SUPERVISORS AND ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF LISTING Postdoctoral Residency Program Kaiser Permanente Northern California South Bay Consortium 2013/2014 Training Year Training Program Administrators Andrew Berger, Ph.D I received my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley and my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Los Angeles. I have a special interest in the graduate level training of post-doc residents. A significant portion of my time is spent as Training Director of the South Bay Consortium. My clinical interests include teen and child family issues, depression and anxiety, in addition to difficulties coping with life changes, such as divorce and blended families. I tend to see child and teen mental health issues from a family perspective, as it is difficult to separate a particular problem from the social environment. Although I see working with the family as key to addressing many mental health issues, there are times when an issue requires individual treatment and believe short-term problem-focused therapy can be very effective. I am also a member of our urgent on-call team, and do Emergency Department 5150 evaluations and Hospital Consults. I have supervised post-docs for over 10 years. I see supervision as more directive at the beginning and then becoming more collaborative as the year progresses, to help post-docs develop their own style and independent functioning, in preparation for licensed practice. I tend to conceptualize cases more dynamically but my interventions are more consistent with CBT, Family Systems and Integrative therapy. I find that supervising keeps me up to date on the more recent developments in clinical psychology, as I learn so much from our SBC residents. I really enjoy the collaborative approach to the supervision relationship. Marcus Green, Ph.D I received my PhD in clinical psychology at Brigham Young University, where my studies emphasized child and adolescent treatment. I completed an internship at Spokane Mental Health in the Department of Child and Family Services in 2009, and completed a post-doctoral residency at Kaiser Permanente in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department in 2011 at the San Jose Medical Center. Although I enjoy treating a wide variety of disorders, my special interests include behavior problems for children and teens of all ages, ADHD, and issues related to depression and anxiety. I believe that treatment is most effective when it is the result of the collaborative efforts of therapists, parents, extended family, school, and community resources working together to help a child or teen and believe in using evidence-based approaches to treatment that are well researched.

I am currently a primary supervisor and co-training director for the post-doctoral residency program in the South Bay Consortium. I have found that I enjoy the energy and new perspectives that residents bring to our program. My goal is that each resident feel comfortable working independently by the end of their residency. Kathleen Friedland, Ph.D I received my Ph.D. in psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology-Fresno (now Alliant). After receiving my license in 1991, I worked at the Family Service Center in Fresno as Coordinator of the Accent on Living Program, at Kings View at various sites, as well as at Kaiser in Fresno before coming to the Kaiser Cupertino clinic. I have been a manager in mental health in different capacities including managing managers of a Day Treatment Program, Crisis Services, Adult Outpatient Program, and an AB2034 program. I have been a Coordinator for Quality Improvement/Privacy Director, Manager of Case Management for a Children s Outpatient Program, and have been an Executive Director/County Mental Health Director for Kings View. Previously, I have also worked in Children s Services at Fresno County Mental Health. At Kaiser in Fresno, I worked as a licensed psychologist and currently, at Kaiser in Cupertino, I am working as a manager for the Intensive Outpatient Program. As a supervisor I am committed to the growth and development of those I supervise. I have been a Training Director and supervisor for pre-doctoral psychology interns in Mariposa as part of the Central California Psychology Internship Consortium. I have also supervised both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral interns at Kaiser. Currently, I am Site Director for the Santa Clara Adult Post- Doctoral Resident program within the South Bay Consortium. As a clinician, I work collaboratively with each individual to identify problematic themes that influence how they think, feel, and behave. Just as art and music have layers of meaning and interpretation, I believe that therapy can reveal similar insights about each of us. Emotional challenges have complex causes that can result in themes that have consequences for our body, our emotions, our behaviors and our thoughts. These themes can be learned in our interpersonal relationships and experiences. By filtering experiences through our preferred themes, the perception of some themes become more available and other possible interpretations and themes are less available to us. It's even possible to make choices about people and events that are more likely to elicit problematic themes. These choices often bring someone into therapy. I believe that every person has the capacity for growth and has unique strengths that can be used to develop new coping skills. Change requires a commitment to self-reflection, to learn new skills, and a willingness to practice the new skills regularly. It takes courage and perseverance to change and I applaud those who are willing to engage in the process. I look forward to working with you.

