4 Courses Outlines STAGE 1 IT5101 Communication Studies Introduces you to the theories, principles and practical skills associated with effective intrapersonal, interpersonal, oral and written modes of communication. Also covers cultural identities within New Zealand society. IT5104 Programming Introduces you to the fundamentals of programming skills and provides experience in developing and maintaining applications in a commonly used programming language. You will also develop application programmes using quality assurance procedures. Software Planned: C++ IT5105 Mathematics for Information Technology Covers the concepts of discrete mathematics, which are fundamental to information systems. It provides practice in the basic probability and statistical principles needed in an information technology environment using statistical software packages. IT5108 Computer Systems Architecture Covers the underlying principles of computer system structure and operation from both hardware and software perspectives. Aims to provide you with practical experience in programming computer system components and the operating system. Software Planned: NT and Linux IT5109 IT Essentials Covers the troubleshooting and maintenance of microcomputer hardware, software and peripherals. Introduces you to the fundamentals and basic concepts of computer networks. IT5111 Fundamentals of IT Aims to develop a broad knowledge base in industry and business concepts and principles, and relate these to the information technology industry. You will complete a case study on a particular industry, organisation and business function and be introduced to the issues and controversies that comprise the relatively new field of cyber ethics. You will also develop introductory practical and theoretical skills in systems analysis and design and elementary data modelling techniques and have the ability to perform some common database related tasks. IT5112 Fundamentals of Software Development and Design Introduces you to software development concepts and programming. Software Planned: VB.Net IT5114 Networking Fundamentals (Network+) Introduces you to the features and functions of networking components and develops the knowledge and skills needed to install, configure and troubleshoot basic networking hardware, protocols and servers. STAGE 2 IT6201 Communication Studies Course covers theories related to group dynamics, team building, conflict management and interpersonal relationships including those derived from social psychology, sociology and communication studies. You will develop self-awareness and interpersonal skills and be able to apply them to specific situations. You will also consider theories of investigation and research methodologies and apply scientific research principles to a topic of interest. Prerequisite: IT5101

5 IT6203 Software Development II (C++) Aims to familiarise you with a new language and introduce you to further software development methods. You will also gain experience in using prototyping techniques during the development of software applications. Software Planned: C++ Builder Prerequisites: IT5104 and IT5112 Recommended prerequisite: IT5105 IT6206 Database Design and Implementation Gain a good understanding of database design. Learn how to produce data models and implement database management systems. It also provides you with a thorough understanding of the features of Structured Query Language. Software Planned: Access and Oracle Prerequisite: IT5111 Recommended prerequisite: IT5105 IT6209 Systems Analysis and Design Learn how to apply structure systems analysis techniques, produce and present well designed inputs and outputs, systems design documentation and apply object oriented analysis techniques. Prerequisites: IT5105 and IT5111 IT6210 Programming II You will be introduced to a new language and gain experience in using prototyping techniques during the development of software applications. Software Planned: Java Prerequisites: IT5104 and IT5112 IT6211 E Commerce Website Develop foundational knowledge and skills in electronic e-commerce website construction that allows you to identify and distinguish business issues involved with e-commerce, install, configure and administer a web server used in e-commerce, develop SQL DDL and DML for a template database supporting e-commerce and design and implement an e-commerce website using server-side and client-side components. Prerequisite: IT5111 IT6212 Website Scripting Foundation Develop foundational knowledge and skills in scripting for website construction that allows you to undertake the process of solving simple programming tasks through logic methods, problem decomposition and translation in a scripting (programming) language, gain a thorough knowledge of a selected scripting (programming) language and its practical application and write scripted programmes to solve commercial processing problems. Prerequisite: IT5112 IT6213 Website Media Develop knowledge and skills in website media development. Course content includes principles of graphics design in the design of websites, the enhancement of World Wide Web and Intranet sites using multimedia and the design and development of multimedia based material for production on CD-ROM and websites. Prerequisite: IT5111

6 IT6214 Open Source Software Provides you with the knowledge and principles required for evaluating, designing, installing and integrating open source software and operating systems in a mixed network environment. Provides the expertise required for the configuration and maintenance of open source operating systems and applications. Prerequisites: IT5108 and IT5114 IT6215 Networking Technology Introduces you to network components, network protocols and design, installation, configuration, maintenance and management principles. Also covers the installation, configuration and operation of LAN, VLAN and WAN services for networks, the deployment of various routed and routing protocols and the development and application of access policies. Prerequisite: IT5114 Recommended prerequisite: IT5108 IT6216 Computer Forensics Aims to provide you with practical skills and a comprehensive understanding of computer forensic tools and techniques. You will learn about evidentiary practices and procedures to enable forensic findings to be admissible in law. Prerequisite: IT5108 or IT5109 IT6217 IT Service Management Covers IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) standards and business practices in IT Service Level Management and Service Continuity Management. This course will prepare you to undertake industry certification examinations in IT Service Management. IT6218 Project Management Understand the requirements of project planning and control and use project management software to manage tasks. Gain the skills to perform technical and financial evaluations of proposed systems at the feasibility stage. Software Planned: MS Project Recommended prerequisite: IT5101 STAGE 3 IT7301 Project Provides you with the opportunity to research, select, integrate and apply a range of techniques and technology to solve a workplace problem. Prerequisites: IT6201, IT6218 and IT6209 IT7302 Software Development Develop expertise in a particular computer language and make use of appropriate software development methods. Software Planned: Java Prerequisite: IT6210

7 IT7305 Intelligent Hybrid Systems Enables you to evaluate and apply commonly used methodologies to the field of intelligent technologies and to understand fundamental issues associated with building intelligent hybrid systems, problem solving and software modelling. It also provides training in a powerful, internationally recognised, Neural Networks application/development software (NeuralWorks Professional II Plus) and a Genetic Algorithms software package (Soft Computing Genetic Tool). Successful students may gain a NeuralWare USA Authorised Training Certificate (similar to Microsoft Certifications). This course is designed to extend your knowledge of systems analysis design and control for complex systems industry, business and many other social-economic activities. Software Planned: NeuralWorks Professional II Plus and Soft Computing Genetic Tool Prerequisite: IT5105 IT7306 Information Systems in Management Gain an understanding of how information systems provide solutions to organisational problems and challenges. Understand the importance of plans and strategies relating to the management of the information systems function and the nature and role of management support systems as aids in management decision-making, with particular emphasis given to decision support systems. Prerequisite: IT6209 Recommended prerequisites: IT6218 and IT6206 IT7308 Human Computer Interaction Introduces you to the principles of Human-Computer Interaction in relation to the design and implementation of components and systems. This course provides experience of different application development tools in the design, implementation and documentation of reusable components in graphical user interfaces. Prerequisite: IT5112 Recommended prerequisites: IT6203, IT6210 and IT6212 IT7309 Data Models and Databases Provides practical experience in the modelling and implementation of the developed models in a database environment. Investigates the issues involved in the management, administration, security and system performance of database management systems. You will apply data modelling techniques to a complex system and extend your experience of fourth generation languages. Prerequisite: IT6206 IT7315 Information Security Provides an overview of the field of information assurance and security. This course will expose you to a broad range of security activities, methods, methodologies and procedures. Includes inspection and protection of information assets, detection of and reaction to threats to information assets, the examination of pre and post-incident procedures, technical and managerial responses and an overview of the information security planning and staffing functions. Prerequisites: IT5109 or IT511417
