average of 3.67 or greater in the final sixty credits of a degree program, the final thirty credits of an associate degree or diploma program, or the final fifteen credits of a certificate program are eligible to graduate with distinction.
