4 University of Pittsburgh NCI grant 2004 Fox Chase Partner Program began Navigation programs 2004 Fox Chase Program Director Linda Fleisher met in Pittsburgh to discuss ideas for Pennsylvania Department of Health Pilot Grant 2005 Meetings of Navigators was taking place in Western Pennsylvania in 2006
5 First Pennsylvania Navigator Workshop in Philadelphia saw 90 participants, engaged in the new arena of navigation Panel discussion Navigation Idea of state wide group was born
6 Surveys from workshop we found: Need for additional resources in the field, connections to other patient navigators, continuing education for established programs, and best practices for new programs or institutions looking to begin a navigation program.
7 Linda Fleisher, PhD, MPH is the Assistant Vice President of Fox Chase Cancer Center s Office of Health Communications and Health Disparities, and past Program Director of the Atlantic Region Cancer Information Service, Philadelphia, PA. Aileen Galley, ACSW, LSW is the Administrative Director of the Penn State Cancer Institute at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, PA. Karen Schwaderer, RN, BSN, OCN is the Breast Navigator at the West Penn Allegheny Health System, Forbes Regional Campus. Previously, she worked to develop research based Navigator programs for an NCI funded grant throughout Western Pennsylvania. Elaine Sein, RN, BSN, OCN, CBCN is the Senior Project Manager for the Fox Chase Cancer Partner Program which established a Breast Care Coordinator/Patient Navigator program in 2004.
8 In response to stated needs of patient navigators across the state: the mission of the PPNN is to create a sustainable network of patient navigators for resource and information sharing and to build best practice approaches in patient navigation with the overall goal of reducing the burden of cancer in Pennsylvania.
