Red Wing s Downtown Main Street, Inc. and the Red Wing Port Authority are partnering up to present foodies alike with a restaurant challenge. Restaurant challenges are somewhat a new concept. Nationally, communities have created similar types of challenges with creative incentive packages to attract new businesses. Red Wing has a need, more restaurants. And to address this need, a Red Wing Restaurant Challenge. Those selected will receive a cash and an incentive package valued at up to $40,000. Why a Restaurant Challenge? The need for new restaurants in Red Wing has been determined by a recent market study. The study found Red Wing is lacking the presence of restaurants by underserving the community by 30 percent. The Red Wing Restaurant Challenge is providing up to three new restaurants with everything they need to be successful their first year in Red Wing including marketing, business support, legal services, accounting support, merchant support and more. Can just anyone apply? Those with a restaurant entrepreneurial spirit are encouraged to apply. The only prerequisite is a love of food and to help Red Wing open tasty restaurants. Red Wing not only has a retail trade of more than 100,000 people, it has a steady stream of traffic going through the heart of downtown. And with Red Wing Shoe headquartered in the downtown district, the city offers many travelers looking for places to entertain and dine. Red Wing also has the Mississippi River, beautiful bluffs, history and charm, but it has a lack of flavor, a flavor we would all like to taste. Isn t there a big turnover of restaurants in the Red Wing area? Yes, there has been a lot of turnover in restaurants in Red Wing, which is why a challenge of this sort is perfect for our community. And this turnover is not due to the market. There are five historic downtown locations in which to choose from; the

The incentive package was created through support of the community and local businesses. The winners will each receive a hefty incentive package valued at up to $40,000. What is the desired outcome of the challenge? It s simple, the opening of up to three successful restaurants in Red Wing. For the winners, a new business adventure. For the community, more choice in restaurant options. For local businesses, increased foot traffic. What is Downtown Main Street (DTMS) and the Port Authority? DTMS is a non- profit association of 200 individuals, businesses and community organizations interested in the protection, preservation and development of the Red Wing downtown district. The Port Authority is a public agency and serves as the city of Red Wing s economic development agency.
