17 Preface Recent events have increased the awareness for the need for disaster recovery planning. It must be recognized that building a suitable IT infrastructure is only one part of this process. As well as making sure that a company s data is secured and that access to it is maintained or easily resumed, a Disaster Recovery Plan must also look at such factors as where will employees work? How will key employees travel to the disaster recovery site if required to do so? How often should the plan be tested? After the disaster how will normal service be resumed when the main production site is back in operation? In this age of distributed computing, how will the data on departmental servers be secured and access to it maintained? A comprehensive Disaster Recovery Plan will cover all these factors and more. While we recognize all the elements that are required for a total recovery plan, this book concentrates on the IT infrastructure.the first part of this redbook discusses the principles and concepts that need to be understood when making a Disaster Recovery Plan. In the second part we look at the complete range of IBM TotalStorage products and where and how they can be used in the IT infrastructure with reference to disaster recovery planning. In the third part we discuss some customer scenarios and how the different features and functions of the IBM TotalStorage products are utilized to meet the customer s business objectives of the Disaster Recovery Plan.
