1 9/2014 Mechanical Engineering Systems BSE at Craven Community College - Havelock Craven Community College Havelock (CCC) is home for NC State s site-based Mechanical Engineering Systems (MES) BSE program and Engineering Transfer program. Students in the MES program earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a concentration in Mechanical Engineering Systems without ever leaving CCC. The MES program gives students a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles including structural mechanics, materials, fluid mechanics, dynamics, vibrations, controls, thermal sciences, mechanical design, and thermal design. Students also receive training in the formal systems engineering approach to the design and realization of integrated systems. This training in formal systems engineering gives students the ability to understand and work through the broad complex issues involved with integrated systems. The training in mechanical engineering principles gives the skill and confidence required to understand and solve detailed technical problems. This unique combination of skills allows students to be well prepared to meet the technical and non-technical challenges of today's engineering workplace. MES students are drawn from a diverse population that includes not only the traditional college student, but also military personnel and civilian staff of FRC-East. Students in the MES program attend class on a fulltime or part-time (day/night) basis. MES students take general education, math, and science courses from CCC and engineering courses from NC State. The 10 mechanical engineering courses in the MES program are taught by the nationally recognized NC State MAE faculty in Raleigh and delivered to the MES students in Havelock via interactive highdefinition video teleconference. Local NC State faculty teach the Systems Engineering content, conduct all laboratory experiences, and direct students in the two-semester capstone design experience where they are partnered with an industry sponsor to design and build a solution to a real-world problem. Hands-on laboratory exercises allow students to explore and experience theoretical concepts learned in their courses and practice important modern skills such as manual and computerized measurement techniques, data analysis, design of experiments and technical communications. Students in the Engineering Transfer program can complete all of the general education, math, and science courses required to transfer into one of the over seventeen engineering degree programs in Raleigh. While a CCC student, these students are offered the chance to take many of the sophomore engineering courses directly from NC State. HOW LONG WILL AN ENGINEERING DEGREE TAKE TO COMPLETE? A full-time student can complete the MES degree in four years from the time they start Calculus-I. It will take a part-time student approximately six years to complete all of the math, science, and engineering courses. Transfer students typically will spend two years at CCC from the time they start Calculus-I and can complete their degree in two to three years after transfer.

2 WHAT MATH BACKGROUND WILL I NEED? A strong math foundation is essential for engineering. If you do not have the math background for calculus, it is imperative you take the time now to build it. To be prepared for calculus, you should have at least the equivalent of college algebra (MAT 171 at CCC) and college trigonometry (MAT 172 at CCC). CCC has ALL of the courses you need to prepare for calculus, so speak with an advisor for more information. WHAT TUITION DO I PAY? The tuition rate for CCC will be paid for all CCC courses and the NCSU tuition rate will be paid for all NCSU distance education courses. WHAT IS REQUIRED TO TRANSFER TO NC STATE? In the MES program, you will first attend CCC or some other school to satisfy transfer requirements. After you complete these courses, you will apply for transfer to NC State University into the MES program. Transfer requirements for the MES program and the general transfer eligibility requirements for on-campus programs are given below. Students are encouraged the check the on-line College of Engineering transfer requirements since many departments have adopted additional GPA and course requirements credit hours or more of transferable college-level courses or higher cumulative GPA on all transferable college-level courses 3. Two college-level English composition courses (ENG 111 and ENG 112 or ENG 113 or ENG 114) 4. College-level chemistry course with lab (CHM 151 or 131 can be used in some cases) or better NCSU GPA. 6. Calculus I and Calculus II (MAT 271 & MAT 272) with at least a 2.5 GPA in the last two calculus or higher college mathematics classes taken. 7. Calculus-based physics-i (PHY 251) HOW DO I GET STARTED? The MES curriculum along with a part-time night sequence of courses is shown on the next few pages. A worksheet for general education requirements is found on the last page. In most circumstances, completing your associates degree is encouraged and will satisfy the general education requirements. This page will explain exactly what you need to ensure your general education requirements are satisfied. You can also go to for further advising information. If you are just starting out, contact your local Community College (for Craven Community College, call ) and enroll in the Associate of Science or Pre-Engineering program of study. If you are at Craven Community College, contact Dr. Fortney the semester you are in Calculus-II and he will help you sign up for the sophomore NC State engineering courses that you will take while still a CCC student. If you are ready to transfer or will be ready at the end of the current academic year, follow transfer instructions found at The early application deadline is typically October, so please check exact dates early (http://admissions.ncsu.edu/apply/dates-and-deadlines/ ). Most students transfer (into the MES program or another Raleigh based program) the semester after they complete differential equations. For some majors like Electrical/Computer engineering, students should talk with the NC State advisor about transferring earlier. WHERE CAN I GET HELP? If you have questions or just want to talk to someone about the program, contact Dr. Fortney at

PROFICIENCY MET BY Humanities, Social Sciences, Visual & Performing Arts, and Interdisciplinary Perspectives Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA): If a student graduates with an associate in arts or associate in science degree from a NC Community College without transferring in more than 14 hours from another institution, the requirements below will be considered met. Students are advised to take PHI 240 and ECO 251 as part of their AA/AS degree to ensure all College of Engineering departmental requirements are met. A student transferring more than 14 hours to the community college or not completing the AA/AS degree will need a total of seven courses from the appropriate GEP categories listed below before they graduate from NC State. These courses may be taken in any order, but all courses must be completed for a letter grade.
