By 2030, 25% f Canadians will be ver 65; 12% will be ver 85 years f age. Hlryd, Dahlke, Fehr, Jung & Hunter (2009) estimate that 75% f nursing time will be spent with lder adults by Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses must have specialized knwledge and training t effectively educate, assess and care fr lder peple. They require tls and skills t meet the cmplex physical, scial, envirnmental, cgnitive and spiritual needs f the elderly. Nurses need the ability t analyze trends and challenges in the field f Geriatrics. S COPE O F THE PROGRAM Fllwing an verview f the emerging field f Geriatric studies, students will cnsider the elements that cntribute t healthy aging and analyze factrs that deter r undermine wellness. The curse mdules will help each student develp a cnceptual framewrk fr geriatric assessment in the spheres f psychscial, physilgic and mental health. A chice f several electives will allw each nurse t enrich their persnal educatinal needs. G ENERAL LEARNING O UTCOMES Upn the cmpletin f this certificate prgram each nurse will: interpret basic geriatric trends and issues; accumulate and test a wide variety f health assessment tls; be equipped t prvide leadership in team settings demnstrate critical, innvative thinking in prblem slving; illustrate hw t educate twards wellness; and develp advcacy skills at relatinal and plicy-making levels. The intrductry curse and sme electives wuld be f interest t ther health r scial science students and prfessinals seeking geriatric educatin. Distance Educatin allws nurses the flexibility t immerse themselves in a dynamic specialty while pursuing ther life and career gals. Self-paced study allws each student t adjust their educatin t their lifestyle and learning needs. Variety and chice within curse assignments encurages the student t pursue tpics f persnal interest. 3 T IME FRAME This certificate prgram can be cmpleted within tw years f part-time studies, and must be cmpleted in fur years. A new chrt fr each certificate prgram is admitted in September f each year. If nly 1 elective is ffered, the chice will be made by majrity selectin. S TUDENT POPULATION Full-certificate Individual Curses Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses with a minimum f 1 year nursing experience with adults. Nurses, and ther health r scial sciences students and prfessinals, wh wish t take individual curses r wh chse t wrk at a slwer pace while cmpleting curse requirements. F REQUENTLY ASKED Q UESTIONS What is the cst f this prgram? The first base curse is apprximately $230. Thereafter, each 3 credit curse will be apprximately $630 and each 2 credit elective will be apprximately $420. Bks will be apprximately $450 ver the tw years. 3 cre textbks and a few auxiliary bks will supplement current jurnal articles. There are n extra curse manuals. All ther materials will be available n the cmputer site and can be printed by participants. The ttal cst f the Certificate prgram, will be apprximately $4000 fr 19 credits f curses. NOTE: This culd be cntrasted with a nrmal cst f $ $ $1,000 bks fr ne year f cllege r university studies. NOTE: Based n inflatin, an increase f n mre than 2% may be added t curses. Hw is this curse ffered? All curses are ffered n-line thrugh a Mdle platfrm. Each 3 credit curse will require abut 5 10 hurs f wrk per week, depending n yur persnal rate f study and the types f assignments due fr that week. GERO Cntemprary Issues in Gerntlgy The rapidly aging ppulatin f industrialized cuntries will impact r change all aspects f ur sciety ver the next 50 years. This curse will prvide a histrical perspective and verview f aging in Canada. A study f theries f gain, demgraphic trends and current research will lead t an explratin f the implicatins f aging in ur culture. Prerequisites: Health r Scial Science Students and Prfessinals. GNUR Intrductin t Gerntlgical Nursing This curse will detail the unique rles and functins f geriatric nursing by explring histrical underpinnings, scietal needs, and current issues. Tw cnceptual mdels fr nursing acutely ill, chrnically ill r frail elders will prvide a grundwrk fr use f assessment tls and critical analysis. A fcus n health prmtin and wellness in later life will guide and direct nursing leadership in the care f lder adults. Web, electrnic and jurnal resurces that supprt nursing practice will be identified. Prerequisites: GERO 200, and GNUR 300 is preferable. Licensed as an RN r LPN. GNUR Psychscial Issues Impacting Aging As peple age, cgnitive and affective