Peter Ly, Psy.D I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist and obtained my doctorate degree from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) in Alameda. Having received my pre-doctoral clinical training at the National Asian American Psychology Training Center of RAMS, Inc. in 2000, I completed my post-doctoral fellowship at Kaiser Permanente Milpitas in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and joined the staff in I have worked in a variety of settings with adults, children, and adolescents. In addition to my experiences in community mental health centers, I have provided services in inpatient psychiatric facilities when I completed a practicum placement at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Barbara Aaron Pavilion (BAP) in I bring a range of training and experiences to my work here at Kaiser Permanente in groups and individual/family psychotherapy. I currently co-lead the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Middle School Age and am on the Centralized Triage team. My clinical interests include teen and child/family issues, depression, anxiety, and crisis interventions. I tend to conceptualize cases more dynamically but my interventions are more consistent with CBT, Family Systems, and Integrative therapy. I draw much of my work from Schema Therapy. Part of my role and responsibilities in the South Bay Consortium is that I am a primary supervisor and a Site Director. I enjoy both the clinical work and the privilege to supervise incoming post-doctoral residents. Individual Supervisors Theresa Abrams, Ph.D I received my Bachelor s of Arts with honors degree in Psychology from Brown University and my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Berkeley in I completed a two year post doctoral training program in Child Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. Since starting at Kaiser in Child Psychiatry in 1987 I have developed a special interest in emergency psychiatry, crisis intervention and work with high risk families. I was a member of the team who developed the model in 1995 for the Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program in the Northern California Region. This program provides intensive outpatient treatment for teens and children after discharge from an inpatient hospital psychiatric unit. I continue to work with this high risk population along with a multidisciplinary team of providers and find the work challenging, exciting and gratifying. This work has also taught me about the process of change and the power of family intervention as a key to promoting lasting change. It has also reinforced the importance and effectiveness of working closely with a team of professionals who both collaborate and coordinate care and are available for consultation. Although I tend to conceptualize cases from a dynamic object relations point of view, my interventions and work in therapy is more consistent with a Family Systems approach and I utilize both CBT and DBT strategies. I have been supervising new staff and trainees including post

doctoral residents since the formation of the training program both in group supervision and individual supervision. This is an exciting part of my professional responsibilities as it allows for collaborative work with families, case consultation and joint learning. Gary Rezowalli, Ph.D I received my PhD from the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in August In addition, I earned a Master of Science degree in School Psychology from San Jose State University in While working as a school psychologist in several local school districts I obtained my PhD and obtained my postdoc hours at San Jose Kaiser Child Psychiatry. I was subsequently employed by Kaiser where I have worked full time as a psychologist since I continue to serve as a consultant to local school district, often in the more challenging cases. My early training focused on behavioral therapy however my doctoral training emphasized psychoanalytic psychotherapy. With Kaiser Permanente having a short-term, problem focused model of treatment, I favor a CBT approach in many cases which I have found to be effective. In my practice I see a wide variety of cases which necessitates flexibility in treatment options. I am often given acting out teenagers and have run parent groups to deal with the challenges of adolescents. Because of my educational background I am often consulted on school related issues and the less common developmental disabilities. During my tenure at Kaiser I have coordinated the testing program in the child unit, spent time in the ASD clinic when it was opening, play a role as union steward, and served as the ASD champion for a time. I began supervising trainees over fifteen years ago and continue to act as a secondary supervisor. I am on the on-call team which takes calls, distributes intakes to the clinic, and provides consultation to emergency room in times of crisis. I find the variety of activities and flexibility in routine to be an essential factor in my longevity at Kaiser. I have always enjoyed participating in the trainee program and the enthusiasm and new ideas brought to the clinic by our postdoctoral residents. I see supervision as a collaborative effort and have been very proud of our trainees as they pass their final examinations and become licensed professionals. Smitha Rau, Psy.D My education and training experiences have taken me across the country. I received my Masters and Doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL, receiving the Dean's Achievement Award upon graduation in I continued with further training in South Florida at The Renfrew Center, specializing in eating disorders and also specialized in geriatrics. I relocated to California in 2011 and after working in private practice in Southern California, I joined the Adult Psychiatry department at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara, CA.

