1 1 Erik Hagoort (1962) Erik Hagoort's practice comprises theoretical and performative research into encounter. Encounter is subject matter ànd form of his work. After his graduation in theology (drs., University of Amsterdam, 1989 specializations social work and philosophy of ethics) he started to write about contemporary art, focusing on the relation between ethics and social art practices. Writing about these practices brought him to participating in them. Participating turned into staging encounters and this eventually developed into his own art practice of encounter. Next to his artistic practice Hagoort contributes with essays, articles, lectures and presentations to the discourse of social art practice. Since 2006 Hagoort works as tutor of the master fine art course of the St. Joost Academy of Art and Design in Den Bosch/ Breda, the Netherlands. He works on his doctorate in the arts, titled 'Resuming Encounters. Sensibility for Asymmetry' at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, Belgium. A Private Rehearsal followed by public broadcasting , Studio Erik Hagoort, Amsterdam, the Netherlands Motif of this symprovisation: the impossibility to see oneself from the outside. To see yourself, you need the other to see you. To make an encounter by weaving toward each other. That was the motive of the Weaving Encounter, which I organized end of 2014 in St. Petersburg. In the gobelin studio of Natalya Vasilevna-Pershina at Petrogradskaya island we produced a gobelin, without a loom, without a plan, by hand. We created the tapestry using a horizontal frame in the form of a table. Sitting at all sides of the table frame we weaved toward each other and formed the tapestry as an encounter. Symprovisation on Art and Empathy A Public Rehearsal followed by a Private Performance , Sector 2337, Chicago IL, USA Five participants worked with the motive of art and empathy while they practiced to avoid questions and answers. The rehearsal took place from 3 to 6 pm and was open to the public. As the gallery closed at 6pm, the symprovisation was created privately, behind closed doors; the piece was recorded, and only then became accessible to the public. (after Lewis Hyde) / , Tranzit, Boekarest, Roemenië For three days on a row, during three sessions, seven Dutch and Romanian art practitioners gathered at Tranzit to share experiences of reciprocity in social art practice. This private exploration resulted in a public symprovisation. The audience, which was invited to join in, played a substantial role. We all shared this, and tried to think together about the reciprocities and asymmetries of our expectations.
