3 Pre- Kindergarten Our Preschool students have made scientific observations of our classroom butterflies We have experienced 3 out of 4 stages of the life cycle of butterflies; we received them as larva, and then watched them grow into big, fat, hungry, colorful caterpillars Then we watched the caterpillar s molt (lose its old skin) as it turned into a pupa (chrysalis). Finally, we watched how they emerged from their chrysalises into beautiful butterflies We will release them this week into our beautiful nature garden in the front of the school We will wrap up the year discussing what next year brings for these wonderful Preschoolers; ensuring that they make a smooth transition into Kindergarten. Kindergarten As we look at our classrooms today, we see them filled with independent readers, writers, and problem solvers. Every year we are amazed at the growth attained over these few short months we call Kindergarten. Your children enter our classrooms in September as fledglings but leave in June as contributing members of a learning community. Thank you for entrusting us with your most precious gift. It is our hope that you and your child enjoyed this journey as much as we have We look forward to celebrating the year with you at our Kindergarten Celebration on Tuesday, June 20th at 9:00am in our gymnasium. 1st grade First grade is buzzing with excitement We have finished up our unit on insects and released all beetles and butterflies to the EPE gardens. We are entering the last few weeks of school with a unit on mapping. We will learn how to read a map, use a compass, and identify symbols on a legend, or key. In math, we have been working with money, making exchanges and talking about coin equivalencies. In addition, we moved onto making and defining 2D and 3D shapes by their different attributes. In literacy, all students have been reassessed and given their end- of- the- year reading level. We will continue to work with small groups in guided reading and review skills taught throughout the year to prepare the kiddos for 2nd grade. Lastly, we hope you can join us for our Poetry Slam on June 7th at 10:30 am. Students will be sharing their poems and celebrating their writing growth with their families and friends. We are so proud of progress they made this year 2nd grade Second Grade can't believe it's June already In Social Studies, we wrapped up our unit on landforms by studying the book The Lorax and thinking about how people have an effect on the landforms they live near. We will end the year with a unit on space in which the children will be able to research a planet of their choice In Literacy we have been having some fun with idioms, similes, and metaphors. We are also reviewing skills we have learned throughout the year including character traits, summarizing, main idea, author s purpose, inferring, and point of view. We will also be studying Poetry in our last month and writing our own poems during Writer s Workshop. In Math, Second Grade will be focusing on measurements by estimating and by using standard units. Of course, we will be enjoying our ABC countdown each day of June as well, along with other special end of the year activities. What a fun year it has been 3rd grade Wow This school year seems like it has flown by. In third grade we will be finishing up our Water Unit in Science and our study of Chicago in Social Studies. The Tale of Despereaux, our final Kate DiCamillo novel, will be ending soon as well. We have had a great year in third grade and have learned so many new skills and have made tons of growth. Remember to follow along with the ABC Countdown as we try to make the end of the year, the most memorable one yet. Happy Summer to all 4th grade This month, we are moving through our read aloud, Seedfolks, and analyzing the text to identify the theme. The children are citing evidence to support their ideas and will be drafting a literary essay to show their work. In science, we have begun our unit, Chemical Testing. Although we won't be able to finish the unit before the year's end, the children will be conducting various tests to determine the identities of mystery chemicals (all of which are commonly found in homes). For math, we will wrap up the year with two short units on representing and interpreting data on line plots, and then understanding and comparing decimals. In social studies we will be wrapping up the Southwest region and finish the year with our last region, the West. Edison Park Elementary 3

4 5th grade We made it It is the last month of the school year We still have a lot to do before the year is finished. We just began our new unit in reading about theme and will begin to read our new class novel, Number the Stars. We are finishing up with our writing unit on expository writing. You should ask your fifth grader what the great spots in Chicago are to go to and explore Our next unit in writing will be poetry and we cannot wait to see what poems the students create Math has been a lot of fun learning about volume...it is a little bit easier than dividing with decimals. We are continuing to practice skills needed for our NWEA MAP test coming up In science, we re continuing to explore levers and their different classes- - your student will be seeing levers everywhere they look In social studies, we will be finishing the year learning about Westward Expansion in the United States. We will be exploring the trail pioneers took on the journey out west and we will learn about the hardships they endured while creating a new life for themselves, as well as the successes of their trip. We will learn about the Oregon Trail, the Louisiana Purchase, the California Gold Rush, as well as much more We can t wait to continue our ABC countdown together and do fun things to finish our year in 5th grade. Middle School Middle School English Language Arts 6th and 7th graders will be finishing up their final novel of the year. They will be reflecting on the character's experiences through the novel. The students will create their final extended response that is aligned to the essential questions of the unit. 8th graders just finished reading The Diary of a Young Girl. They are currently completing their final writing assignment here at Edison Park as they are getting ready for their graduation. Middle School Mathematics Congratulations on the end to another math year at Edison Park. We hope that as the summer begins, students will take an opportunity to reflect on their math practices and make goals for the new school year. We encourage students to seek out opportunities to keep up with their problem solving skills and skill practice. Real life situations such as calculating tips or percentage off at a store, or calculating mileage and hours for a road trip, provide great opportunities for math practice. Students are also encouraged to continue using IXL and to find websites, such as Khan Academy, for help with skill practice. Middle School Social Studies 6th: Sixth Grade has finished Ancient Greece and will be ending the year with Ancient Rome 7th: Seventh Grade has successfully completed the Constitution Before school ends, we will have one more visit from Lawyers in the Classroom and cover the war of 1812 and Westward Expansion 8th: Eighth Grade will be finishing our studies on World War II and the Holocaust in June Thank you, everyone, for a great year Middle School Science I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather we have been having Summer break is just around the corner 6th Grade: The students will continue learning about weather and climate. The students have a few more lessons. They will then take a unit assessment. Following the weather and climate unit, students will explore the topic of astronomy. Astronomy will be the last topic covered this school year 7th Grade: The students are continuing their unit on ecology. The students have learned about different kingdoms and ways to classify an organism. Recently, the students have been focusing on ecosystems and an organisms' food web. The students have been rocking it I am very proud of the 7th graders and how much they have grown in science this year. 8th Grade: The students are continuing with their unit on energy. The students will work through this unit until the end of the school year. The students have shown tremendous growth in science this year. I am very proud of each and everyone of them *Please make sure your child is keeping up with his or her studies even though it is so nice out I don't want to see any grades slip Have a safe and enjoyable summer break. Some of the stations involve getting wet; please make sure that your student wears clothing that is okay to get a little wet. Please also have them wear gym shoes and dress for the weather. You might want to have your children wear hats and bring sunscreen. 3) Students should bring a water bottle to carry around with them in case they get thirsty. Wednesday, June 7th 2:45-3:45 ALERT: Severe Nut Allergies Please Help Keep Our Kiddos Safe We are kindly asking our families to help us keep all of our students safe. This year we have students who are severely allergic to nuts. Any exposure to peanuts/nuts may cause a life- threatening allergic reaction that requires emergency medical treatment. To reduce the chance of this occurring, we are asking that you please do not send any peanut or nut containing products to school with your child that will be eaten in the school. If your child has eaten peanuts/nuts before coming to school, please be sure your child s hands and face have been thoroughly washed before entering the school. We truly appreciate all of your assistance in helping keep our EPE family members happy and safe. Social Media Please continue to check our website, Facebook, and Twitter throughout the month of June for important updates.