I use an eclectic approach in treating patients, combining CBT, DBT, relational and family systems concepts. As such I enjoy using creativity to tailor treatment plans to meet individual needs. I recognize that growth and change in patients begins with the power of the clinical relationship. I enjoy providing services to under-served individuals and making mental health care accessible to those who are hesitant to seek therapy. I have been supervising Masters and Doctoral level students for the last 4 years in various settings. I enjoy fostering the supervisory relationship and supporting budding clinicians as they develop into strong independent practitioners. I find the training process to be very rewarding. Gail Shen, Ph.D Dr. Shen received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and her Ph.D. from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the VA of Northern California before joining Kaiser Permanente as a post-doctoral resident in Mountain View's Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Shen has enjoyed supervising postdoctoral residents for the past 6 years, and served as Site Director for Santa Clara's Adult Team from 2011 to Dr, Shen's clinical interests include working with patients with mood and anxiety disorders. Her research on bipolar spectrum disorders has been published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology and Bipolar Disorders. Dr. Shen also specializes in working with prenatal and postpartum women adjusting to the challenges of parenting. She currently facilitates a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy group as well as a Bipolar Support group. Beem Wilder, Ph.D Welcome, I am Beem Wilder, Ph.D. I graduated from San Jose State University and received my doctorate in Psychology from Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in My training included fellowships at U.C. Santa Cruz Counseling Center and Kaiser Permanente in San Jose Child Psychiatry. I have trained as a meditation practitioner and have taught meditation for the last 25 years in a variety of settings. I joined Kaiser Permanente in I have been a supervisor for post-doctoral residents for the last 15 years. At Kaiser Permanente, I work at both Santa Clara and Campbell Child Psychiatry. I enjoy being a supervisor because it is a great opportunity to learn and grow together for all concerned. In our clinic we value the importance of community and we support and appreciate the unique contribution of everyone on the team. Post-docs have brought unique and important interventions, new groups, and a wonderful fresh perspective to patient care and clinic culture. One of my specialties is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). IOP is a multi-family posthospitalization step-down group. Post-Doctoral residents are a key component of this group and have developed many of our activities. I also integrate Mindfulness Psychotherapy and practice

into my supervision and training presentations. I offer a weekly family mediation group for all ages. Over the years, I have often seen that supervision, at the post-doctoral level, is not so exclusively focused on techniques but focuses on working on the deeper strategies that develop our clinical intuition, compassion, and deep listening skills. I enjoy the south bay and many post-doctoral residents and staff have also enjoyed the access to the outdoors: hiking, year-round biking, surfing and many more great hobbies. Kristin Schleifer, Ph.D I have had a long-standing interest and respect for the culture of children and adolescents, and the ways in which youth navigate challenges in life. I am very interested in family dynamics and working with young people to both provide support and help to develop tools that empower positive change, and movement towards health. I value being a part of an interdisciplinary team, that works together to address the needs of the families we serve. I completed my post-doctoral training at Kaiser Santa Clara Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 2011, and am now a staff psychologist. As a graduate of the South Bay Consortium, I know the post-doctoral training program from both sides: as a resident and now as a supervisor. Our program provides a supportive environment for post-docs to get experience working with a full range of challenges, transitions, mental health issues and other stressors that affect children, teens and families today. This program would be a good fit for a person who loves to learn and is looking for a challenging, fast-paced environment that requires flexibility, independent decisionmaking, and sound clinical judgment, with the support and supervision of licensed providers and a collaborative clinical team. I believe this last year of training is very important for a resident to sharpen his/her skills and gain exposure in new areas. I enjoy supervising residents because of the energy and curiosity they bring to our team. I also enjoy helping new psychologists develop their professional identity and prepare for licensure. Prior to Kaiser Permanente, I worked in an elementary school, a general therapy practice, community mental health, a special day classroom, a middle school and an inpatient psychiatric unit. My graduate work and clinical experience has focused extensively on child, adolescent and family therapy. I have a special interest in integrating mental health and physical health. I enjoy working with pediatricians and other providers, and act as a liaison between the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Psychiatry. One of my responsibilities includes going on rounds in the hospital with the pediatric medial team in our General Pediatric Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit where I assess for mental health issues and evaluate patients for psychiatric hospitalization/5150. I also work with the Department of Outpatient Pediatrics to help connect the services we provide in Psychiatry to a larger group of families. I developed a Consultation Liaison program in