functin can be impacted by life events, rle change, persnal chice and behaviur, acute and chrnic disease, r envirnmental stressrs. With a view t helping the lder individual attain their ptimal level f wellness, this curse will explre thse psychscial issues thrugh the lens f Maslw s Hierarchy f Needs. Readings and curse dialgue will help gerntlgical nurses develp strategies t assess cping ability, identify risk factrs that undermine independence and well-being, and prmte psychscial health. Prerequisites: GERO 200, and GNUR 300 are preferred. Licensed as an RN r LPN. GNUR Physilgical Functin in the Aged This curse fcuses n the nrmal changes f aging in all bdy systems. Select chrnic diseases r cnditins and their treatment mdalities will be reviewed. Using Carl Miller s (2009) Mdel fr Prmting Wellness in Older Adults, an explratin f ptential risk factrs, iatrgenic cmplicatins, and functinal challenge will lead the nurse t critically think abut hw t enhance health functin. 5 GNUR Delirium, Dementia and Depressin in the Elderly This curse will lk at current theries f causality, presenting behaviurs, risk factrs and therapies fr each f these cnditins. The impact n the family and prfessinal caregivers will be assessed. Dementia nursing care will fcus n methds t enhance and retain patient abilities. Prerequisites: GNUR 300 is preferred. Licensed as an RN r LPN. Electives (4 Credits in Ttal) GNUR 210 Spirituality in Aging As the physical bdy ages, it declines and deterirates. In cntrast, the Human Spirit cntinues t develp and mature until the end f life. This curse examines the imprtance f Spirituality in aging, and its effects n health, wellness and achievement f meaning in life. Current research and tls t assess spiritual needs will be examined. Rles and pprtunities fr caregivers t prmte the spirituality f aging persns will be explred. GNUR 310 Medicatin Use and Abuse Mst aging peple use medicatin (prescriptin r ver-the-cunter) t treat a variety f chrnic r symptmatic prblems. This curse seeks t define the nursing rle in medicatin management with aging clients. An understanding f the pharmackinetics and pharmacdynamics related t the aging bdy will assist the gerntlgical nurse in understanding drug reactins. Reasns fr drug misuse and abuse will be explred, and principles and strategies develped t imprve drug regime cmpliance. Tls t assist with medicatin prfile analysis will be presented. Prerequisites: Licensed as an RN r LPN. GNUR End f Life Care and Palliatin Palliative care is the unique way caregivers think, respnd, and act as they give skilled and cmpassinate care t a dying persn and the supprt system f that persn. The curse begins by helping each nurse understand their wn perceptins f death and palliatin by reflecting n their experiences with dying peple. Each participant will gain specific and current knwledge abut symptm assessment and management, and hw t deal with selected palliative emergency situatins. Particularly unique aspects f caring fr the dying, i.e., family care, cmmunicatin, grief, and self-care will be explred. Prerequisites: GNUR 300 is preferred. Licensed as an RN r LPN. P ROGRAM FORMAT Curse shuld be taken in scheduled rder unless alternate arrangements are made with the Instructr. Participants must cmplete the Prgram within 4 years frm starting date. A registratin frm will be sent t yu electrnically. Ntificatin f yur acceptance int the Prgram will be made by letter when yur applicatin has been apprved by the Prgram Crdinatr. Once accepted, yu may register fr the first curse r elective. Register by July 31 st t ensure yur seat in the next available chrt. H OW TO APPLY FOR EACH I NDIVIDUAL COURSE T register fr a curse, nce accepted int the prgram: Individuals r rganizatins that wuld like t register their emplyees may pay by credit card (MasterCard r VISA), r arrange fr invicing by: Telephning frm 9 am - 4 pm Mnday t Friday. W ITHDRAWALS AND R EFUND POLICY Students may withdraw frm a curse if requested 10 business days befre curse start date by cntacting the Prgram Crdinatr by telephne r in writing. Students wh want t withdraw and receive a refund must prvide a written request t the Prgram Crdinatr stating the reasns and enclsing the receipt. Refunds are subject t an administrative charge f 20% f the curse fee. N refunds are permitted after curse materials have been sent t students. Alternatively, at the discretin f the Prgram Directr, students can be issued a "deferred fee credit", valid fr ne year fr 100% f the prgram registratin fee.
