Discussin by Tpic: Online and Hybrid Curse Structure: Chic has a BSW prgram admitting apprximately 15 students each fall. Their MSW prgram is a 2.5-year chrt mdel that currently has 40 students. This chrt began in the fall f 2013 and will graduate in May f At that time, 45 students frm Chic may be eligible and able t apply t the MSW prgram there. Humbldt is cmpletely nline, minus an intense 4-day face-t-face meeting befre the curses begin. The BSW prgram is prvided in either a 2-year full-time prgram r a 4-year part-time prgram. The MSW prgram is a 3.5-year prgram. Distance Learning Cncerns: Celeste shared that sme prfessrs were nt cmfrtable with distance learning at first but have cme t lve it. Others remain uncmfrtable and may always be uncmfrtable with the frmat. That is k. Funding and Sustainability: Virginia asked abut the partnership between the regin, the universities and CalSWEC. The regin funds a distance learning crdinatr (Dnna Jensen), sme admin supprt, wellness/recvery curse develpment, and the mentrship prgram. The university pays fr teachers, technlgy, tech supprt, administratin and field instructr(s). Page 2 f 5

The Superir Regin cntinues t supprt the prgram at a reduced cst t the initial funding (apprximately half). Ken will share the public budget infrmatin via after the call. Sme ne-time funding prjects f the prgram included the develpment f nline cntent. State Supprted versus Cntinuing Educatin: Celeste shared that the prgrams at Chic State are state-supprted. She shared althugh the BSW prgram at Humbldt State is state-supprted, the MSW Prgram at Humbldt is prvided thrugh cntinuing ed, and is a bit mre cstly fr students. The stipend prgram, MHLAP and lcal cunty WET financial incentives are being used fr many students t attend the cursewrk. Students are eligible fr the stipend prgram in the final year f the MSW prgram. Time Frames: Dan frm Stanislaus asked hw lng the prgram has been in place and the time table fr implementatin: The directrs in the Superir Regin were talking abut planning this prgram in 2008/2009. Chic State is hsting its 3 rd chrt currently. The regin began t assist with funding at the beginning f the 2 nd chrt. Varius mdels were tried ut, but with feedback frm faculty and students after each semester, the current schedule fr face-t-face time is: 2/3 f class is nline. 2 weekends each semester are spent in-persn n campus. These weekends include 8 hurs n bth Saturday and Sunday). They use smewhat f a flipped classrm mdel which has students using the cmputer lab, plicy and research classes, fr part f the face-t-face time, as tech assistance is easier t btain in an in-persn setting. Practice is als cvered in the face-t-face time. The first weekend f facet-face is prvided apprximately ne mnth after the class starts. The secnd weekend f face-t-face learning is cmpleted apprximately ne mnth befre the class ends. At Chic, every mnth, each f 3 classes meets synchrnusly ne Mnday frm 6PM t 8PM. The 4 th Mnday meets synchrnusly regarding administratin f classes. Student selectin: Celeste and Dnna were asked hw students are selected fr the prgram. They shared that the applicatin prcess is cmpleted thrugh the university. A selfassessment questinnaire is als administered asking students abut nline learning and their strengths/weaknesses and hw they will vercme challenges in the prgram. Student Prerequisites: Debbie DiNt asked if students are expected t have cmpleted their general educatin by the time they apply fr the BSW prgrams. They d; hwever, Dnna Jensen, the distance learning crdinatr wrks clsely with students and admissins t ensure that students get the units they need either thrugh nline curses r curses at cmmunity clleges. The crdinatr has a huge advising cmpnent fr students. This crdinatr psitin is funded by the regin. What wrked: Ken shared that he felt that having champins at the schls and the cunties was helpful unintended cnsequences included a cntinued dialgue between schls and cunties and the develpment f recvery-fcused classes that were relevant t public mental health. 4 Califrnia Institute fr Mental Health Celeste shared that Chic had been ding alternative prgrams with CalSWEC fr sme time already. The partnership between CalSWEC, the universities and the Superir Regin funded the develpment f the prgram and the cntinuing relatinships. She als shared that the university s missin is t deliver educatin in the regin s they needed t reach ut. Dnna shared that scial justice is a tenet f Scial Wrk and a majr impetus f their distance learning prgram. They believe that thse in their regin wh s desire shuld have access t higher educatin despite their prximity t a university. They lked at the research related t success f students wh cmpleted distance learning prgrams versus face-t-face prgrams and fund that the utcmes fr thse wh cmpleted the prgrams were similar. They structure their distance learning prgram as a hybrid mdel including face-t-face instructin, synchrnus and asynchrnus nline learning. Anther helpful part f the prgram is that schl flks meet mnthly t d utreach, student recruitment and cnnect with cunties in the regin, increasing educatinal awareness in their cmmunities. Sme cllabratin with Child Welfare in sme cunties als ccurs. Lessns Learned: Maura O Keefe asked what was the mst challenging parts f cnverting curses r develping them. The fllwing was shared: Adjustment fr faculty t teach Cannt just slap existing classes t an nline frmat. Additinally, nline teaching is ften mre time cnsuming than face-t-face When each teacher develped her wn class, the structure varied greatly nw a template is being develped s classes are structured similarly, althugh with different cntent A different grup f students is attracted t this type f cursewrk many are wrking in public mental health already, are experienced and advcate strngly fr what they need. Teachers that are strng in nline teaching facilitate teaching withut being the sage n the stage. They keep invlved with students and their learning in a different way. Regularly scheduled cnsensus-building meetings f faculty and directr are held regarding strengths and challenge mitigatin f curses/prgram Quality Assurance f the prgram shuld match that f face-t-face prgrams rather than being mre stringent, which is a temptatin fr teachers trying ut this new frmat. E.g., teachers suggested that all classes be vetted amngst all faculty members when this is nt dne fr face-t-face curses. Curses that were develped by teachers that did nt end ut teaching the curse were nt used. Nw, develpers must teach the curse, r if a curse is t be taught, that teacher must develp it using the template fr structure. Field placement can be challenging. Mst f the flks that went int the prgram are wrking in public MH already. That said, directrs need t be aware f emplyment based internships fr 2nd and 3rd year students at 16 t 24 hurs per week, as students must wrk in an area that they are nt familiar with. If students d nt get this pprtunity, they cannt cmplete the prgram. Planning fr this type f supprt well-ahead f time is very helpful. Page 4 f 5

5 Califrnia Institute fr Mental Health Needs Assessment and Evaluatin: Befre the prgram began, a needs assessment was sent ut and received frm ver 600 emplyees in public mental health frm the 15 Superir Regin Cunties. This survey will be shared with us via . Additinally, exit interviews have been cmpleted regarding the structure f the prgram. An exit questinnaire regarding utcmes is currently being develped.