Pediatrics to provide brief evaluations, make recommendations and provide support to young people and their families who may not need ongoing care in Psychiatry. In this role I can determine if more intensive services are indicated, and can provide education to families about the benefits of groups, parent classes or individual and family therapy. I am also part of our IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) for teens that have recently been psychiatrically hospitalized, and their families. This is an intensive, twice-weekly multifamily program that promotes communication and coping skills following discharge from the hospital. I believe that a time of crisis can often lead to major positive shifts and changes when families are open to looking at old challenges in new ways. I value integrating evidence-based practices in my work, including utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness techniques to help youth better understand the mind-body connection. I also incorporate psychodynamic, narrative and art therapy techniques in my practice. I believe that our childhood experiences can have a lasting effect on how we understand relationships and interact within the world. I received my BA in English from Saint Mary s College of California, Moraga. I received my MA in Children s Literature from Simmons College in Boston, and my MS in Clinical Psychology from the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Palo Alto, where I also earned my Ph.D. in I completed my pre-doctoral internship at Miami Children s Hospital, and my post-doctoral residency training at Kaiser Permanente in Pamela Singer, Psy.D Welcome! My name is Pam Singer, and I am a licensed clinical psychologist and secondary supervisor at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara. I received my Doctoral degree at the PGSP- Stanford PsyD Consortium and was fortunate to train at several sites in the area, including the Veterans Hospital (VAPAHCS), the Stanford Mood Disorders Clinic, and Santa Clara University. During my training, I developed a strong focus on DBT. I consider myself an integrative psychologist and I also utilize a variety of other modalities, including CBT and interpersonal approaches. While I enjoy working with the wide variety of diagnoses we treat here at Kaiser, my training has allowed me to focus on the challenging populations of patients struggling with eating disorders and PTSD. I currently co-lead the Adult Eating Disorder Program as well as the PTSD Recovery Program. I strive to maintain variety in my professional activities, so I enjoy balancing my work in those areas of the clinic by also working on the Crisis Response Team (Triage) and supervising postdoctoral residents. I was a post-doctoral resident at Kaiser Permanente in 2010 and can relate to the experiences that make residency exciting, rewarding, and challenging at the same time. I find the experience of supervising very satisfying, and enjoy collaborating with and supporting residents as they develop their own unique styles. At this stage in professional development, I find that building

independence and efficacy are main focal points, and it is a privilege to get to join new professionals as they continue on toward their goals. Cate Marino, Psy.D Welcome residents! I am a clinical psychologist working in the Adult Psychiatry Department at Kaiser Santa Clara. I did my own post-doctoral residency at Kaiser in As such, I can certainly relate to your experience as a resident here, the challenges and opportunities associated with the training. I look forward to being able to share my experience with you and to help you meet your training goals for the year. My approach to supervision is rooted in a developmental perspective, meeting residents where they are at. Each of our residents comes to the program with different strengths and areas for needed growth. Depending on your specific needs and goals, we will work collaboratively to hone your training experience and move you towards feeling confident in your skills and your autonomous practice. In terms of my own training background, I completed my post-doctoral residency at Kaiser San Francisco in their Chronic Pain Management Department. For my pre-doctoral internship training, I worked at the Veteran s Affairs Hospital in Loma Linda, focusing on general psychiatric outpatient services, PTSD treatment, and neuropsychological testing. I have also had tenures at other VA facilities focusing primarily on PTSD treatment and behavioral medicine services. In addition, I have worked with young adults in college counseling center and job corps environments. My clinical approach is integrative in nature, heavily influenced by CBT, interpersonal, and narrative approaches. I also regularly teach my patients about the mind-body connection and psycho-physiological regulation strategies. Melody Bumgardner, Ph.D I received my Bachelor of Arts from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN with a major in psychology and a minor in history. I earned my Master's and Doctoral degrees from the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Palo Alto, California (now Palo Alto University). Before coming to Kaiser Permanente I worked in county and community mental health clinics, a VA hospital, and a university counseling center. I joined Kaiser Permanente in I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, and lead groups for eating disorders and body image issues. I am also part of the triage team and lead a self esteem group. I believe in forming a collaborative relationship with my patients. I look forward to helping them identify changes they can make to improve their quality of life, and then to assist them in learning and practicing the skills necessary to reach those goals. I use interventions from different

therapies, including CBT, DBT, and ACT. I also believe in identifying which stage of change a patient is at and in working with them to increase their motivation to make changes. I believe the role of therapy is to help patients learn that they have the power to change their own lives and choose how to manage what happens to them. I have supervised post doctoral residents at Kaiser Santa Clara since I enjoy supervision and working with residents to help them develop the therapeutic style that works best for them. I also look forward to learning from residents and collaborating with them. Sloan Payne, Ph.D I have worked at Kaiser Permanente since January, My strongest intellectual interests in Psychology are in matching treatment to personality type, increasing the efficiency of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, using Object Relations research to increase the power of the therapeutic alliance, integrating cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic treatments with patients' spiritual beliefs. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: BA in Psychology in 1966, PhD in Clinical Psychology in My internship in Clinical Psychology was in at the Ohio State University Medical School. I have held adjunct teaching positions at the College of William and Mary, the University of Vermont and Antioch Graduate School. I have been a member of the American Psychological Association since 1980 and the National Register since Currently licensed in California, I have also been licensed in Vermont and North Carolina. I have been supervising since 1977.
