Office: 254 Dauer Hall Course Description Offers a close reading of Tolstoy s epic novel, War and Peace. Examines the literary and historical origins of the novel, its reflection of Tolstoy's obsession with history, and the emerging picture it presents of Russian identity. Taught in English. Further Details From the battlefield to the ballroom, Tolstoy's epic novel of life in Russia at the beginning of the nineteenth century is a profound meditation on the causes of war, the nature of social relationships, the poles of human suffering and love, and, perhaps most importantly, the nature and meaning of history itself. In this course we will read War and Peace closely in its entirety. We will examine the origins of the novel in Tolstoy's early writing and consider the historical, political, and social contexts, both of the events described (the Napoleonic Wars) and the period fifty years later in which Tolstoy wrote War and Peace. We will address some of the following questions: Is War and Peace a novel? How does Tolstoy's obsession with the theme of history shape the text on a variety of levels? What do various adaptations of the novel tell us about its reception at different historical moments? Finally, how might War and Peace be relevant to our own moment in history? Course Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes By the conclusion of the course it is expected that students will: Be familiar with early nineteenth-century Russian history and specifically Russia s role in the Napoleonic Wars; as well as Russian history of the mid-nineteenth century, e.g. the Crimean War and Emancipation; Be familiar with Leo Tolstoy s biography and the major personal and historical events that shaped his writing; Be familiar with the critical questions that shaped Russian national identity and society in the nineteenth century and with the legacy of these concerns in Russian culture today; Be able to assess critically the formal/literary and generic aspects of War and Peace; Be equipped to assess critically Tolstoy s philosophies of history and causality as articulated in War and Peace; Demonstrate their ability to assess critically the theoretical and literary aspects of War and Peace and other works by Tolstoy in the form of five response papers, two formal papers, and an oral presentation. 4 Course Requirements Attendance (10%): Attendance is mandatory and counts for 10% of your final grade. Attendance will be assessed by class roll at the beginning of class. Students are permitted one unexcused absence beyond which each additional unexcused absence will result in a lowering of the final grade by 1%. Absences will be excused only in accordance with UF policy. Acceptable excuses include illness, religious holidays, military obligation, & 12-day rule: *Note: to receive full credit for attendance, students must arrive to class on time, turn their cell phones to vibrate, and refrain from all texting and on-line activity during the class period. Make-up Policy: Should you miss a class for any reason, you are responsible for informing yourself as to what was covered in class. Except in the case of a certified illness or other UF-accepted excuse, there will be no make-up option for missed or late assignments. Where possible, make-ups should be arranged prior to the expected absence. In case of illness, student should contact me as soon as possible. Participation (15%): Equally crucial is your participation in all in-class activities and discussion. Your ability to participate meaningfully in our discussions depends on your preparation of the homework assignments. At the beginning of each class, your familiarity with the materials will be tested by a series of basic questions relating to the content of the assigned readings. If you prove unable to answer these questions, I will assume that you have not prepared the homework and will dock you 1% of the homework preparation grade. You will lose 1% on each occasion that you prove unable to answer these basic questions. The participation grade also depends on your contribution to in-class discussion and it is expected that each student make at least 1 substantive and well-informed contribution per class meeting. A well-informed contribution reflects knowledge of the primary texts as well as a familiarity with the relevant historical context and any assigned secondary readings. An A in participation will be earned by students who prove able to answer the basic questions that open our class and who consistently make well-informed contributions to our class discussion (at least 1 per class meeting). Group Presentation (10%). You will be expected to participate in one 15-minute group presentation (2-3 people) on a topic relevant to the course. These presentations are designed to provide additional historical and cultural context to the material we are reading. Topics and signup sheet will be provided in the first two weeks of class. Five Response Papers (15%). Response papers (5 x 3%) are due at scheduled intervals during the course of the semester. They should be 1-2 pages in length (12 pt; double-spaced; 1 inch margins). Those related to War and Peace will require you to trace a particular theme over the course of the book; the material you develop in these response papers will form the core of your final paper. You will be expected to share response papers in class. War and Peace Cartoon (5%). You will also be asked to complete a brief cartoon version of War and Peace at the end of the semester in which you summarize what, in your view, are the most important elements of the book. Mid-Term Essay (20%). This paper should be 4-5 pages in length (12 pt; double-spaced; 1 inch margins). Topics will be provided, but you are also free to write about a topic of your own choosing with prior instructor approval. Due Feb.19 in class and via turnitin.com by 10:40am. 2

5 Final Paper (25%). This paper should be 5-7 pages in length (12 pt; double-spaced; 1 inch margins). You will be expected to develop the theme you have identified in your response papers into the topic of your final essay. It is due April 20 in class and via turnitin.com by 10:40am. We will workshop your final papers in class on April 15 and writing consultations will be provided on April 18 (in addition to normal office hours).
