19 Higher Education As universities and community colleges respond to the growing need for higher education, they look to WLC to design facilities that are distinguished, inspire students, and enhance curriculum. Colleges and universities have established reputations to maintain. While they are educating students in the present, these leading institutions are visioning the future. It is critical to understand how today s student learns and what they expect of the teaching and learning spaces. Higher education architecture must be adaptable, sustainable, and forward thinking. Facilitated teaching through an interactive learning environment is key. WLC has extensive experience with the California Community College Chancellor s Office (CCCCO) as well as all state agencies that govern institutional projects. WLC is an active member of the California Community College League, the Association of Chief Business Officials (ACBO), the Foundation for California Community Colleges, and the Chancellor s Circle. We understand the importance of shared governance and have developed a proven interactive design process. Participatory planning and design methodology builds partnerships, consensus, and teamwork. It empowers decision makers with tools for creating optimum strategies for the best facility design. For our university and community college clients, we provide campus-wide master planning, needs and infrastructure assessments, project budgeting, and development plans. As a full service architecture firm, we have the capability to design and develop any campus project from inception to completion. Our higher education portfolio includes science labs, allied health labs, classrooms, aeronautics labs, culinary arts facilities, performing arts theaters, aquatic facilities, athletic facilities, and student centers. 31 Civic WLC has designed a wide range of community service buildings. These projects feature civic centers, community centers, libraries, senior centers, and performing and cultural arts centers. Our essential service portfolio includes fire and police stations, fire training centers, and emergency operations centers. Community architecture is born from careful planning and expert design. WLC endeavors to provide solutions that enrich and knit together the fabric of local neighborhoods while celebrating their diversity. We address public safety concerns by creating facilities that are neighborhood friendly which helps inspire trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve and protect. Our civic facilities strive to inspire pride in a community. Many of these specialized facilities require preparation of long-range master plans, needs assessment and feasibility studies, and detailed architectural programming. WLC is able to lead any group in developing complex, detailed plans for future development. We have well-established relationships with many California public agencies and municipalities and can skillfully obtain approvals through planning and building and safety departments. WLC

43 Religious WLC continues to work faithfully with a diverse cross section of devout congregations throughout California. For religious organizations who typically build generationally, constructing a place of worship requires full trust in their Architect. WLC takes special care to lead a building committee through a process of education to enable entrusted members to make wise decisions. With every project, the design and building process is an opportunity for WLC and the congregation to be part of a wonderful spiritual growth experience. WLC seeks to create places for worship and fellowship that balance tradition with technology, encourage seekers, support members, and bring them together as a purposeful community of believers. There are few other building types in which spirit and substance come together, translating something that is intangible into that which can be fully realized. The most rewarding religious architecture results from worship settings that invite a deeply personal relationship between each believer and God. WLC

47 Sustainable WLC has a longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship. In 1995, WLC designed the first LEED pilot project in California. Southern California Gas Company s Energy Resource Center was used as model to help test the benchmark for future high performing projects. Since then we have designed numerous sustainable projects for our educational, civic, and community clients. WLC s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by our stellar team of 27 LEED Accredited professionals and our commitment to become an AIA 2030 Firm. This commitment requires sustainable business practices as well as sustainable architecture. At WLC we believe that sustainable architecture and environmental design can achieve greater energy efficiency, create rewarding work and learning environments, achieve optimum indoor air quality, enhance user performance, and provide savings to operation budgets. With every project, clients, architects, and contractors have the opportunity to minimize the impact on the environment by working together to establish performance standards and making wise choices that will impact the future. Our sustainable portfolio includes the planning and design of specialty systems: windmill generation, ice storage systems, solar hot water heating, solar photovoltaic systems, and straw bale building construction. Attention to site orientation, envelope design, and systems are standard practice in our firm. We provide energy modeling with the use of BIM technology to assist us in achieving LEED and CHPS certification or to obtain grants from the Savings by Design program. WLC
