4 02 MediacityCologne Media location Cologne - the number one Many reasons for success Loveable metropolis, inspiring location, home of established industry leaders and promising start-ups: Cologne is always on the move - and is Germany s most important media city. As diverse as the city s skyline the media metropolis Cologne Successful in all areas Cologne-based companies assert themselves in all relevant areas of the media industry - and regard change as an opportunity. Westdeutsche Rundfunk (WDR), continental Europe s largest public service broadcaster, and the companies of the Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, have deep roots in Cologne. Cologne s TV producers have long since adapted to the changing viewing patterns of TV viewers - with a wide range of special interest channels, video-on-demand platforms and offers for smart TVs, mobile devices and social networks. Cologne is also home to some of Germany s biggest YouTube stars - and to companies that creatively and innovatively supply the online channels. The three most successful TV production companies in 2013 all come from Cologne, more than half of the top 20 are represented with their head office or a branch in the media city on the Rhine. The range of formats produced in Cologne go from successful entertainment programs such as»ich bin ein Star - Holt mich hier raus!«via international ratings leaders like»alarm für Cobra 11«to award-winning documentaries and television films. The media city on the Rhine is also responsible for great cinema films. Whether such blockbusters as»der Medicus«,»Rush«and»Stromberg - Der Film«or international art-house hits like Jim Jarmusch s»only Lovers Left Alive«and Lars von Trier s»nymphomaniac«, Cologne is one of the most important production and shooting locations and the venue for glamorous premieres. Big players like Turtle Entertainment and Electronic Arts, exciting start-ups and gamescom - with a new attendance record in make Cologne the German games capital. In the ICT sector too, Cologne takes a leading position in Germany. The diverse mix of telecommunication companies, cloud specialists, software developers and e-commerce specialists include
5 Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston in»only Lovers Left Alive«MediacityCologne numerous market leaders - also at international level. The Web de Cologne industry network represents the interests of the Internet business and contributes to the strength of the location. Cologne is home to many important publishers, including TASCHEN, the world leader in coffee-table book sector. The German industry leaders include Mediengruppe M. DuMont Schauberg and Bastei Lübbe - with numerous activities beyond the printed word. Always to be found high in the rankings are Cologne s communication agencies, many of them owner-managed. With Ströer, a heavyweight in outdoor advertising - with expansion into the Internet and the games sector - is based in Cologne. Ideal conditions for start-ups In the wake of the established companies - supported by the City of Cologne, the Cologne Chamber of Commerce and Industry (the CCI Cologne) and many private initiatives, including attractive co-working spaces - exciting start-ups repeatedly grow up, bringing a breath of fresh air to the media metropolis of Cologne and trying something new: that too is a precondition for a dynamic development of the location. Ideal conditions for shooting The course was set early in Cologne to provide the players in the media industry with optimal working conditions - in the worldrenowned MMC Studios as well as on the streets and in the houses of the city. Around 1,000 permissions to shoot film are granted by the city each year. Cologne produces one-third of the German televi sion programme - and material for the world s cinemas. Ideal conditions for inspiration Cologne is inspiring. Cologne s pop scene with its record labels, award-winning clubs, concerts and the c/o pop, a combination of festival and important industry meeting place, attract international attention. The Schauspiel Köln enjoys an excellent reputation as does the Kölner Philharmonie and the Oper Köln. The fact that there is something exciting to discover every evening, has many other reasons. Cologne has a very lively independent theatre scene, is a centre for old and new music and also has something to offer lovers of literature - for example, Germany s largest international literary festival, the lit.cologne. Also institutions like the Museum Ludwig, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum and the newly created Akademie der Künste der Welt attract people from everywhere - not least those on whose input the media industry thrives. Ideal conditions for education Anyone who wants to be successful in the long term, needs both experienced staff and young talent with fresh ideas. In Cologne there are lots of them - thanks to numerous activities of the the CCI Cologne and the City of Cologne, thanks to well-known educational and training institutions such as the Kunsthochschule für Medien, the internationale filmschule Köln, the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the University of Cologne, funded by the Excellency Initiative of the federal and state governments. Both nationally and internationally, the media metropolis of Cologne enjoys an excellent reputation. This is due to its unique feature of diversity. Nowhere else do new developments find such a broad interdisciplinary platform, nowhere else is the industry so open and so curious about the challenges, nowhere else is the media business so creative and diverse as it is in Cologne. Dr. Ulrich S. Soénius, Managing Director Location Policy, Cologne Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ideal conditions for meetings Koelnmesse has over 600 employees in 80 countries around the world. Cologne is the world s leading trade fair location for 25 business sectors. 60 percent of exhibitors meanwhile come from abroad more than anywhere else. Not least for that reason, the location of Cologne is an excellent basis for the international exchange of information, goods and culture. Also as the home of important media organizations and institutions - including the office of the Ernst Schneider Prize of the CCI Cologne, the most important prize for business journalism, as the venue of acclaimed trade events and as the platform for the presentation of renowned awards, Cologne brings people together who have something to say (to each other). And where people exchange ideas, there is no lack of creativity, innovation - and success. Ideal conditions for networking Where so many companies in the media industry are to be found as in Cologne, conditions are ideal for synergy effects. Further points of contact and cooperation opportunities arise from the fact that, as a successful trade and business centre for diverse sectors, the city is a very interesting location. The CCI Cologne, the City of Cologne and private initiatives efficiently contribute to successful networking.

