3 ABOUT CALVIUM Calvium provide software development, tools and services for the exploration and creation of mobile applications. We have a passion for working closely with our clients to create beautifully designed and creatively engineered apps, we call this process co-creation. We ve worked with clients from a range of industries using an agile approach to meet their needs. An agile project is about creating fast iterations of products based on the feedback of real users. It means that you learn quickly and don t invest too much at the outset. As experts in User Experience our design approach always starts with the user. We identify user stories in order to focus our design and to ensure that the end result is intuitive and delightful to use. Our four main services are: GPS sound walks, street stories and tours Custom native ios and Android app development DIY app development for creative professionals User-led indoor navigation & wayfinding In this document we describe our approach to App Development or AppDev. We show how we apply the approach in three areas: Apps for Enterprise, Appliance Control Apps and Rapid Prototyping. 1

4 ABOUT APPDEV Our AppDev service helps you introduce innovative mobile apps into your organisation. Our process and methods help you to realise ideas quickly and rapidly prototype to demonstrate feasibility. We ve worked with a variety of prestigious brands such as The Guardian, Rolls-Royce and the Royal Shakespeare Company to create street stories, games, engineering apps and app development platforms. Our technical background working on cutting-edge mobile and pervasive technologies at Hewlett-Packard research laboratories, means that we are able to co-create mobile systems with companies working on new products, complex engineering and industrial research. All projects are a journey from discovery to delivery, and beyond. We believe that the best work is a result of collaboration and co-creation. To facilitate this, we follow a three step process: DISCOVERY Understand the brand, business, content and technology to define objectives. Identify personas and user stories AGILE DEVELOPMENT Design the User Experience, develop initial concepts, rapidly prototype them and test with users. Refine and test again until satisfied. DELIVERY Fully develop the app for public or internal distribution. Manage and maintain it. 5 APPS FOR ENTERPRISE With the increase of mobile devices being used in the workplace; there is a new, untapped opportunity to develop enterprise mobile apps to assist your organisation in solving enterprise problems. Mobile apps can provide focused, user-centred tools for commonly undertaken activities within organisations. Good indicators for a potential app include: tasks that require access to multiple, complex systems tasks that have a preferred, but difficult-to-remember process tasks that would be made easier by guidance and helpful instruction Case Study: Rolls-Royce, CONGA Calvium worked with Rolls-Royce on their Configuration Optimisation of Next Generation Aircraft (CONGA) project, exploring innovative capabilities for future products. Together we identified the potential impact an internal mobile app could have and Calvium delivered a prototype app to support their product design processes. The app was developed through a user-centred design process, focused on key engineering roles within Rolls-Royce. The activity enabled Rolls-Royce to: clarify and refine the concepts underlying their design processes demonstrate and test an app for managing their product design process understand the requirements for connection to back office systems provide a compelling demonstration of the potential value of deploying apps across Rolls-Royce Working with Calvium to produce apps that our design engineers can test in their own work environments has been revolutionary. Now we have a great way to develop new Knowledge Management capabilities independently of our core IT systems. 6 APPLIANCE CONTROL APPS The ability to use smartphone apps to control appliances either directly or via the internet, is an increasingly important trend. Calvium have decades of technical expertise in designing and writing software that can communicate with sensors and interpret data from them. We have worked with a number of companies who are designing new products for monitoring homes or creating smart appliances. From interpreting LED flashes on washing machines, to controlling the heat of your shower, we have developed apps that change the way device manufacturers can do business. Case Study: Danlers ControlZAPP Danlers Limited manufacture a vast range of energy-saving controls for lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Calvium designed and developed an app to control lighting in working spaces such as; offices, warehouses, retail units, hospitals, schools and leisure parks. The app communicates via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), so that devices can be programmed on site. A clear, simple to use, convenient and flexible set-up and programming procedure enables both end users and installers to configure the ControlZAPP-enabled product to suit their requirements to save energy. At Danlers we found the app making process easy with the help of Calvium. They took the time to properly understand what we wanted to achieve with the app, and the result of that was something that very much looked like a Danlers product; the interface and graphics reflected the unfussy, clear ethos of our brand. Ben s firm grasp of the technology plus his clear understanding of our aims resulted in a sensical product. 7 METHODS AND TOOLS FOR RAPID PROTOTYPING The agile approach adopted by Calvium is one that is recommended by the UK Government s Digital by Default Service Standard. Unique to Calvium however, is the ability to use our own rapid development platform, AppFurnace, to explore ideas with our clients. AppFurnace Ideation Workshop The Calvium Ideation Workshop combines idea generation with practical hands on learning. We work with key personnel in an organisation to: discuss mobile strategy evaluate good ideas to explore further sketch and prototype those ideas summarise the findings in a practical plan of action A big thank you to all for the enlightening day. I'm very excited about the possibilities of this new media and how it can benefit my clients as well as the additional revenue stream. It really has opened a whole new world... Anonymised feedback from an attendee AppFurnace for Business AppFurnace for Business enables business professionals to create their own apps for internal distribution or for their customers without having to win high-level management support or gain access to an over-stretched IT department. They can explore the potential of an idea through DIY prototyping, progress it with in built business-specific resources and expertise, then complete the job themselves. Throughout this process Calvium will be available to help. Just as spreadsheets historically empowered employees to organise their own data, AppFurnace for Business can empower business professionals to create their own simple apps that streamline their working processes. 5

8 THE CALVIUM MANAGEMENT TEAM Calvium have sixty years collective mobile experience and have pioneered location-based apps in Europe and the USA. Leaving Hewlett-Packard Laboratories to found Calvium, they have continued their passion for helping industries succeed with mobile. Jo Reid (MBA, BSC) Creative, Sales and Marketing Director Jo specialises in site-specific experience design and running AppFurnace Ideation workshops. With a background working for such tech companies as Xerox and Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, her clients benefit from her comprehensive knowledge of mobile apps and user journeys. Working closely with clients such as Rolls-Royce, The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Guardian to name a few, Jo forms the close working relationships vital to Calvium s co-creational process and ultimately, project success. This passion has resulted in Jo being a finalist for Brand You s Award for Client Services 2014 and the Everywoman Innovator of the Year Tom Melamed (MSc, BSc) Accounts and Strategy Director Tom is responsible for ongoing Account management with our app development clients. Tom has worked with clients such as E3, Bristol 24/7, Fatbrain and Rockpool. Having written both apps and technical research papers, Tom has a strong and well established technical background. Tom delights in blending this technical knowledge with a genuine interest in his clients, the problems they are trying to solve and the experiences they are trying to create. Tom works with and supports his clients throughout the process; from early brainstorming to helping the app flourish once it s in the public eye. This holistic approach to app development has resulted in him winning the Brand You Awards Apps and Games category in 2014 and one of the apps he managed winning a nationally recognised Digital Impact Award.