Funkhaus Europa is the international and multicultural program of WDR and Radio Bremen, which is produced in collaboration with Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. For children, with KiRaKa, WDR has founded its own digital radio station. After Radio Bremen and Saarländische Rundfunk, in 2014 a further partner was added with Bayerische Rundfunk, which will take part with contributions to this offer. In the summer of 2013, the broadcaster opened the»wdr Studio Zwei Die Medienwerkstatt«, in which school children can produce radio and television programmes. Classic Radio, modern technology Not only thematically, in the choice of the distribution channels, the Cologne-based broadcasters demonstrate diversity. From VHF and web radio via podcasts right through to the digital reception variants DAB and DVB-S, they make creative use of all the possibilities offered by today s technology. The WDR, for example, in recent years has developed numerous additional services, including more than 30 radio streams on the Internet. With its new»wdr 3 Konzertplayer«, WDR 3 offers music lovers the opportunity to listen at any time to complete concerts from the cultural channel s rich store. With such offerings as well as podcasts and on-demand broadcast recordings the stations take account of changed listening habits and provide their target groups independent of the broadcast date with content around the clock. The Hörspielforum NRW is an annual working conference in Cologne for radio drama writers, radio drama producers and professional groups with close links to radio drama. Cologne is not everything for 1LIVE, but everything is in Cologne. Authors, presenters, comedians, rock and movie stars. For editors who are thinking about a job at 1LIVE, Cologne is a strong argument apart from the rents. From the perspective of young creatives, Cologne and Berlin provide keen competition for the number one as a media location in Germany. Cologne has a good chance to assert itself if the city remains open to the digital transformation. 16 14 MediacityCologne The media future is shaped in Cologne Media convergence à la Cologne The times when publishers earned their money solely with printed materials, television stations only screened their programmes at set times on the screens of television sets and at best, all you could do with a mobile phone was make calls, are long gone. Convergence the combining of the functions of different devices right through to their merging offers completely new ways to distribute and market content. Multi-talent mobile phone On mobile terminals now you can read what previously was bought at the newsstand or in a bookshop, you can hear what once required a radio or hi-fi system as well as a visit to a record store, watch television or what was exclusively produced for the Internet. Ideally, there is also networking with relevant websites and actions in the social networks. All this creates added value both for the user and for those who earn their living producing content. The development of the mobile phone into a mobile multifunctional device is just one example of how fast convergence has advanced in just a few years. Not only this development indicates how quickly convergence is progressing. Connected TV and also the development of the car to become a mobile terminal are two further examples which illustrate the potential. Media companies which deal in content, must be prepared and see the changes as an opportunity to assert themselves on the market. Convergence is put into practice in Cologne Cologne is a good location for it, because in the media metropolis on the Rhine convergence is put into practice. There are good reasons for that. In Cologne, leading companies in all areas of the media are represented with their headquarters or branches. Synergy effects are thus inevitable, both in content development and in technical realization. On the diverse education market, which is a major plus for the location of Cologne, the demands of a convergent media world has long been taken into consideration. And then there are also the companies themselves, which mutually inspire each other in terms of innovation, technical expertise and creativity. Bastei Lübbe, for instance, is transforming itself into a multimedia company, the Mediengruppe M. DuMont Schauberg produces acclaimed ipad editions as well as news pages and invests money in the establishment and development of digital business models. RTL accompanies its programme with very successful activities in the social networks and quickly made a name for itself as a provider of gaming sites. The Cologne-based television companies also make use of the exciting opportunities that arise from the connection of TV sets to the Internet (Connected TV) WDR with a mediathek, the stations in the Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, among others, with self-produced channels. The film industry concerns itself with video-on-demand, the radio stations have adjusted, for example, with podcasts, to the fact that people want to hear certain programmes when it is convenient for them and not when set by the programme timetable. Communication agencies provide material for the field of traditional advertising as well as the platforms of the Internet and the mobile world. Convergence present everywhere Convergence and its consequences are also reflected in the many prestigious events highlights with which Cologne scores points throughout the year, such as in the Medienforum NRW and the c/o pop Convention programmes which in 2014 focuses on the themes»content, Production and Sales«. A further good example of the energy with which the theme of»convergence«is being promoted in Cologne is the UFA Lab NRW, which sees itself as a content laboratory for digital media and gives interdisciplinary teams the opportunity to work on trans-media moving image concepts with media-overlapping storytelling. In other words: anyone who wants to tell stories on film, should no longer only think about TV or cinema, but also the Internet, mobile devices. apps and games. Convergence is present everywhere and is continuing to accelerate. Cologne and its companies are well-prepared and work on tomorrow s media world.
